No idea if I'm doing this right, (first ever post) but here it goes... Trying to not 'break' the power balance of the ability as it exists (or even amend as originally written), just open it up to be a bit more useable! I'd love to see something like this in a martials book with updates like Tasha's.
Level 1: Favored Enemy
You gain one of the following feature options of your choice. Whenever you gain a Ranger level, you can replace the role you chose with a different Favored Enemy role.
Role Spell
Striker Hunters Mark
Healer Healing Word
Controller Entangle (Your Favored Enemy castings are cast as a Bonus Action)
You always have your role’s spell prepared. You can cast it twice without expending a spell slot, and you regain all expended uses of this ability when you finish a Long Rest.
The number of times you can cast the spell without a spell slot increases when you reach certain Ranger levels, as shown in the Favored Enemy column of the Ranger Features table.
Level 13: Relentless Hunter
You gain the following benefit to your Favored Enemy feature:
Striker Taking damage can’t break your Concentration on Hunter’s Mark.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word can add your Proficiency Bonus to the total healing.
Controller Taking damage can’t break your Concentration on your Favored Enemy spell.
Level 17: Precise Hunter
You gain the following benefit to your Favored Enemy feature:
Striker You have Advantage on attack rolls against the creature currently marked by your Hunter’s Mark.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word also heal yourself for half the total healing rolled.
Controller Creatures within the area of effect of your Favored Enemy spell castings have disadvantage for their saving throw against that spell.
Level 20: Foe Slayer
You gain the following benefit to your Favored Enemy feature:
Striker The damage die of your Hunter’s Mark is a d10 rather than a d6.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word heals D6’s rather than D4’s.
Controller You can now choose to cast either Entangle or Spike Growth.
The only subclasses I can see that specifically need to change (up to Sep 2026/Arcana Unleashed release) is the Beast Master, Level 11 ability and the Hunter level 3 and 11 abilities as follows:
Beast Master
Level 3: Primal Companion (just added as a good change, nothing to do with the rest of this idea, lol)
When you cast or change targets of your Hunters Mark spell, you can also (as the same Bonus Action) command your Primal Companion beast to take the Beast’s Strike action.
Level 11: Bestial Fury
When you command your Primal Companion beast to take the Beast’s Strike action, the beast can use it twice.
In addition, based on your Ranger role, you gain the following benefit:
Striker The first time each turn it hits a creature under the effect of your Hunter’s Mark spell, the beast deals extra Force damage equal to the bonus damage of that spell.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word also heal your pet for half the total healing rolled.
Controller Your Favored Enemy spell castings do not affect your pet.
Hunter:
Level 3: Hunter’s Lore
You can call on the forces of nature to reveal certain strengths and weaknesses of your prey, based on your Ranger role, you gain the following benefit:
Striker While a creature is marked by your Hunter’s Mark, you know whether that creature has any Immunities, Resistances, or Vulnerabilities, and if the creature has any, you know what they are.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word range is doubled.
Controller With your Favored Enemy spell castings, whenever a creature fails its saving throw; you know whether that creature has any Immunities, Resistances, or Vulnerabilities, and if the creature has any, you know what they are.
Level 11: Superior Hunter’s Prey
Striker Once per turn when you deal damage to a creature marked by your Hunter’s Mark, you can also deal that spell’s extra damage to a different creature that you can see within 30 feet of the first creature.
Healer Your Favored Enemy castings of Healing Word can also damage a creature within 5 ft of your target for 1d6 force damage.
Controller Your Favored Enemy spell castings, can also deal 1d6 force damage to one target within its area of effect.
Winter Walker is built to be a striker subclass, using Hunters Mark is the subclasses meta, otherwise it needs a serious re-work if to fit in this new idea.
