I am DMing a family only group with my husband and 6 year old - we started out with Mines of Phandelvar. I own Dragon of Icespire Peak and Sleeping Dragon's Wake. Since MoP will take us into the 4-5 range, can Icespire be run starting at this higher level? This is basically my first time DMing (my husband runs our 2 adult campaigns) - any suggestions on how to make this work?
To answer your question it certainly can. Most of the adventures will be for lower then 5th level, but given that your playing with your 6 year old, I would just let him crush the encounter. If you need to make it tougher add a bad guy or two extra.
I dm for my family as well for my 5 year old to my 14 year. I have figured one thing out about my 5 year old boy, he loves, as he is so fond of telling me, to be a killing machine. He loves rolling dice and me saying it dies. By contrast my 7 year old daughter loves the role play, and zones out during combat.
Some very valid points, my friend - thank you! Do you have any suggestions on how to coax him into the RP aspect? Even though it's only family for the moment, he still comes off as very shy.
I do voices. My campign is based in Phandalin as well, just doing my own plot. So Torben, owbwe of the Stonehill, is a jolly loud man who greats them by name, and asks them how slept, and what they like for breakfast out of two choices, "morning Minty, my daughter's druid is named Minty, you want fresh eggs I got from the Sunderstone farm this morning, or fresh cooked ham from the Greenleaf farmstead?"
The funnier, louder, or gruffer the voice the more my kids react to it, and respond.
I lead all the talking and give them choices, then praise the choice.
