Changing properties on a weapon - is it even possible?

I'm trying to homebrew a spear with a higher damage die than a d6. I also want to increase the thrown range of the spear from the standard of 20/60.

Is this possible at all or do I have to just indicate it with a text box in the magic weapon description box?
