So I very much enjoy rolling to discover the ideals, bonds, flaws, the ally and rival, and non-guild contact to flesh out my PC.
My first roll for non-guild contact I scored the bit about a Orzhov spirit that thinks I stole something of theirs. For giggles I went to the Orzhov items and assigned them numbers, and rolled to see if perhaps I could make a great plot device by adding validity and depth to this character I’m fascinated with...
AND then BAM! I rolled the die and scored Rod of Rulership...
Well earlier I also happened to roll for an ally in the form of a Medusa in the Guildhall... and a rival in the form of a parent who is an elite assassin in the Ochran...
To make it even more interesting I started this character of mine using the Kraul player character guide from DM Guild... (slightly modified by neglecting Hive Instinct and Raised on the Rot Farm).
So basically I rolled up this kraul who is essentially an outsider and sure as hell going to be hunted by just about everyone and their brother unless he can offload this rare item he found exploring the vaults in Undercity. Which is great- but how the heck does he get rid of this thing? Surely this Orzhov spirit is going to track down this low level exile, likely try to kill him at some point, or worse contact Orzhov who involve other guilds and their agents to get their hands on the rare item.
If this were your character what would you do? Keep it and try to use it? Sell it? Try to make amends with the spirit chasing you? Give it to your contact in the guild?
So I been develop this character of mine a lot over the last night and stumbled into a story eerily similar to Cloud from FF7.
The campaign will almost exclusively take place in Undercity in Ravnica with the PCs slated at level 1. The majority of enemy encounters involving kraul will focus on other outsiders existing outside the hive structure and other similarly exiled creatures and forces coexisting in the drudges of a Ravnican existence at the literal bottom of society.
To solve the issue of CR I’ll just scale down the encounters of those enemies by bout 1/3 of their HP and attack, and -2 to their AC.
This PC is basically in a situation where the outsider kraul who are more so allied with Jarad the Golgari Guildmaster are committing hit and run actions to bring down Death Priest Mazirek and his hold on the hive. They are aware someone has found something in the vaults and are suspicious of anyone not committed to their goal.
Meanwhile this committed agent of the Golgari who sits low on the totem pole chain of command can’t just abandon this rare treasure, has been spied on by his father who is an elite assassin and a rival to his own son- desires steal the item and hand it over to Mazirek to destroy those kraul who oppose his rule and in so doing pave the way for a kraul backed takeover for Vraska to gain total control.
