I am entertaining the idea of having my paladin either switch or find out he was actually serving another deity who disguised itself for it's own protection. I wanted the deity to turn out to be Shagambi from ToA (NG trickster god of Omu). Very little lore about her and the other ToA gods so it gives room to build a quite a bit, but does anyone else have experience building a patheon or creating deities? What was your process as a DM or player? What helped or didn't help?
In my experience, I've had much more success, both as a DM and a Cleric, when I leave the deities I create fairly vague. That way, you can improvise what you need to in play and not worry about blocking yourself in with all the lore you've established.
Good question. Usually gods in D&D, at least in games I've played, don't directly talk to clerics. They're more like the Lord of Light from Game of Thrones, for example, so RPing a deity isn't really an issue for me. If you wanted more "human" gods, then yeah, the DM would portray them.

Yeah I kind of like that route as DM, how did you do it as a player though? Doesn’t your DM RP for your deity?
