(OOC - remember guys, you don't have to clear everything in one hit! West March campaigns, and even normal D&D campaigns, are designed for some places to be revisited. So if you feel you're getting in over your heads, you can head out to return when you're stronger.)
As Gandalon flies above the damaged floor, he can see a ladder leading down, apparently left by the dead explorers you have found so far. The familiar drops down into the darkness below. Roll a Perception check for Gandalon in the darkness of the hole. (Also, are you perceiving through Gandalon's senses or just sending him out?)
As Horatio's familiar tries to make heads or tails of the hole to the north, would you like to do anything else? Explore more of the library? Inspect the bookshelves? The two nothics that continue to watch maintain their distance but keep their eyes on you for the moment.
Samael, as you replace your mace, that same feeling in the far reaches of your mind returns from before when the mace lashed out at the nothic. A voice, perhaps your own or maybe your patron's, or perhaps you're just imagining it, but a single word seems to faintly echo from that place in your mind... "More?"
samael tries to shake the voice off "my life is my own. my mind is my own, and I will not fall of my own volition..." Samael seems to gain a little positive emotion back, and returns to the party.
"So, it looks like we could either retreat or do what that guard sent us for. I am not all that interested in ancient books that are more dust than paper or getting into trouble undergeound so I'd be fine with retreating."
Trin eyes are nervously moving between the two Nothics and the darkness beyond them, looking out for any danger.
"A temporary retreat seems like a wise measure, although I hate to waste this lantern oil. Let's give communication one last shot."
He steps forward, hands open in a gesture of peace. In Deep Speech:
"Nothics! Can you understand me? Can we speak together? We intend to leave soon, but I would prefer to talk on our situation first if you are willing."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The nothics remain at their perches along the low wall that lines east and west landings, clutching the pillars with sharp claws. The large green eyes widen once again as Perigord attempts to communicate to them in deep speech. They then turn their attention on Trinjya as she had just spoken to Perigord, barking and coughing something in a low growl, and both stare intently at you with an unnerving green eye.
Trinjya, make two deception checks - first DC 24 and the second DC 14
(OOC - just waiting on Gandalon's perception check and I'll resolve his descent into the hole.)
(Just sending Gandalon out to report back telepathically, not seeing through his senses at the moment. Though, if he can get away with it, he might switch into his familiar's frame of vision for the briefest moment to confirm what the imp might describe.)

As Gandalon descends into the hole, the darkness is much worse. Though he is able to make out that at the bottom of the ladder is some form of narrow corridor. As Horatio's familiar looks into the darkness and tries to look around, Gandalon notices some movement and hears something but before he can react or let Horatio know, several creatures attack...
1. Wisdom Save DC 12 or charmed, speed halved and disadvantage on attacks for next turn. And then, Dexterity Save DC 12 or 11 cold damage.
2. Wisdom Save DC 12 or frightened for next turn. And then, Strength Save DC 12 or pushed back 30ft through the tunnel.
3. Wisdom Save DC 12 or charmed, speed halved and disadvantage on attacks for next turn (if first charm does not affect). Then, Strength Save DC 12 or pushed back another 30ft through the tunnel.
"i have damned us all through my vain hope...." samael is losing hope........
"Not yet, friend! We're not meat in their maws just yet."

Samael returns to his mace, secures it, and sheathes it.
"an object that can only hurt all it touches.........a microcosm of my late existence."

Perigord shrugs.

"you try surviving hell's explosions and the misery that follows. then by all means, critique my lack of humors."
