I am new....well very new to dnd. I do collect books and cards for the game but never played it though I do have plans with college folks to play some DND and want to make a cool character which I don't know how to set up.
Thought I ask here since someone might be able to help me
Here is some ideas to help make it
Able to control dead, sprits, and shadows but also summon fey
Connections to Celtic themes, Seelie Court, or some gothic fairy theme
Can cast lots of spells since I like variety
Maybe themed Around a Mad Hatter with Wonderland trope's
Trickster theme, able to make fake gold, turn invisible or hide in shadows, or general tricks
Can skip shape shifting since dont care about it
If anyone can help that be great, can also use resources from Legend of Aventris "The Crooked Moon"
Also, depending on the ruleset you're playing, a Nature Domain Cleric (5e) could be a good fit, but I agree that an Archfey warlock would fit best to your description thematically. And for aspects such as "connection to Celtic themes" and "themed around Mad Hatter", it's fairly easy to build a backstory around this. You can make almost almost anything work with a sufficiently thought out backstory. Just talk to your DM and I'm sure they will be more than happy to craft the backstory with you that fits the campaign story and your description.

Play a Wizard. They can do basically everything except heal.
I would not recommend multiclassing if you're very new to the game. Get to know the rules with a simpler character first.
An Archfey Warlock or an Illusionist Wizard both seem like they could be good fits.
