There is little to go on but your party made no aggressive move against the elves so the 'treants' so there is nothing to protect the elves from, and if they were aligned with the elves in any way why not sound an alarm. Something seems 'predatory' about the way they quickly and almost silently encircled you before deciding to strike.
Weighing everything together you don't think these are 'good' treants.
