Hi! I'm working on a custom race for my campaign. One of its racial abilities currently grants it 1 extra HP per level whenever it receives healing, at the cost of -1 constitution. (IE if they drink a healing potion at level 2, besides the 2d4+2 from the potion, they gain an extra 2 HP). How would I go about adding this in as a modifier/other (If I should at all), and does this sound balanced? Thanks!
I don't know how to add the modifier but, I would suggest that the ability can be used whenever you use your hit dice to recover HPs. Limit the uses of applying the ability to other sources of HP recovery to your Con modifier per long rest. I think I read that people say it's easiest to design something like this as a feat.

Healing in combat is usually not great, because you'll use your turn to heal less damage than an average enemy of your level. This means that this ability really reads "you have less health, but it's really really to get you back up between fights", which doesn't seem very appealing to me. You're giving away more than you're getting back here. A level n, you would need to be healed n times in battle just to break even, and that's not considering you also take a hit on your Constitution saving throws.
As to how to do it, doesn't putting a -2 modifier in Constitution ? The +1 on healing should really just be test, left to the player to remember.
Yeah, using your turn for this would probably be a losing battle,.As a bonus to all heals "on all the time " ability, it would probably be to strong. Maybe using it with a bonus action or reaction would make more sense
Thanks for the ideas! I think I'll rework it to a reaction usable once per long rest, triggered upon gaining HP from any source. You gain (1 + Con (Min 1)) X Level HP. For example, a 6th level ranger with a con of 12 and 36 HP would gain 12 HP per use of this ability. I'm debating making it cost hit a hit die, although one is not rolled. Thoughts?
At level 20 with Con 20, you would get back 120 HP. Seems a bit much. I would suggest adding your level instead of multiplying by it. In a nutshell however, it would be more like a reskinned Second Wind from the Fighter's book of tricks. That being the case, maybe just give the race Second Wind or rename it.
