"Sounds like a rioght lovely spot fer restin'." Zyllith smiled back towards Arisa. Though she loved her time in Waterdeep, she was just as happy to be on the road once again, heading into another adventure. She followed closely behind Arisa as they made their way into the village, curious to see this Sleeping Dragon Inn Arisa spoke so highly of.
Seeing Rassalantar ahead, Belkas starts looking for an ambush.
'Crowley, fly ahead invisibly and scout the area. I wouldn't want to be caught unaware. The last time we walked into a village, it was festering with goblins, wargs, orcs, and the Black Network.'
The half-elf ensures he has his spell focus ready. He doesn't say anything to the rest of the party, because it may be nothing, but at least one of them should be expecting trouble.
Crowley flies ahead, but doesn't see anything that would indicate trouble. As you make your way into the small hamlet, you can see that it's a community of six walled farms that are centered around a spring-fed pound that drains into a large marshland to the east. To the west of the farmhouses you see a narrow patch of trees that partially masks the ruins of an old keep, and to the east of the pond you see the inn that Arisa had spoken of, The Sleeping Dragon.
Her statement about this village being under Waterdeep's protection seems to be true as well. Just off the road behind the Sleeping Dragon, you see an old barracks, and given the couple of chainmail-clad soldiers that you see about the town, plus the few that you saw patrolling the road on your way to Rassalantar, it's clear that things haven't changed in this regard.
You approach the Sleeping Dragon, which has an accompanying stable. Thin bands of smoke escape from two chimneys that rise from the thatched roof.
Entering the inn through its main door on the southeast corner of the building of The Sleeping Dragon Inn, you see the main fireplace was on the west wall. A bar with high stools runs halfway along the northern wall, with a rare large mirror behind it. The kitchen is situated on the east side of the building, accessible through an archway. The east wall of the main room has cloak pegs, crates, barrels and stairs up to the upper floor. Up against the southern wall are nine long tables with benches, and the middle of the room was filled with round tables and chairs. There are a few folks in here, including some travelers, and a couple of off-duty guards, but there's certainly room for you at one of the tables.
To Arisa's eyes, it pretty much appears the same as she remember. Behind the bar, you see a stout shield dwarf woman, who you're pretty sure was here during your last visit years ago. As you look around, you recall hearing a rumor when you were younger that one of the serving girls here was actually a Gold Dragon in disguise.
Arisa looks around in wonder, and smiles at the memories. “Yes- pretty much as I remember. They used to say a girl who worked here was a disguised gold dragon. Never found out if that was true....” she quietly tells the others. She shyly approaches the dwarf woman. “hello- we’re travelers from waterdeep looking for lodging and meals for the evening, I’m Arisa, Cleric of Mystra”.
The dwarven women behind the bar greets you with a hearty salutation. "Well, ye come to the right place, then! Thanks for choosing us over all the other inns in the area!"
She laughs, obviously joking, since there are no other settlements within miles of Rassalantar. "What can I get ye? Plenty o' Deep Ale on tap, plus Darndarr, and our own house stout. Plus a nice, simple pale ale, for those who don't like the dark stuff. We got berry wine and the usual array o' spirits 'n' liquors. Food tonight's lamb stew 'n' bread, just like it is most nights."
(Deep Ale, also referred to as Fire Ale, is a popular Waterdhavian frothy alcoholic drink reinforced, or "warmed" with grain-based liquor, "Warming" drinks is a common practice of adding various stronger liquors, usually grain-based, to a drink, done to add weight to watered down drinks, which you often find in the taverns of the Coast. Darndarr is a nutty-tasting ale commonly found throughout the Sword Coast.)
"Aye, rioght lovely pub ye got 'ere. Got a welconin' charm ta be sure." Zyllith replied cheerfully to Arisa before turning to the dwarven innkeeper and responding to her with a happy wave of her hand, "Aye! Yer too kind! How 'bout a round o' yer lovely stew fer me an' me mates! 'Long wit' their drinks 'course. I'd love ta try out yer house stout for meself!"
She turned toward the rest of the party as she motioned for the others to order their drinks as well.
Siobhan thanks Zyllith and proceeds to awkwardly ask the innkeeper if there's a chance for any tea. Or maybe some hot water? She has her own herbal blend on hand if need be but she's always eager to try local blends.
Belkas settles down to enjoy his hot meal and dark ale. After identifying the different exits, positioning his chain against a wall so no one can approach him unaware, and surreptitiously checking out the other patrons for possible threats, he relaxes somewhat.
He says to the group, "You know, this is the first town we have traveled to where no one has tried to kill us. I could almost get used to this. I was also thinking," he says betwine bites, "that if there were a gold dragon here, I bet they could give us some good advice on how to interact with a green and come out alive and with all our fingers and toes."
The cheerful dwarven proprietor serves up a hearty bowl of stew for each of you, (3 sp/ea) and whatever drink choice you prefer (5 cp/ea), including black tea for Siobhan, or just a mug of hot water if that's preferred. She also inquires whether you need rooms for the night, and if the answer is yes, then she has space in one of the common rooms available for 5 sp/ea.)
There are a handful of other patrons inside the inn, about 20 or so, mostly travelers, and a few off-duty members of the town guard. Most of them are together in small groups, although there appear to be a couple of solo travelers, a stout human female who might be in her 30s, with long, curled auburn hair, pale skin (judging by her dress, she might be an acolyte or cleric of some kind) and a much younger women with very pale, almost milky white skin and long, wavy brown hair and a small nose piercing and spectacles. She looks rather tall and she's fiddling with some kind of small device in her hands, although you cannot see what that is.
“We would like to stay the night, please. We’re off for a bit of an adventure and in need of a good night’s rest.” Arisa pays for her meal and ale, as well as the group’s lodging, with a generous tip. (Took off 2 gold) She smiles at the dwarf, and says “ in the tavern or this area- with the name of the sleeping dragon.. is there anyone about who knows much about dragonkind? I just thought maybe the name had a story behind it- and we are interested in information.”
Belkas waits to hear what the response to Arisa's question is. More information on dragonkind would be useful, but seeing a gold dragon in human form would be something truly special.
The innkeeper answers Arisa, "Dragons, eh? I can tell you all you need to know about dragons... they're dangerous and you should try to avoid 'em! Hahaha!!!"
"Nah... I don't think we got any dragon experts 'round here. And as far as the inn goes, it's just a name... don't know where it came from, but that's what it was when I bought the place, so I kept it."
"Just curious, though... what'd ya want to know about dragons?
“Errr.” Arisa looks at the others in the group and then seems to make a decision.” Well, it so happens we need to meet with a dragon, if we can.. and umm… not a good one. A green. But we need to discuss something with her that we’re sure she, as well as all dragonkind, would be interested in- So we were… hoping to get some advice from someone who knew more, about how to get our message across before we get- err.. eaten.” She smiles thinly. “I know, we’re crazy- or at least I am. They didn’t really want to go, but I felt it was the right thing, considering, and they are still here” She smiles at her companions.
"Aye, she's rioght. I still think it's bloody daft ta try to 'ave a cup o' tea wit' a dragon whot might be thinking we're tha biscuits. But still coming along ta' make sure me friends don' end up in tha' green's belly." Zyllith adds with a smirk, "'Sides, if'n I weren't willing ta' dive inta foolish danger every once in o' while, I wouldnae become a pirate in tha' first place. So if'n ye' got anythin' whot might help us, it'd be rioght mighty 'preciated!"
The innkeeper laughs before exclaiming, "Well, I agree with yer friend here. That sounds like a fools errand to me! I don't know why'n anyone would want to willingly plan a meeting with a dragon, let alone a green one. From what I've heard, those kind are quite temperamental. But what do I know... I just serve beer and soup!"
Then, the stout woman who's sitting alone sits up a little straighter, and you can see the pendant she wears on her chest that bears the symbol of the god Tyr. She looks over and says,
"Excuse me... I couldn't help but overhear. If I may, can I ask what is is that you need to discuss with a green dragon and what advice you hope to gain from such a meeting? Generally it is my belief that evil creatures like green dragons should be slain, not met with in council or negotiations. However I'm also wise enough to know that it is sometimes necessary to bend the rules, so to speak, if it's a means to further the greater good in the world, which is, of course, always of the utmost importance."
Arisa thanks the barkeep, and turns to the woman. “I’m glad you asked.. we need all the help we can get. I am Arisa, cleric of Mystra. I see you serve Tyr? . The issue we wish to discuss with the.. err,… dragon does concern a threat where the greater good would be served by the cooperation of dragonkind- and we believe she might help… if we don’t get eaten before we convey the message. It involves a plot involving the ancient enemies of dragonkind- the giants”.
An invisible Crowley pokes Belkas in the ear and telepathically communicates, 'Did you hear that? Evil must be slain!? That sounds pretty intolerant, close-minded, and ill-spirited to me. Of course, she is saying the same thing I did all along about the dragon, which makes me feel filthy. Uck. Now I need to take a long bath.'
Crowley turns and nods along with what Arisa says. He then smiles at the woman, and continues, "We would not usually seek to talk to a green dragon; however, we have been told that is the best chance we have to get information on what is happening with the giants. Giants arrived in a floating castle, attacked the village of Nightstone from above, and stole their monolith. In coordination with goblins and ogres, hill giants attacked the town of Goldenfields, and we encountered two others less than a day's travel from Waterdeep. It is concerning."
