I would like to create a subclass for the Bard. I plan to use the Bard from Rolemaster as a basis for this. I would like to use some of the spells from Rolemaster to create an additional spell list. However, I now have the problem that I don't know how best to convert the spell levels (1 - 50) from Rolemaster to those used in D&D 5e.
Try to figure out the corresponding power level of spells from both games. For example, a level 1 Rolemaster spell might be a cantrip, and a level 40 spell might be D&D level 7 or 8. I have no idea if that's at all accurate, but that method should work. Also, make sure you adhere to the 5e design principles. All spells with harmful effects require an attack or failed save, no save or die spells, etc.
Thanks for your explanation. And that's exactly where I'm having problems. I can't seem to convert the levels from Rolemaster to D&D in a way that makes sense. It's also often difficult because some spells in Rolemaster have effects that correspond to several similar spells in D&D, but with different levels.
Rolemaster was designed as a replacement magic system for D&D and later refined into an independent system. As such, you would normally use the spell development and power point development from RMC/RMSS/RMU with the Rolemaster spells. RM second edition had rules for mixing it with D&D (2e at the time), but I don't know if RM Classic retained it. I guess you would convert the spell progression to power point development, but spell progression would be harder, particularly with Base, Open, Closed, and other spell lists. (Prosaic being the best, IMO)
I suspect you want to convert specific spells to D&D, though? The first step would be to translate what the spell does into D&D language and then compare it to existing spells to determine the approximate spell level. Finally, refine it and add potential scaling for higher spell slots. Some spells may beyond what a D&D 9th level spell can do.
