In attempting to make homebrew spells, I've come across the unfortunate issue of my being a novice at D&D; I don't know what level of damage and bonus effects a spell of a certain level should have.
Can someone give me a range of damage for every spell level from cantrip to 9?
Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
Meteor swarm. Like I said, those numbers are a bit unreliable.
The table I posted is the average damage. Not the exact damage.

I think the chart in the DMG is fairly accurate under two assumptions 1) it's better for following the chart to the letter to give underpowered spells since the DM/player is more likely to respond with a correction when seeing them under-perform (where a DM seeing a custom spell over-perform might be more likely to ban custom spells as a result), and 2) the chart is aiming for the spells that haven't been given a deliberate performance boost by the devs because they wanted the "iconic" spells of old to be go-to choices in this version.
The issue then being that so many spells have been given that iconic status bump that it makes it hard to find one that hasn't. Chromatic orb, Cloudkill and flame strike being (hopefully not the only) examples of spells that are actually close to what the table and its accompanying text suggest.

Yeah, I only know about it because I paid close enough attention to things being said in the lead-up and early release period to hear Mike Mearls mention the design choice (that I don't agree with, but am also not so off-put by as to undo it with house-rules) to intentionally make some spells better than their same-level but less <insert exaggerated shrug here> peers.

Look in the DM's Guide. There's not much, and it's not very accurate, but what exists is there.
