Hi, I'm making a character that is very superstitious and I was wondering if any of you have some that I can add to my list.
Here is what I have so far:
Maagwaas superstitions:
Luck is never good or bad, as long as you know what you have to do to turn it in your favor.
An elephant or Loxodon with a raised trunk attracts good luck and wards off bad luck.
A dwarf with an odd number of braids in his beard is up to no good.
A gnome on his head brings fortune, but two on their feet brings mischief.
A human speaking from the left side of its mouth is lying, while one speaking from the right side is making a fool of you. A human can only be trusted if they speak straight at you.
The length of an Elf’s ear hair is a measure of its luck.
The parting of a Dwarfs hair tells the path their life will travel.
You know a Kender has been near when you can only find one sock or glove.
A goblin on the spit is worth two in a pot.
If you look into a mirror in the dark and say Asmodeus’ name three times, a Teifling will be born somewhere.
Every time a bell rings, an Aasimar slays a demonling.
Step on a crack and you'll break your Goddesses back.
If someone slaps you on the back while you are making an ugly face, you will turn into a bridge Troll.
It’s bad luck for you to step over a laying ladder and bad luck for everyone else if you walk under a standing one.
The ashes of a red haired humanoid will guarantee you a good harvest.
If a chicken won’t peck a cake offered to it, the battle at hand will be lost.
If salt is spilled, you must toss a pinch over your left shoulder to blind the demon that caused it to be spilled and a pinch over your right shoulder to silence the devil that is mocking you for being superstitious.
Always exit the bed from the same side as you entered it, else the long rest you just finished will be taken from you.
Breaking a mirror brings seventy one years of bad luck unless you place the pieces in a hempen sack and keep them under running water for the duration.
Beware sleeping in the light of the moon, it causes moon madness.
Walking backwards allows a devil to know where you are going.
Hang a mirror by your door to distract a devil from entering your room.
Lay 13 coins, beans, or pieces of straw near your bed to distract were beasts and shape shifters.
Coil a string or wire tied with twenty knots and place it to trap a ghost or spirit. Unravel the knots to let them go.
Keep a knife under your pillow to ward off demons entering your dreams.
A line of salt around your bed will keep away ghosts, faeries, and wights.
Put salt on a Rocs tail feathers to keep it from flying.
If you draw blood from a witch’s heart, she can’t harm you, but you will gain all of her warts.
If you eat both of the ends of a loaf of bread before eating the middle, you will have great difficulty making ends meet financially.
Eating cabbage cooked causes good luck. Eating cabbage raw causes gas.
Eating peas with one black eye is good for your health. Eating peas with green eyes makes you poop. Eating peas with pink eye means you peed in a ditch recently.
Shake an egg before you crack it to keep an imp from falling out.
The number of crows you see at one time foretells the future:
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret
Never to be told.
If you see a lone raven, you need to salute it or say hi or something cordial, or else you might die.
The same is true of Teiflings and pirates.
If a bird poops on you it is a sign of good luck.
The same is true of Halflings.
A mouse that crosses the path ahead signals fortune around the corner. One that crosses on the path behind is trying to steal your cheese.
A black cat that crosses the path you wish to take portents ill omens. But one that crosses the path you’ve already passed is a sign that the worst is behind you.
An alligator crossing the path you wish to follow portents an impending death. But one that crosses where you have been is a sign of success while gambling or taking a risk.
A dire wolf that crosses the path before you will eat you. One that crosses the path you have already traveled will also eat you.
Find a dragons scale, pick it up, the rest of your days will have good luck. Find its tooth, leave it be, or inside its belly you will see.
Owlbear in the morn, Ranger be warned. Owlbear in the night, Warlocks delight.
Always follow a fifolet in a bog as they lead you to treasure… or certain doom.
A rabbit’s foot brings good luck.
A chicken’s foot wards off ill intent.
A cat’s foot protects from the undead.
A faeries foot keeps willow wisps at bay.
An orc’s foot prevents snoring.
A Nothic’s foot protects secrets.
A dragon’s foot scares off just about anyone.
If your nose itches, you’re going to get in a fight. You can prevent it if your companion slaps your hand and you slap their hand in return. If either of you miss, the fight will end disastrously for you.
If your ears burn someone is talking about you. Wiggling or flapping your ears will cause them to bite their tongue.
When your skin crawls, it means someone is walking across your future grave. Spinning in a circle or dancing may cause them to trip, fall and take your place in that grave.
If your right palm itches money is coming to you.
Never gamble if your left palm itches.
A cramp in your left foot means you went in the wrong direction.
Your right leg falling asleep indicates apprehension over a task that must be done.
A crick in your neck in the morning means you’ll find no treasure this day.
A pain in your back signals you’ve gone too far this day.
Cross the fingers on your right hand when you tell a lie.
Cross the fingers on your left hand to avoid being tricked.
Cross the fingers on both hands when asking for fortunes favor.
Cross your eyes to avoid being cursed.
Accidentally stubbing your toe or biting your tongue signals dire consequences for your endeavors. Stomping the foot or hopping on the opposite one may change your fortune. Spitting three times and crossing your forearms in front of you will banish evil spirits that are waiting to ambush you.
To invite fortunes favor, squeeze an eyelash in your palm while you make a wish, open your hand and blow it out onto the wind. If it blows back toward you it means fortune is against you.
Saying “Rabbit, rabbit” while tapping each knee with each elbow as the sun rises in the morning will bring fortune for the coming day.
Rubbing a fat man’s belly will bring both of you good luck. Rubbing a fat woman’s belly will get you slapped.
Kissing a baby once on each cheek and the forehead will bring fortunes favor, and oddly enough tastes like chicken.
