Recently I've been working on this, and I like it's almost done but I would like some outside opinions on this subclass. As a whole, I do like this class, but here are some of my personal concerns:
the level 2 bonus is really strong simply because everything that it allows the player the pick up, but thought it was fine due to most of it being non-combat related, so was wondering if its fine or do I need to cut back on that tier.
I keep debating on switching the level 6 and level 10 tiers because I feel that they are both good enough to be level 10 abilities but If i were to move the level 6 to level 10 that would mean that the player would learn animate object 3 levels early, but only able to cast it once per long rest.
I would also like an opinion on the animate trinket feature because I do plan on publishing that spell as a homebrew spell since I personally didn't care for the options that are already there.
School of Tinkering
Level 2
Tinkering Savant: You learn the mending cantrip and it as an action. You gain proficiency with tinker tools and two other tools of your choice.
Animate trinket: Objects come to life at your command. The target of the spell animates, growing leg and arm-like appendages if it does not have any. You cannot animate an object larger than 8 inches on a side. As a bonus action, you can mentally command the trinket you animated with this spell if the creature is within 30 feet of you. The trinket can understand simple tasks, cannot attack, nor carry more than 10 pounds. Once an order is given the trinket will continue to follow it until the task is complete or until given a different command. You can only have one trinket animated at a time, and you can dismiss the spell as an action. If you animate more than one trinket at a time, the trinket that has that was previous animate loses its animation.
Level 6
Researcher’s Epiphany: Once per short rest, you can cast a spell that you do not have prepared that you have in your spell and have the spell slot for.
Level 10
Tinker's Animation: You add the Animate Objects spell to your spell book if it is not there already. Once per long rest, you can cast Animate Objects without expending a spell slot.
Level 14
Master Craftsmanship: Constructs that you summon or create gain a bonus +1 to their AC and gain temporary hit points equal to your wizard level.
You may want to hold off on this and wait for the final iteration of the Artificer class. It may very well overlap with what you've built.
I understand that, but I doubt they're going to change it too much from the last iteration of the unearthed arcana. From the impression I got from the videos they released explaining how the testers and they thought of the class. They might change of up alchemist and rereword archivist so it's easier to understand.
Though I am definitely waiting on artificer homebrews until the official release. So I doubt this subclass will step on its toes too much and worse comes to worse, I have to make an update to this subclass.
