I am running a campaign where we need to create some special "flying craft". Although in our world there is some technology that allows air travel, it is limited to certain species and not every being. I need these craft to operate on magic or some sort of magical crystal. I need them to fly at speeds that could travel from one end of the realm to the other in a matter of minutes or hours instead of days or weeks. What I had in mind was some sort of "Warp Drive" design but not a warp drive. I need the ship to climb vertically at a controlled rate as well as forward and backward flight. We have no fossils fuels so I need to use magic as the propulsion method. I figured for the vertical takeoff thing I could have the crystal produce a gravity control spell much like the "reverse gravity" spell, but how could I control the speed and height, because that spell causes an object to rise until it hits somethng that stops it. As for the forward and backward propulsion and steering, that's where I start having trouble, we could develop winged vehicles, but I would like to steer away from "airplanes" for right now, I want to use the magic from the crystal to do everything, anyone have any ideas, this is a completely home brew campaign BTW.
Have you on played the game dauntless? Make the ships look like the ones from dauntless. You could have the crystal be a crystal of spell storing? I know it isn't a proper magic item, but base it off ring of spell storing, and allow it to store at least 3rd level spells. Then have it store fly like 5 times, maybe with some higher spell slots. Then have casters cast fly, and maybe have some kind of teleportation circle type magic? I don't know, just mix and match spells, and after all, you are the DM, so you can make exceptions.
