I am playing a cleric in my friend's next dnd 5e campaign. For my cleric I was wanting to have a curse that is suppressed during the beginning of the campaign that shows up more and more later on. The background of my cleric is that she was involved in a cult that wanted to use her for a ritual/sacrifice. They were interrupted however by the military and the followers of Freya and were not able to complete the ritual. The incomplete ritual caused a curse that the followers of Freya were not able to lift, but were only able to suppress for a certain amount of time.
I want to maybe roll a d100 to see if the curse appears maybe every time she goes unconscious or something. I'm not sure though. Any suggestions on the mechanism and what the curse could be would be appreciated!! Thanks!
Do you have something specific in mind for what the curse might do? Will it begin to kill her, or transform her somehow?
For example, if she's being corrupted and you're playing a pure cleric then you could handle that just in how you level her up, i.e- make sure you only take "pure" spells at first, such as radiant damage, healing and such, but at later levels start introducing some of the less pure ones that are more necromantic, deal necrotic damage etc.
You could of course roll to help you decide when to do it if you want it to be a bit of a surprise for yourself; maybe just roll each time you gain access to a new spell choice, if the roll is equal or below your level you have to pick something "dark" and start RP'ing her a little more that way (less patient and understanding, quicker to anger etc.). The difficulty with rolling for it is you might pass every time and it never comes up.
Or do you just intend that once the roll is failed that's it and the curse emerges and has to be dealt with somehow? If it's intended to be story related then often that's just something you would leave in the hands of your DM; let them decide when would be a good (or bad) time for the curse to suddenly emerge and derail the party's plans.

If the nature of the ritual was to create a portal to the Hells or the Abyss then when a certain condition is met, there might be a chance of summoning a fiend.
