This is a subclass designed to embody the retraining of promising candidates of a Paladin order who might be a little too independent-minded and undisciplined to take on an oath. Instead they make excellent scouts, able to range ahead of an armed force, or keep a watchful eye on dangers from a distance. In a pinch, they are able to use some of their Paladin training to support more typical ranger skills, and when combat falls their key role is marking the key targets for their comrades and using the information and intelligence they have gathered to coordinate attacks.
To put it bluntly, this subclass is really, REALLY boring. Basically all they get is little mechanical buffs that aren't fun. They only thing this subclass does is make you more powerful.
Also, the "paint the target" feature is weird. Firstly, it's VERY overpowered. If you have a monk in the party, at level 5, that one feature is adding 14 damage A TURN. If there's also a Fighter in the party, that's even more extra damage. Also, why does it have a use limitation so plentiful its unlimited? In what universe are you going to be running 4+ fights per short rest? One good thing about this feature is that it makes the Ranger capstone a little bit more exciting.
