So, I'm trying to figure out how to upcast a spell, and I'm not sure how to implement it.
So, do I just have to do one level that automatically tracks across the whole range of upcasts? Or do I have to include an individual one for every level? The button to access that kind of thing is "Add a Higher Level", and the table says "Level" at the first column, so I assume that's the case. I just wanna check in with the professionals before I go through with this.
If it's the same effect for each level (like adding a damage die every level) or at regular intervals (like adding a damage die every two levels) then you only need to add a single entry to that table. For this behavior, what you need to do is:
Check "At Higher Levels Scaling?" checkbox on the main page
Set "Higher Level Scaling Type" to "Spell Scale"
Add a single entry to the table with "Scaling Level Value" set to however many levels you need to increase to see a change (e.g., for a change every level, set this to 1; for a change every other level, set it to 2; and so on)
Fill out the rest of the fields for what the change actually is.
If you create your spell using Fireball as a template, you'll see how it's set up.
If the effect is different at different higher levels (like Hex, which changes the Duration by different amounts at different levels) then you need to add an entry to that table for each time that it changes. For this behavior, you do this:
Check "At Higher Levels Scaling?" checkbox on the main page
Set "Higher Level Scaling Type" to "Spell Level"
Add an entry to the table for each level where it's supposed to change, with "Scaling Level Value" set to the level it's supposed to change at
Fill out the rest of the fields for what the change actually is.
If you create your spell using Hex as a template, you'll see how it's set up.
The third option for "Higher Level Scaling Type" is for spells whose effects scale with the character level of the caster rather than the spell slot level. In official material, only cantrips work this way, though I think the homebrew system is fine with you setting this option on a leveled spell if you wanted to.

All right, I just tested it out on my homebrew spells. Works like a charm! Thanks!
No problem!
