So I was thinking about the Light cantrip today. Would you be able to experiment with the light cantrip and various types of glass to have the spell create light that can only be seen through goggles made with that glass combination, creating night vision goggles. You could then equip your party with those goggles and you could then always have a light source that only benefits your party.
What do you think? How long would it reasonably take to make such a discovery and the subsequent goggles? How mush would it cost?
Spells only do what they state in their description, so I don't think you could use the Light spell to make a brand new type of light... There's certainly no way you can playing by RAW and RAI.
However-- each DM may choose to rule their own way, and some may make quests for you to do just this. This kind of homebrew ruling would be game to game.
To play in this sandbox: I imagine that the goggles would need to be custom made. I think you'd need someone who had learned this new Light discovery and could use glassblowers tools to properly make the lens, and you'd need special supplies. There'd be some kind of ingredient needed, maybe the eye of a creature with Truesight. And perhaps the light is visible to those with Truesight.
Literally, the item already exists (just not in the way you know it) so just go giving your party a pair or two. Two reasons they are good:
They don't require attunement.
They are uncommon.
This allows for humans (and other races that lack darkvision) early on to look nerdy, but see in the dark. Just hand a pair out when you have a party with that one character who can't see in the dark and it can really make a difference. They are a good low-level item that can easily be held onto for a while because they don't require attunement. Upgrade them if you like by having a magical artificer do so for a price and make them better as the party level up and can pay for it. You can make magic items however you want, but don't skimp on using what already exists.

I could see needing ingredients, maybe the lenses are created with melted down eyes of a creature with truesight mixed into the glass.

No, it doesn't exist, the reason I named the post TRUE night vision goggles is because I am not talking about the existing item. I am talking about an item that is used in conjunction with the Light cantrip to create light only visible to those with the goggles, or with truesight as recommended by MellieDM
I see what you mean. When in doubt Blindsight could work, but you could say that you can't see into Magical Darkness with this type of Blindsight unless you wanted to allow them to do so. If that is what you are thinking of I suggest just giving Blindsight goggles that work, but only through sight and not hearing. Just make an upgrade to the Googles of Night that already exist.

The goggles of night exist, as an option.
