I am currently DMing a small game where I had the characters start with standard array/point buy system. We are following the standard rules pretty closely, but I wanted to add in the potential for more character building.
For example, if the PCs complete a monumental campaign mission or a personal story arc I am thinking about awarding them with “prestige points” (or something like that) that can be added up to buy a feat or extra skill, etc. I know there are some mechanics for this in the book, but it seems like it’ll take the characters an extremely long time in-game.
Because the party is small I want to give them a little more versatility/flexibility without making them OP. I would like to hear if anyone else had tried something similar and how it worked.

Haven't tried it, but my initial thought is to give them an epic boon based on the task they've completed.
