Onu has fallen back to cover the party's backtrail, blade out and ready, he's continuously poking anything he sees that looks like it'e even remotely large enough to be the shapeshifter
(Yes, I understand :) But again, if there's no actual interaction with the string, there's still no change throughout the process.)
Lilly hooks her sturdy ladle onto the handle and pulls. It takes a little bit of effort to get it started, but once there was momentum, she'd be able to open it as wide as she preferred.
Inside would reveal a large room filled with heaps of mechanical components, loose gears, twisted bits of metal, and other scraps that the gnomes use to cobble together new inventions. The warmth of the lantern lights bounces off the rolling hills of all the different metals. Beneath the lanterns there were a jumble of nonfunctional gnomish gizmos hung up all over the walls. They were probably early prototypes on display. Essentially, this was a tinkerer's dream hoard.
This was the Treasury (G13).
The string still rested on the floor, unchanged. Though now, your eyes can follow it over a small hump of rusty spoons and disappear into a pile of large gears at the centre of the room.
That... was a lot of potential targets. "Well, looks like we got our work cut out for us," noted Lilly stoically, carefully entered the room, and began to probe things around with the ladle. She did not (and could not) hit anything hard with her "weapon" but hoped it will be enough for "shapeshifter" to reveal itself.
KD says "it could be here laying in wait, so be ready to strike, everyone..."
She also readies a fire bolt as she steps back toward the door, still tender from the fall outside, and wondering if there is a threat here.
If still no movement or noise, she uses Magical Tinkering to illuminate the thread:
To use this ability, you must have thieves’ tools or artisan’s tools in hand. You then touch a Tiny nonmagical object as an action and give it one of the following magical properties of your choice:
The object sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius and dim light for an additional 5 feet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Onu would continue to hold position at the back of the party, covering their backtrail against the chance that they missed the shapeshifter on their way into the treasure room and it was preparing to ambush them from behind.
Demetrios can't help but frown upon the scene before them. There were simply too many things in the room! There would be no way they could search through everything to ensure this room was or was not clear. "Let me try something..."
The paladin moves to the center of the room (or as centered he could get), and slides his eyes shut. He takes in a deep breath and exhales slowly...
(Not sure if this would help us at all, but might as well try a Divine Sense)
The presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity (the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell.

Lilly bravely walks in and begins methodically poking through some piles clockwise around the room. This could take some time.
Onu keeps a diligent watch on the groups rear. With anticipation building for the shapeshifter to reveal itself, thick silence hung through the air, with the exception of the occasional hollow ring from Lilly’s ladle poking.
Eventually KD would calm her stance and decide to illuminate the thread. It does light up, quite beautifully actually. The glow would follow the thread into a pile with the occasional piece of the strand poking out from some pieces, but other than that, nothing happens.
Demetrios steps forward to try adding a method of search of his own. As he closes his eyes and breathes, there are no angelic songs ringing in his ears or anything noxious wafting into his nose, but something nagged at him anyway. There was magic here (besides KDs glow), just nothing that tipped the balance of divinity that would allow him to pinpoint it.
KD pulled on the illuminated thread. There was no real resistance besides any parts or components that may have rested on it. She'd be able to pull it to her, but not without a few gizmos and gadgets tumbling down the pile. Some light clings and clangs could be heard. It appeared like it became wrapped around something and kind of pulled it out. Eventually the end of the string would come to her revealing a frayed end. The artificer would be able to hear light ticking and whirring coming from the exposed portion of the pile.
(Does Lilly keep poking around some piles? Does Demetrios still keep his divine sense up? There's still time for other's to investigate. I just wanted to update while I could this evening.)
Demetrios' lips thin at the result of his divine sense pinging nothing of interest. Could he trust if the menace was here or not? But there is something here, just not what he was really looking for... He decides to look for it by keeping his senses up, though keeping himself arms reach from anything particularly suspicious (and poking things with the tip of his blade, carefully though, as to not scratch anything important).

KD uses the thread to help the investigation, leaving it amid the pile to eliminate shadows and reveal movement. She looks at where the ticking and whirring sound comes from, wary of something dangerous but also curious.
Onu also offers to [action] Help [/help] as Lily and Demetrio's lead the investigation into the pile of gears and widgets.
He keeps his blade out and his eyes open - his outward demeanor cool and collected, while his internal monologue is stuck on a loop of fear and pending doom.
Taking a close peek, KD discovers a copper amulet containing tiny interlocking gears sitting atop the revealed pile. At the same time Demetrios would carefully sift through a pile close by with the tip of his sword. As he poked and prodded, some things felt hollow or of standard quality, but then his blade would graze against something else. Shifting a few small scraps aside, the paladin would reveal a shiny 1 foot long rod.
All the while, Lilly continues her methodical probing with her ladle. She’d poke a little on the outside piles, then pivot to work the inside piles. Having started at approximately 9oclock, she had worked her way around the centre of the room to about 1oclock. Casually, the halfling sifts through, poking around her current section without much concern. Poke. Poke. Poke. Sift. Sift. Sift. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Poke. Poke. Huh? Her ladle would slip out of her hand. No wait… It got stuck. That’s when Onu would step in to pause Lilly from reaching to try her ladle again.
Some gears would wiggle, then a whirring sound would snort? And then it slowly started coming together. This was not a random pile. What appeared to be assorted parts, were actually a make up of a visage! It looked confused, disoriented even. Was that a mouth? Did it just yawn and smack it’s lips? Lilly’s ladle hung to what looked like drool on the face… And what looked to be eyes, would start to open. After a couple flutters, they’d ping open, staring back in surprise. Buuu-huh?!

At Demetrios' exclamation, the figure began to rise from the pile. Clings. Tings. Clangs and bangs. A mechanical grandfather clock emerges with style.
