The dragon listens to Evendur and Valas. Every time they mention their fear the dragon seems to be pleased. When Valas asks him his name, Lennithon replies "It is a nice change tomeet an elf who knows its place. I am called Lennithon. Remember it and spread word to others." He then spells it so Valas can get it right. When Evendur offers the azurites the dragon laughs. His laughter sounds like thunder, and the scent of ozone intensifies. "Is this truly the best you have to offer? Eight tiny stones?" He stares at them menacingly, thinking about what they have said. Finally he says, "I suppose if this is all you can beg with, this town is hardly worth my valuable time. I allow you to survive our encounter." He reaches out his claw and takes the gems from Evendur. He then spreads his wings and flies away, getting dust on those standing in the courtyard. As he departs he mutters "Mondath can fight them herself."
Kendes stares after the retreating form of the dragon, frowning a bit. "... Are they all that full of themselves?" he wonders briefly. Then his frown narrows. "Mondath... who is Mondath?"
(Scouring his brain for a memory, if it was ever mentioned? : 2 , that would be a nope)
"Lennithon" whispers Valas to himself as the dragon takes flight. He watches in wonder at its massive size yet the power of its wings to still carry such girth. He studies the scales and the dragon's proportions to see what they are really like.
Valas then turns to Sir Evendur, his eyes a bit wide and his motions a bit rigid still as his nerves begin to calm. "Well, I suppose that went well. I wonder..."
Suddenly Valas is on the move, dashing for the stairs and up to the top of the keep. He hopes to catch sight of the dragon once more and see what direction it flies in, and if it truly leaves the area around Greenest.
Walking out onto the courtyard, Kendes watches the dragon fly away, barely taking note of Valas scrabbling after it, but for an unamused snort at what he considers to be the elf's undisclosed eagerness to learn more about dragons. Instead he approaches Evendur, a cold look on his face.
"It looks like your bribe was successful. Did the dragon tell you anything useful? Such as what its purpose was, or why it came here in the first place.... or what it even really wants?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Lennithon departs, Evendur turns to the approaching triton. "Yes, brave Kendes, not my finest moment I admit, but I think it will be some time before Lennithon will leave his lair again, hopefully not before we will pay him a visit there and settle the score with him. I did not really have the chance for a full interrogation but he mentioned that someone named Mondath can fight us herself, suggesting the raiders are not actually Lennithons servants but rather the servants of Tiamat and the cult leader would be this Mondath. It would seem we are not out of the woods yet. Let´s go up on the parapet and watch the movements of the raiders and if we can spot this Mondath woman. Perhaps we can convince Mondath to leave as well, unless you would prefer that we fight her?" Evendur moves up the parapet and tries to assess the situation outside the keep. Perception:9
Kosef exhales. He seems to have been holding his breath. He walks toward Kendes and Evendur. "Yes," he says. "What did it say? Have we kept our promise? Amazing."
He runs his fingers through his read beard, thinking about what he just saw.
Valas is able to rush up the stairs, and is able to catch sight of the mighty blue creature flying away down south. While Valas looks up, Evendur scans the ground below, looking for Mondath. After a few moments of searching he spots a woman dressed in purple robes, surrounded by twelve guards.
Escobert has crept up from below the keep, and hurries over to Kosef and Kendes. "Did it work?" he asks.
"Just one, two, three, bah not that many guards." Evendur says to himself. Then he turns to the courtyard and shouts "Kendes, Kosef, Escobert, I think I may have located the cult leader Mondath, come up and join us on the parapet and we will decide on her fate. Mighty Torm will see us through this long night of terror."
"South..." mutters Valas to himself, pondering where the dragon's lair might be. He takes note of any features of the land in that directions, such as mountain tops and then returns to the others. Valas is happy to fill them in on the few words exchanged with Lennithon.
"... The dragon has taken off, for the time being. But we have a new threat now, someone named Mondoth. The instigator of this whole attack, I'd guess. Let's go up and meet with the others," he says as Evendur's shout rains down from overhead. Once he's reached the top, he looks down over the cultists and growls. "A deal with a dragon is bad enough. There is no way I am going to parlay with that woman and her cult," Kendes says firmly as he watches the progress of the purple-robed figure from the battlement. "I'm sorry, but there are limits. We may need to rest before we can face her down, but won't strike another deal with a dragon cult, ever again. They started this war, and we should finish it."
Kosef joins the others. "Did the dragon promise it would stay away?" he asks Valas and Evendur, "or did it just leave?" He considers Mondath and listens to Kendes. "The cult leader probably would encourage the dragon to return. She'll want it to break its oath. Not good. To really keep our promise," he glances to the governor, probably hoping for confirmation, "she may have to be defeated."
"You've done fine work," Escobert says when Kendes tells him the results. "We're in your debt. I can't believe you actually managed to bargain with a dragon."
Up on the parapet, Governor Nighthill nods in response to Kosef. "We can't let her live. But how do we get to her? She seems well protected."
As everyone is looking out over the town, a creature strides into the dim light of the dying fires around the keep. Although it is shaped like a human, it is at least seven feet tall, its skin is covered in blue scales, its fingers bear wicked claws, and its face has the muzzle and reptilian eyes of a dragon. The creature stops about eighty yards from the main gate of the keep and scans the walls. A line of sixteen kobolds fans out behind it. With their spears, they prod four human prisoners into the dim light. You can make out a woman, a teenage boy in a blood soaked tunic, and two children. Then the creature hails the keep.
"Defenders of Greenest! This has been a successful night and I am feeling generous. Do you see these four pitiful, useless prisoners? We have no need for them, so I will trade them back to you. Send out your best warrior to fight me, and you can have these four in exchange."
One of the guards on the parapet yells, "My sister!" He tries to head down, but Escobert and some other soldiers restrain him.
Nighthill turns to you and says, "My friends, you've demonstrated your prowess all throughout this frightful night. I realize this is an awful burden to ask you to bear, but any of you has a better chance to defeat that horror than my militia have."
"I will go down and fight that vile creature, mighty Torm is with me yet." Evendur says and prepares to leave the parapet.
(OOC:Evendur actually thought about trying to intimidate them to go home since their dragon left but now it seems we have no choice but to send someone down. Obviously Evendur volunteers for this but he can be talked out of it. He is not the best fighter I´m afraid but he is definitely ready to sacrifice himself. He is also open to other suggestions as long as they include saving the townsfolk.)
(I actually don't know who our best fighter is. We're all pretty beat up, haha. Kendes is in full health. Valas has the highest armor class out of all of us but is out of spell slots. Kosef has the most HP. So forth and so on. We can draw straws, too. Kendes can volunteer if you want, he's certainly in the mindset to fight something. Honestly I think we all have an equal chance of doing well or poorly in a 1v1. Not that it has to come to that if we want to try to ambush them...)
"Why do we have to fight fair?"Kendes grumbles more to himself than anyone else. "As if that's an honorable trade." He does stop Evendur from charging down, though. "Don't be stupid and rush into this. Which of us thinks we can take on that creature most competently? Who feels the least tired right now?" he asks. "Our goal isn't only to rescue those prisoners, but to kill that bastard too, isn't it?"
Evendur stops still standing on the parapet and turns to the others. "I am sorry brave Kendes, but I for one will fight fair even if it would mean the death of me, although I may not be the one who has the best chance of defeating that monster." He points his blade down to the challenger. "Perhaps the four of us should go down together and he may have his choice on who to fight, that at least should show him that none of us are afraid of facing him."
(OOC: Can´t really see how an ambush can help us save the townsfolk as they probably will be killed if we don´t send someone down right now, but we will be able to retaliate at their lair later with plenty of ambushes hopefully. I think Kendes will have all the revenge he wants, just not tonight. Evendur has 5 points of lay on hands and is at 7/11. Kipio could perhaps heal someone too. Evendur could go by himself but I actually vote for the four of us going down together since that would be the coolest, too me anyway. :-) Perhaps we could still go for an intimidate down there making them decide to cut their losses.)
Kosef squints at the human shaped dragon creature. "Unlawfully taking hostages. Leading an attack against Greenest. He desires a beheading. Practically calls for it." He looks at the others. "I think we should all go down. While weakened, I do feel a Second Wind coming on. But each of us would be a good candidate. I can try or we can draw straws." He looks back into the courtyard. "We ought to go quickly."
(I mean ambush for the rest of us to free the prisoners, while the big guy is fighting the "champion." Technically if "the champion" loses he's not freeing the prisoners anyway *and* he will have gotten one of us down, unless I got the deal wrong and he's releasing the prisoners for a chance to fight one of us.)
Kendes nods. "On this, we're agreed. Let's go quickly, the lives of those four depend on it."
"Kendes!" Kosef smiles. "We agree!" He looks at the others. "Well, friends," he says. "One of us could roll to fight him. Perhaps be beaten by him." He takes a small bag from his pocket. Inside it are dice of many shapes. Kosef's big, clumsy fingers sort the dice. "First, we would have to number ourselves."
"Brave companions, as we are all equally able do fight this foe perhaps it is only fair to let fate decide who will have that honour. Numbers have never been my strong suit so just give me one and cast the die." Evendur answers a tad bit impatient to go down and face the raiders.
