I need a bit of advice about the cosmology of the multiverse in 5E. I'm working on a sub setting that blends a few ideas together and I'd like it to tie in with official background material. It's a shared setting with two other GMs, so it has to go along with the canon of D&D's cosmology.
The premise is that an advanced Yuan Ti controlled society, using magical technology, tunneled through the elemental planes as a means of getting magical power. But they pushed too far, as far as the void/negative plane and caused a backlash that destroyed a sizable area of their empire.
At the heart of this region is a rift into the negative plane and as a result of stripping through all the elemental planes (including regions of the ethereal, shadowfell and feywild), the catastrophe created an area that has a little of it all. There's several 'factions' active in the area and at least one will be trying to widen the rift further so that the void consumes everything.
One key issue is Sigil. Could this area be a threat to Sigil? If the negative plane was somehow able to consume the prime material entirely and maybe keep going is that bad news for Sigil? I'm not too clear on whether Sigil is tied to all the other planar layers or exists in its own seperate adjoining space. Obviously if this region was a threat they would try and do something about it. Likewise if the Far Realm was able to reach through the rift would that also be bad news for Sigil?
One faction I wanted to be active in this region were Sigil 'adventurers'. I wanted some 'rogue' groups here to loot and also an 'official' group policing contraband and trying to keep a lid on everything (a bit like 'Duty' in the PC game STALKER). (How big a threat this region actually is to Sigil will have some bearing on how official and sanctioned this group is.)
If the prime is consumed this is probably bad news for the Outer Planes too. Gods with no worshippers are quickly going to lose all power and form, eventually dissipating into ethereal dream stuff. Even the most evil and chaotic of the gods from the depths of the abyss want worshippers and require there to be 'something' however dark and depraved it is. Absolute nothingness has to be bad news even for them. (I could be way off on how all that works. I really like Terry Pratchett's 'Small Gods' angle on how gods become and stay gods.) But this region is hard for them to access with no worshippers and possibly one god in particular having some control here.
In a sense this is a sort of pocket realm, like Strahd's domain. But with a presence on prime due to the rift. Like other pocket realms it is controlled to a degree by a powerful entity. In this case the sleeping and sated Yuan Ti god/gods. It's possible the Far Realm has some influence here too. Maybe even acting through Dendar, the dreaming aspect of the Yuan Ti pantheon. I believe it has been speculated before that the Yuan Ti gods could be a front for something from the Far Realm.
So if anyone can help me with the cosmology so its fairly watertight that'd be a big help. Any suggestions for cool ideas to toss into the stew would be great too.
