I like the idea of Arcane Focus items in D&D5E, but just using them to substitute a material components pouch seems a little lackluster.
Consider this; the term focus, to me, seems to suggest an intensification. As such, why not apply a +1 to your Spell Attack Bonus and your Spell Save DC should your spellcaster elect to use one? The catch, as written in the rules, (If I remember correctly ...) is that you can't cast spells without your Arcane Focus.
What do you think? Is it fair House Rule material?
Nothing in the 5e rules that I know of says that you need a focus to spellcast. If it did, you would be giving spellcasters a free +1 to spell attack rolls and saving throw DCs. There's also the issue of rangers (and others) not getting a spellcasting focus.

Right. I know that. You don't need an Arcane Focus. That's the point - SHOULD you elect to use one, you get the bonuses ... BUT lose or break the thing your SOL.
As for the other classes ... It's simply not a boon they would get. I mean, why should they?
Rangers, Eldritch Knight fighters, and Arcane Trickster rogues do not get to use a spellcasting focus. All other PHB spellcasters do, including paladins.

Okay ... I still don't see any problem here. It's still optional.
Unless min/max is your playing style, which is a problem for you, not my players.
Wait a minute, maybe I am not being clear ... arcane foci are completely optional to the PC, should they elect to use one, they get the bonuses. Not everyone in our group wants an arcane focus due to the downside of being unable to cast spells without it should they choose to utilize one.

That's what I was missing. Okay, that makes it a lot better.
