My group has just completed the mountain climbing quest from Targos, and right before we finished our session they rolled back into town late at night and told me they wanted to try to get an audience with the towns speaker in The Caer. As written in the adventure, the first time they had tried to talk to the speaker they were turned away, but since then they have discovered the duerger in the building nearby, and cleared them out.
I know once they have proven to be useful allies against the Duergar, the Black Swords change their tune and will welcome the adventurers into the Caer, attempting to try and strike up an alliance of sorts. What I'm not sure about is exactly how much are they willing to share about themselves. Are they open about being cultists who worship a devil, or do they keep up the ruse that they are working with the town speaker? Do they allow the players to see the speaker, or does Kadroth try to pass himself off as being in charge?
Interested in how other DM's have played this. My group is a little on the chaotic netural side of things, so I genuinely have no idea how they'll react if they find out the whole Caer is taken over by devil worshipers.
In my game, the party haven't met the speaker. The party had the speaker in Caer Konig (I think), write a letter to each of the other speakers after the party completed the Caer Konig quest.
When the party first turned up at the Caer, the guards didn't let them in but took the letter.
When the party returned to the Caer in the morning, they were invited in (since Kadroth had read the letter).
The party weren't particularly interested in the speaker. Since the PCs have all been in Ten Towns for a few years they knew that the Speaker was a bit of a bully. The PCs therefore didn't care that the speaker was probably being kept hostage since the new occupiers of the Caer hadn't proven themselves to be any worse than the Speaker.
The party aren't aware of the truth behind the occupiers of the Caer, but I think they might know it is a cult of some kind.
Kadroth expressed interest in helping to deal with the Duergar threat, and my party are happy to work with them, especially since they've been given one of the corner towers in which they can stay.
Since the cult is devil worshippers it doesn't mean that all the members are extremely evil in their actions. They know why they joined the cult, and the cult isn't opposed to the Ten Towns in any way.

This was helpful, thanks!
I think I’ll go with the cultists acting enigmatic and coy about their complete agenda, and maintaining that the speaker is too sick for an audience.
The weirdness of the place, and any questioning of the two young servants there should be enough to clue the players in to something being amiss.
