On the way back Alessandra caught up with harrying Sezsu and walked with him for a while. "Unusual people, aren't they? Nothing as I expected. Where you really not moved at all by their story? I confess, as romantic and fairytalish as it sounded something there... was inspiring. But may be I am growing tired of that place. Daggerford is a lovely place but... so small. And these thick walls... Feels like a small village where even gossiping is boring because everyone knows each other too well. Would not you want a break from it too? I almost want to go with these Vistani. If not to really free that Borovia, then to see something new at least. May be get some more stories from these people or simply to travel a bit - they seemed to know how to do it."
As Alessa turns her attention to Sezsu, Ed strolls along next to Zied. "A job well handled that. Not a single extra scratch on the duchess's armor. Though I can't help but feel there was something odd about those folks. How they had heard of a small group such as we, and their belief we were to aid them. That would be a mighty divine intervention indeed! Tell me Zied, how did you view their plight?"
"Vagrants and vagabonds always surround themselves with mystique and romanticism. At best, they're layabouts content with sleeping in fields and contributing nothing to the society that spawned them, or at worst, they're dangerous grifters who," he clears his throat and emphasizes "demand alms by threatening to hex innocents."
He continues to walk in silence for several moments before continuing.
"Stanimir certainly was beguiling. Somehow he managed to convince you that they came seeking us specifically. The way he wove his words together was a masterful display of expert chicanery but if you think back, clearing your mind of the illusions he fashioned, I believe he said that they sought out heroes like us. And that statement of itself is worded to make us think ourselves heroes! He is a clever one, I'll give him that," Sezsu chuckles. "As for the gossip and secrets and intrigue of a small but consequential town like Daggerford... I live for it." A large, toothy smile overtakes his face.
Glancing over and seeing Alessa's expression, he tries to lighten the mood and insert a hint of hope to his usual nihilistic ramblings. "But let's see what Her Grace has to say about the situation. She wanted to be rid of them and, if possible, find out why they were here. We accomplished all that and more. Let's sit and eat our well-earned cake. I'm certain we'll soon find out if she'll require more of us."
Idle trotting along with the others, Zied replies to Ed-someone Zied finds trustworthy if perhaps a bit too "fates of the divine" that clashes with his past experiences-yet their belief works well with his distrust of. Faith and Logic temper each other well. "Well, they obviously have some abilities in magic, or tools to supplement that. Considering that we don't operate exactly quietly-we are well known enough to be invited to the Baroness' dinner party after all. They seemed....floaty-in a word." Scratching at his own wrist as he talks, Zied looks up briefly. "They seemed to live in their own little world, felt more like they saw us-and I assume the previous guards and the villages as if through fog of their own beliefs." Taking a moment to look Ed in the eyes. "Simply put? I think they've experienced something horrible or profound at some point, lost connection with the real world, and latched onto us-likely through gossip or previous work be talked about. Of course, that does not mean I dont' believe they have a tangible issue. One that we could potentially help them with. But the fact they did not even broach the subject of payment and expected us to agree in that moment, shows that they feel like they're following a narrative-not a conversation."
Zied shrugs, thinking to himself 'life is strange life is odd, but life isn't boring. I want to show you the world outside of your shop, of your lab. I will.' and responds to Sezsu, "I'd rather an eclair than cake.. hard to make those are."
Alessandra smiled and threw away another bright red leaf she picked up on the way back. "It seems I am alone in my longing for travel. Who would think just a few years back that I would be the one wishing for an adventure, while young men around would talk about eclairs and pleasures of a quiet domestic life! You are right, of course, don't listen to my bubbling. It must be the Autumn, or the stars, or the songs... Just a mood."The rest of the way she was walking in silence.
A harsh, sibilant chuckle emanates from Sezsu like sandpaper across more sandpaper. "The grandest adventures happen in 'quiet' domesticity when dealing in secrets and intrigue. But let's enjoy our luxury while it's afforded us. I have a bad feeling tonight's intrigue may be tomorrow's adventure whether we like it or not."
"That they had such strength in their beliefs was naught but a credit to their character Zied. It is not somethign that fogs the mind, but can give you a clarity that those without it may not be able to follow. You appear to have read far more into them that I cared to look for, they seemed good natured and though their tale certainly sounded a little unfortunate, I'd imagine that it has been spun a few times and grown in the telling." Ed seems to ponder that, in his experience those that needed help wore it plainly on their faces - the church had taught him the concept of stoicism, and surpressing the emotions that were not appropriate, though to act to gayly would seem a stetch if their lands and history were so fraught.
Catching the end of Alessa and Sezsu's words, Ed chimed in, "That bad feeling is probably just a little indigestion Sezsu, the walk here after dinner might have been a bit soon."
The group continues their conversation, in good spirits after their success in fulfilling Morwen's request. The wind picks up, impatiently ushering you on. A cold gust sends dried and shriveled leaves skittering around you on the dirt path leading back toward town. The early turners, these are shriveled and brown, their vitality and color faded. They crunch beneath your feet.
A large cloud creeps over the moon, casting a vast shadow on the road and surrounding country side. The odd star can still be seen struggling through the odd gap in the clouds.
The mist blanketing the forest has moved inward, creeping in closer to Daggerford.
Alessa shuddered and tightened the cloak around herself. "Have not noticed the nights are so cold already. May be walk a bit faster?" The group was fast enough, but something in that sudden cold and the creeping mist, eating up the colors of the bright warm autumn made her uneasy. By now she also begun to dream about if nor eclairs than at least the warmth of the duchess's halls.
(small rewind to the commentary on Adventure Wunderlust) Zied would disagree, "Oh, I have a sense of adventure, travel is lovely. Its dangerous though. Traveling expressly for danger more so. If you want to take a trip-I'm all for it, but if its a job. It needs pay to offset death."
Zied freezes for a moment, "Hold" he warns. Taking a few moments to turn and look at a patch of trees, and listen for movement. Before easing up slight. "I thought I saw something... A Bear maybe? ...I don't see or hear anything now though. It probably wasn't hungry enough for the four of us." Still, Zied is wary of large local wildlife and unties his peace knot upon his weapon. Simply in case. As he shuffles back together for the group's trip. More wary than previous, between the heavy mist, strange follks and apparent beary visit.
"Hm," Sezsu intones quietly, barely above a whisper. "I didn't see anything but there were definitely footfalls in the leaves beyond our own. Didn't sound like a bear." He absentmindedly massages his wrist where he keeps a small dagger hidden in his sleeve. Still staring into the mist, unblinking, he softly asks, "Make for the gate or stand and confront?"
Zied follows suit-but will maintain pace with whoever is near the end. Calling out his usual advice "Pair up buddy system, Don't get separated in the mist."
If there is a moment, He will also crunch on a small violet pill he pulls from an inner poncho pocket. AKA Guidance for 1min. Sezsu sounds like he's Dashing; Alessa sounds like she's jogging but will run if need be. So Zied is keeping pace with the group without leaving anyone alone if they're slower
The woods grow quiet, and the air, chill. No sounds of wildlife seem able to penetrate the gathering fog. The mist creeps toward the edges of town, growing ever closer. Where it passes, it hangs thick in the air, turning the trees within it into gray ghosts.
Passing into the city, you find that the watchmen normally standing guard upon the wall have deserted. Indeed, there is no one else at all in the wide intersection of Daggerford’s entry square. The lantern flames illuminating the roads and doorways flicker feebly, visibly struggling to stay lit. As the fog encroaches the walls, each torch and lantern it touches is snuffed out.
Unless something prevents him (ie. the mist overtaking them or the group stopping), Sezsu's plan is to make it back to the relative safety of the keep. As he runs past the square and through the streets beyond, he looks to see if the rest of the town is as deserted as the square and the gate.
"How long have we being out?! Where is everybody?!"Alessa's questions were mostly rhetorical - her companions could not know more than she did here - but she wanted to here something else besides the howling winds, even if only her own voice. "Never saw the mist that thick either. Somehow do not want to touch it too, gives me the creeps just by looking at it." She turned on the road leading to the castle.
Observing as the lights are snuffed, "It is clearly not average.. Fog can't snuff flames. The lack of people... " As they pass streets and random things, Zied splashs a bit of fluid on something small-the item beginning to glow softly (5ft bright 5ft dim) Retaining an eye on the light as they continue to move-to see if it snuffs magical light as well. "I'm uncertain we're where we think we are. No one is here that I can tell..."
((GM; Is there anything about the mist, or the feeling of magic in there air (if any) that reminds Zied of a similiar feeling to when the "workshop" used to summon creatures for materials etc? Zied is worried. Historically that did not go well for him))

(I am assuming at the spot we're at the Gates to the village and to the keep are both pretty far?)
The soft crunching of leaves beneath the purposeful step behind the mist ceases. There is no response.
In the distance, a raven caws.
Behind you, the mist has moved alarmingly fast. It draws closer, moving quick enough to absorb the path, inch by inch.
Ahead, the torches of the gates of Daggerford illuminate the city’s high wall.
"I don't like this at all. Mist doesn't move like that. Run for the gate. GO!" Sezsu says as he turns and bolts toward the town wall.
