"Ahh... Umm..." Lilly did not know what to say, actually. One thing is to suggest to look into the tunnels (have you seen them? "Dirty" does not begin to describe the horror! And anyone knows the mold can be deadly, naturally, it can cause madness as well!) - but to look into the matter by herself.... that was something very different. Then she reminded herself about new adventuring life and slowly nodded. The end goal was the dragon and skulking the tunnels could delay inevitable better prepare to the meeting.
KD has been studying the contraptions to wash feet and hands by the door, and then returns to her examination of the ray. "I wonder if this would be better aimed at the king's hands, to prevent him from harming himself. Perhaps not now. The jacket is more impressive than I thought. But I do suspect there is more going on here. Speaking to both would be helpful, if possible. But I suspect we may be hunting for whatever caused your brethren to disappear, which may also be a proximate or secondary cause of the king's madness. Could I look through your wares before we depart? Perhaps something useful to be found for our task?"She pauses.
"You have two kings? What happens if they disagree?"
Dabbledob would nod to Onu, “King Korboz has locked himself and King Gnerkli in their bedroom.” They point to the stairs at the west. “Take the stairs and your first right. Continue all the way north down the hall and you’ll arrive at their door.”
”Yes, we have two kings. What about it?” Fibblestib would respond to the artificer. “Disagreements are normally solved by vote. This isn’t a disagreement.” After a pause, he’d add. “You can go now.” There was nothing else for them to show you or anything useful in here.
”We look forward to your success to our solution.” Dabbledob would lead you to the stairway.
KD eyes the workbenches and the parts and gadgets on them, with curiosity, if not avarice, but moves on. She does not quibble with a two-person vote system to solve disputes, at least not verbally.
She turns to the others. "Are we going to see the kings?"
"Yes, let's go!"First, everything here was said and done already (Lilly was not about to even touch anything in that workshop). Second - two kings? A sight to see for sure. "North, you said?"She bravely walked forward, carefully stepping around suspicious details and mechanisms.
Onu inclines his head respectfully towards the two gnomes as they point them in the direction of the Mad Kings and moves up alongside KD, touching her lightly as he does, passing their shared signal for danger ahead.
'Yes, yes! Off to see the Kings, right away my friends.' The monk boldly strides ahead until out of sight of the workshop, then he pauses to listen carefully and scan the passageway for any clue as to what they are headed into....
Dabbledob would clarify the residents of Gnomengarde would vote, not the two kings. And if there was yet still a tie, then it was settled with Rock, Paper, Scissors. They'd also nod yes to Lilly's confirmation of north to the Kings' chamber.
Onu's thorough scout clears every twist and turn in the hallway was clear of any threats. The same old stringed lanterns lined the way. The group was free to proceed to the Kings' chamber door.
(Assuming Onu reports back to us) Hearing that there were no possible threats to them as they approached the king's chambers, Demetrios excuses himself to the front of the pack. "Good eye's, Onu. Let's go on and... help a mad king!" When everyone looked to be ready, the paladin would move on forth using the directions given by the inventors.
(Not entirely sure if anything will happen to the point of getting to the chambers, but if nothing does, Demetrios will politely knock on the door and introduce himself and explain that he and his adventurers group are seeking to help him. I can expand upon that once/if it happens!)

Knock. Knock. "Who-who's there?!" It was a commanding voice of a king trembling in fear. He'd listen closely for Demetrios' true introduction.
"Imp-imposters! Nom nom..." Some thumping and clanging could be heard. "Shapeshifters! Om nom nom! Nom nom nom nom. No-no more! Nom nom nom. Nom nom nom nom..." Shuffling from the other side could confirm pacing in front of the door. "Monster changer! Nom-nom. Nom nom nom nom! Gnome nom! Nom nomnomnomnomnomnomnom...." And it trails off in panic panting and munching noises.
Knock. Knock. "NO MORE GNOME NOM NOM!" There'd be a thump against the door. "Nom nomnomnomnomnomnomnom...." The babbling would continue in the same cycle.
Lilly put her ear to the door, listening. "I hope there are still two kings in there. I do not like those munching sounds." And practically without a pause added: "Third cousin Doderic Brockhouse (the one from Cornelia Brockhouse side) once got mad and thought he is a dog. (They later found he ate the wrong mushroom - as my grandma always said, if you are not absolutely sure what you pick, don't touch it!) So, before they could tie him up, he bit his father, two brothers, and his sister's fiancé. Almost ruined the wedding!"
"I mean, it can be very serious."She did not try to enter, though. Actually, she stepped back allowing ... more formidable folks the honor of first meeting the king(s).
KD steps forward and, staying quiet, takes out some small tools she has attached to one of her gauntlets, and begins working on the door, to pick the lock.
"Rest assured, sire, we are no imposters!"Demetrios responds back, a bit taken aback at the proclamation. "Nor are we shapeshifters. We are simply here to help with... whatever the cause of you madness is."His attention is pulled to Lilly when she speaks, gaze only flickering over to KD when she begins to work on the lock. The act hadn't settled well with him, but it would help in case they needed to spring to action for whatever reason. Then Lilly had to speak about the munching sounds and the possibility of there actually being only one king now instead of two.
"Is King Gnerkli in there? Is he okay? You haven't... eaten him have you?"

Onu does indeed report back on the results of his scout, and then steps aside to let the paladin and the artificer take over. As he hears the kings begin yammering, Onu's danger sense once again kicks in, he's nervous as a long-tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Letting the louder party members lead the conversation with the kings, Onu slips away to look for a dark nook where he can hide and offer a backstop in case anyone is following the party.
The door slowly creeks open to reveal a gnome with frazzled hair, yammering and pacing in circles. A little further into the bedroom sits another gnome, glued to a chair with a ball gag. Otherwise, he was safe and unharmed. They each wear a jagged crown and a patchwork cloak. Both look to the doorway with mixed shock on their face.
The one who you could safely assume is the king who’s gone mad, gasps. “Don’t let it in! Nomnomnomnonm.” He makes manic nations as if scarfing down cookies very messily. “Shapeshifting nomnomnom! Nom gnomes!” With being able to see the kings gestures with his words, you realize the kind has been trying to tell you something. He’s not trying to eat the gnomes, but he’s trying to warn you about what is.
At least there were still two of them. Not in the best shape but two. With the eyes wide open and full of curiosity, Lilly dared to step over the threshold even a tiny bit ahead of Demetrios.
"Um... Your majesties? Greetings." She tried to make a curtsy that did not exactly work with the adventuring clothes and a backpack, but the situation was crazy enough anyway. "We came to help with whatever problem you have here. Your ... subjects told us about disappearing gnomes. We want to help." Lilly smiled as charming as she could.
"What did the shapeshifters appear as, your majesty? And why is he gagged?"KD says.
She points at the bound and gagged king, touching a copper wire that she has attached to an earring of hers, casting message and says, "We are here to help, what is going on? You can reply to me this way"
The Mad King would pause when the smaller one would step foward. He’d stop nomming enough to look at her with clarity, his head tilting slightly with a hint of a smile growing. Then when the other would ask her pair of questions, the King’s eyes would ping wide. “Nom noms anything! Nom noms Shapeshifters! Nom nom nom nom. Anything. Anything! ANYTHING!” He’d stride up to the artificer and invade her personal space. “Gagged gnome cant nom nom gnome! Nom nom nom nom!” He’d throw his arms about as if it’s simply obvious.

Onu hears the babbling spilling out from the room and keys in on the 'shapeshifter' repeated multiple times. Realizing that hiding from a shapeshifter is neither helpful nor prudent, he steps out of the shadows and closes the gap to the back of the party. A quick, deliberate scan of each and every member of the party he came in with to memorize as many details about them as possible. A game they used to play at ..... well, better not to dwell on where he learned these skills, but Kip's Game taught him well. (investigation? 9). Or at least, Onu felt confident in his abilities :)
Once he felt he could spot a shapeshifter in their midst going forward, Onu stepped into the room, placing his back against the wall and watching the two kings closely....
