Competition of the Finest Brews: The Tavernkeeper's Random Table

"You start in a tavern" - this line is iconic and describes to a surprising degree the nature of D&D in just a single abstract line.

However, what does it refer to? What do you meet in the tavern? Is the innkeeper a gruff ex-adventurer who's retired, or a black-hearted mage that is more interested in seeing people get pummeled in the secret pit matches the tavern holds one a week? Are the patrons respectable and wealthy, or rough and messy? Does the tavern have any quirks, like a "Special Drink" or the fact that it's built into a scrapped ship? And, of course, what on earth is the tavern actually called?

This series of random roll tables are here to inspire, add depth to, and make taverns worthy of player notice. This table can also be repurposed in parts to help customize stores and other gatherings of people, where sometimes things can get a bit random.

Tavern Names

The first - and sometimes, most important - part of making a tavern or inn is getting a good name for it. No-one wants to drink at the "Baby's Big Bottom Bar", and names like the "Creaky Duck" can add a character to an inn. When making a tavern, you may roll on or choose an option from the tables below.

Roll for each part of the name separately. If you roll for a Secondary Name, you don't have to roll for a description, and vice-versa. You may need to roll multiple times on this table.

In addition, certain types of tavern have certain types of names. You're not going to find an inn called "Rusty Pete's Head" in the wealthy district of town, and you're most likely going to find pirates and sailors in "Cut-throat Dragon's Bay". Find a name that suits your tavern! The table is simply suggestions.

Tavern Quirks

All taverns need a good quirk to make them stand out from the crowd. When making a tavern, you may roll on or choose an option from the table below.

2	The tavern has two floors, but the second one almost always is filled by a gang of bullies led by a fierce duergar who drinks herself to sleep
3	The tavern is built over a small pond, and it's supported by massive stilts
4	The tavern hosts weekly illegal pit-fights that attract the ire of the local guard but pay good coin
5	The tavern always smells of strange spices that no-one can place
6	The tavern is designed to be friendly to people in wheelchairs, and is frequented by a disabled noble
7	The tavern is built from the wood of a scrapped ship. Barnacles still cling to the outside walls
8	The tavern is haunted by a non-hostile specter whom the proprietor has dubbed "Percival"
9	The tavern is covered in plants and fungus on the outside, but is pristine on the inside
10	The tavern contains a set of stairs that appear to lead nowhere.
11	The tavern is officially closed, but volunteers have continued to secretly run the place
12	A large Dragonborn head is mounted to the wall of the tavern
13	The tavern's fireplace burns blue, green, yellow, pink, or purple, but not red.
14	The tavern is occasionally frequented by strange men in dark cloaks
15	A massive tree dominates the center of the tavern, even sprouting out of the tavern's roof
16	The tavern's entrance sign swings, regardless of whether there is a breeze or not
17	The tavern's "Special Meal" is in fact crushed frog's eggs, flour, diced meat of unknown origin, and ale cooked over half-dead fire embers
18	A displacer beast not only serves as the tavern's mascot, but the proprietor's personal pet too
19	The tavern always seems to be full when you need to book rooms
20	The proprietor is secretly a lycanthrope, but they hide their affliction from others

This random roll table does double duty, acting as both a random roll table for customers and tavern keepers. When relevant, you may roll on or choose an option from the table below. You may need to roll multiple times on this table. If you wish to forgo rolling as much as possibly but still must use the table, use the commoner stat block and only roll for Personality and First Names.

 How's that for a random roll table?  I should have more options later maybe.  I also have not included random genders for proprietors and customers as the spectrum is so diverse I wouldn't know where to start.

 Do tell me if anyone ever uses this, it was a blast to make and if it's fun enough I could even make an alternative version for something else (such as villain goons, supporters, mobs, etc.)
