"Rioght, mate, totaly jacked on tha first half of the plan. Second half, not as much." Zyllith replied to Osmord's comments. After a moment she leans back to quietly ask Belkas, "Is goblin some sort'o delicacy in these parts?"
Vernon, not noticing Zyllith's delicacy question, pipe up from the front, "Killing the goblins I can handle. Eating the goblins is not at all necessary when we're in range of real food." He looks longingly down the path towards Nightstone, taps the face of his shield, then looks back at Osmord. "Although, I will admit that using the aging process on meat instead of cheese is an interesting concept..."
Vernon perks up and launches into one of his favorite subjects. "Cheese is curdled milk, separated from the whey, pressed into molds, with various additives along the way. Many, but not all, cheeses are then aged in cellars and attics to develop their unique flavor." He pulls out his small block of cheese. "This one has obviously had some strange additive and a bit of time, given how pungent it is."
(I will assume that the two non-darkvision characters, Arisa and Osmord, are using torches to see at nighttime.)
After following the trail for ten miles over the rolling terrain in the increasing darkness, during which you spend some time getting to know each other a bit, you begin to hear the ringing of a bell. The sound grows louder as Nightstone finally comes into view. A river flows around the settlement, forming a moat, and as you get closer, you can just make out the high wooden palisade on the other side of the water. However, even for those with darkvision, you cannot see anything beyond the wall.
Apart from the ringing of the bell, you hear no other activity in the area. As you walk up to the edge of the moat, trail ends at a lowered drawbridge that spans the slowly moving river. Beyond the drawbridge, two stone watchtowers flank an open gap in the palisade.
Arisa adds “cheese can be made from the milk of cows, sheep or goats, usually, and it also gets its flavor and texture some based on where it is made. I only know the varieties of cheeses around Daggerford, but I have read of many others. I enjoy most cheeses, but you might have different tastes than Vernon or myself Osmord” She smiles.
“Perhaps we should discuss our tactics should we face goblins. From what I have read, they can be quite devious. I plan to use my magic from afar, and then will hit them with my staff when they get close. I have some magic to help with healing those of our group who are hurt, and to help three of us be more effective in combat.
(Her confidence when she says “hit them with my quarterstaff” is a bit surprising coming from a girl who looks barely strong enough to carry her loaded traveling pack. )
(had this written but didn’t post until after the DM post!). Arisa is using a hooded Lantern hooked onto her shield.

Arisa opens the hood on her lantern to shed some more light ahead. She says “A ringing bell at night is not a good sign. Perhaps a fire, or worse! We should be on our guard.” She continues to advance with the group towards the drawbridge- searching for any signs of life.

On tactics: "I'm rather useless at range, but also limited by the light." Vernon looks at his torch. "I should stay in front, but within your lantern's radius."
On bell: Vernon switches the torch out for his mace (still carrying the shield) and moves slightly closer to Arisa for the time being. "Is it possible the Goblins have left already?" he says hopefully.
"Rioght, I'm good fighting at hug range, like to get up and poke 'em wit my stick." Zyllith explains her tactics as she pats the rapier at her hip.
In response to the bell she adds, "Might be I go on ahead all sneaky sneaky and see whot's whot. I'm fairly a'right in tha dark."
Zylith moved ahead of the rest of the group, sliding in close to the shadows and away from the torchlights of her companions as she moved as quietly as she could through the darkness.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Belkas looked around. "I don't see any signs of fire or smell smoke, so we should expect the worse until we know better. If it is goblins, the ones I have heard of are cowardly and prefer ambushes and traps to a fair fight."
He watched as Zyllith move ahead. 'Good luck,' he thought, 'and may your gods protect you.'
Strapping his spear to his backpack, he checked that his daggers were ready, and murmured a short rhyming phrase in Undercommon.
The half-elf moved beside Osmord. "I also attack best from afar, and unlike the rest, I am of very little use in a close fight. Well, it looks like you might get a chance to dine this night after all, my friend."

Osmord smacks his lips in anticipation but does not answer as he has begun to ritual cast detect magic. He murmurs his incantation, while slowly rolling one clawed hand over the other. Pinprick pins of light begin to appear in his normally coal black eyes.
(OOC: Casting time ten minutes and started as the town came into sight).
Moving cautiously, you all proceed towards the edge of the drawbridge and begin walking slowly across the thick oaken planks. The whole thing is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, with heavy iron chains are bolted to the far edges that rise up to the two watchtowers.
Looking across, you get a better view of the 15-foot-high wooden palisade of sharpened logs that encloses the village, and the two stone watchtowers that flank the open gate. Each tower is 20 feet tall, with a roof enclosed by crenellated battlements. You see no guards, and no one appears to greet you as you begin to cross. In fact, all is silent, except for the sound of the incessantly ringing bell that’s coming from inside the village.
Zyllith
Slipping silently ahead into the darkness, you cross to the other side of the drawbridge, pass beneath the opening in the palisade and enter the edge of the village. Looking around you don't see anyone, or any kind of movement, but you do see a large boulder, about 3 feet in diameter embedded in the earth just beyond the watchtower on the right, and another one up ahead in the center of the wide row that you guess leads to the town square. In fact, looking around, you see a handful of these boulders strewn about the area.
Scanning your immediate surroundings, you can see a wooden building up ahead and to the left that appears to be some kind of temple. It has a few stained glass windows, and a slender steeple that is clearly the location of the ringing bell. You can see that the door is currently open. Up ahead and to the right, you see what appears to be a large garden or small farm field that's full of growing wheat.
Arisa says “Well we will see. That bell is troubling! And where are the guards?”
(She will cast Shillelagh on her staff (which she will keep up until battles are done, a bonus action casting, 1 minute duration) and move across the bridge, keeping her eyes on the tops and arrow slits of the towers, and any murder holes in the gate. If anyone goblin-like appears to shoot at the group, she will ready an action to shoot them with Fire bolt. Otherwise she will proceed through the gate.
Zyllith looked about the mess before her as she moved quietly trying to remain out of sight. It was a concerning mess at that, she considered heading back to inform the others but seeing as she couldn't find any enemies of any sort just yet, it didn't seem like that would accomplish much. They would come across the same scene soon enough, for now she would be better served investigating that bell.
Thus, still remaining hidden, she made her way carefully towards the temple and the source of the ringing as she tried to discover what was happening with the town.
Being nighttime, with no moon, it's not hard to remain hidden in the darkness. You move quietly over towards the temple, walking up to the southwest corner of the building. As you approach, you can more clearly see the stained glass windows, which depict images of birth, the dawning sun, trees, and unicorns, and as you work your way around to the west wall, you now find yourself standing next to the half open doorway. You don't hear anything inside over the continued ringing of the bell.
( Zyllith will first attempt to look past the doorway and peek inside the temple, checking to see if she can see anyone or anything of note. If she doesn't see anything that could be dangerous, she'll move to sneak inside and continue investigating. )
Osmord allows the flickering greens and browns of necrotic to play along his walking stick as he prepares to cast chill touch at the first sign of trouble. His detect magic spell now active he searches his surroundings for anything unusual.
"I see no people, perhaps they hide from goblins... perhaps they are dead." he mutters almost to himself.
Zyllith has slipped ahead beyond the gate, and in the dark, Arisa and Osmord cannot see where she has gone. The others see that she has walked left, and is currently standing at the edge of an open doorway on the west wall of a wooden building with a tall, slender steeple. It’s obviously a temple, and the source of the ringing bell.
As you pass through the gate, you all see a large, 3’ wide boulder that’s partially embedded in the dirt just past the right hand watchtower. up ahead, you see a couple more.
Those with darkvision can see what appears to be a large garden or small farm field that's full of wheat to the right of you. You figure that the way straight ahead probably leads to the town square.
Zyllith
Peeking around the doorway, you find your looking into a long, narrow 10’ x 20’ chamber that appears to be a bedroom, probably for the local acolyte, judging by its decor. There is a plain wooden bed along the east wall, and you can see that the mattress has been torn open and its straw pulled out. The floor is strewn with the contents of two wooden chests that appear to be priestly vestments and worthless personal effects
"Rioght, mate, totaly jacked on tha first half of the plan. Second half, not as much." Zyllith replied to Osmord's comments. After a moment she leans back to quietly ask Belkas, "Is goblin some sort'o delicacy in these parts?"
