So i recently started Dming and had this idea for a very important item in my story that would give a player the magic initiate Feat and the player who just received it is allready really excited about the item.
but i am having trouble with adding the feat to the item and having the spell list appear on the sheet and all posts on the topic i could find were quite old and seemed to hint at some sort of update on the issue.
any help? maybe an alternate way to do this? i thought about just adding the spells he wanted to the item but it seemed a bit more messy
The easiest way to do this is to go into the character if you have DM/Edit permissions and manually add the Magic Initiate Feat for the Casting type the player wants and then have the player select the spells, or you could select them if they are a specific set. Then under the "Other Possessions" section list the item.
It sounds like this is not a item that other players will be able to use so I would suggest instead of making it a magic item the player holds when they activate/use the item for the first time it binds to their body, sinking into the skin and taking the form of a tattoo/mark/glyph/rune.
In case that doesn't work for you though I'll poke at the homebrew features when I get some downtime and let you know what I find.

Thanks i will give edit feature a whirl, that seems like a better way then the one i came up with.
the idea about the item binding to the holder is really cool and i might use that some other time ^^
but since the item is a magical notebook that keeps getting new info written in it by one of the bad guys it kind of want to keep it as a book.
