Hey guys, so I thing I noticed while looking through Bard subclasses is that several kinda paralell martial classes: - Dance bard is like a monk - Whispers bard functions like a rogue - swords and Valor Bards kinda function like fighters.
yet no Bard is like a Barbarian. I wanted to change this with my own subclass! Feel free to offer any critique or reccomendations in the comments below!
College of Gladiators
Draw Attention Through Physical Might Bards of the College of Gladiators know that violence can be the greatest show. Learning from Barbarians, Arena Fighters, and Strongmen, these bards combine raw strength with showmanship, simultaneously becoming intense fighters, and dazzling stars.
Level 3: Showman’s Strength Your might has been physically enhanced by your force of personality. Each act of athleticism is a new opportunity to show off. Gain the following:
- Gladiator: You may add Charisma to Strength Checks and saves, utilizing force of personality to become stronger.
- Unarmed Defense: When not wearing armor or using a shield, your AC is 10 plus your Constitution and Charisma modifiers.
Level 3: Spotlight You gain the ability to spend a Bardic Inspiration Die as an action to enter the Spotlight. When in the Spotlight, you gain the following effects.
- Take the Blow: You gain Temporary HP equal to your Bardic Inspiration times your Proficiency Bonus.
- Performers Presence You gain advantage on strength checks and saving throws.
- Unstoppable Star You gain advantage on saves against being frightened or Charmed.
- Uhh I don’t know what to call this You cannot cast spells over Level 1, but you can still concentrate on spells.
- Grandstanding: As a Bonus action, you can boast. This causes you to be able to do the following:
o Enemies up to your Charisma modifier (Minimum of 1) make a wisdom save contested by your Performance check. On a fail, they have disadvantage on attacks rolls on Creatures other than you. On a success, they are immune to this ability until you spend another Bardic inspiration dice.
o You may spend a bardic inspiration die to heal yourself equal to what you rolled.
When you enter Spotlight, you can chose to Grandstand as part of the action.
Your Spotlight lasts until the end of your next turn, and it ends early if you don Heavy armor or have the Incapacitated condition. If your Spotlight is still active on your next turn, you can extend the Spotlight for another round by doing one of the following:
Make an attack roll against an enemy.
Make a performance or athletics check.
Or use your Grandstand Ability.
Each time your Spotlight is extended, it lasts until the end of your next turn. You can maintain a Spotlight for up to 1 minute.
Level 6: Extra Attack You can attack twice instead of once whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. In addition, while you’re in the spotlight, you can do the following:
As a reaction when another creature hits you with a melee attack, you can spend a Bardic Inspiration die to subtract an amount from the damage equal to 2 rolls of Bardic Inspiration. If you roll higher than the damage dealt, deal the leftover amount of damage back to the attacker as psychic damage.
Level 6: Battle Recovery:
Whenever you land a Critical hit on a Melee attack, regain one use of Bardic Inspiration.
If you’re in your Spotlight, you also regain it if you roll a 1 on a melee attack, with the power coming from your need for success in the face of danger.
Level 14:
Leading Evasion: Whenever you enter Spotlight, you gain the following:
- You gain resistance to Nonmagical Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.
- When a creature fails your Grandstand, you may move half your walking speed towards them and make one attack as a reaction. You can do this for one creature only.
- Once per long rest, when reduced to Zero HP while in Spotlight, spend Bardic inspiration die up to your proficiency bonus. You regain that much HP instead of falling to zero HP, and you may move half your movement speed.
