Durnham watches the fire from Resyss burn into the carpet and winces as his bolt is reflected off some rubble. He then continues to cast his fire bolt cantrip at the rug hoping to burn it up. “It’s possible we are wasting our time here but at the very least we are getting rid of something very dangerous for anyone else.”
I’m not sure if you want us to keep rolling or just assume that Resyss and Durnham eventually cast enough fire at it to destroy it. I’m ok either way.
Qidira watches hiding her inward dismay at something so magnificent having to be destroyed. It was, of course, the right thing to do. Such amazing craftsmanship used to ill intentions. The Zombies, the Frigid Woe, and deadly carpets. Who lived here? Their whole cause seemed to be death and destruction. She suddenly gets a thought, "I thought maybe this was a place of study, perhaps weaponizing chemicals for war. They did end up falling from the sky. But maybe this is a weird laboratory?"
I was going to see if you persisted, but if that's your plan then we'll skip to the end lol
Under the relentless bombardment, the rug eventually succumbs and lies in charred fragments on the floor. As the embers are brushed away they reveal a small trapdoor hidden in the floor, about one foot square. The door is varnished wood with a small keyhole in the centre.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Brandon continues to send blasts of eldritch energy toward the pinned rug, alternating with Durnham’s blasts of flame, until the rug is torn away to reveal the hidden door. “Aha! You were right, Durnham, it was guarding something!” He slaps the dwarf on the back and drops down to his knees to inspect the door and keyhole. Looking for any signs of a trap or any markings, including the writing and scratches they saw in earlier rooms. “What do you think is in it? Can we open it without the key?”
Durnham smiles at Brandon “It was a reasonable deduction. Something like that rug wouldn’t be left randomly about. It’s too dangerous for that.” He looks around at the group and says, “I’d like to know what’s in there. Do any of you have skills with opening locks?” He looks more pointedly at Qidira.
Again the pressure to learn, discover, and know returns. The excitement of being in the ruins, the dangers of the journey, the news of his parents and the emotions that brought forward, and even the importance of their mission had all been pressing on Durnham’s mind. But underneath it all, the hunger for knowledge persisted. This was his element, what he enjoyed most in life! He felt more alive then ever before as they searched for lost knowledge, learned new skills, found what was lost to the past, and hopefully… someday soon, to see ahead and know what needed to be done next, to better prepare for the unknowns ahead…
Ressys stood at the corner of hallway keeping a watch but the sounds from the room caught his attention. He returned back to the room to see the charred remains of the rug.
"What did the poor carpeting in this room do?"
Seeing the trap door revealed he also looks to Qidira. "Yes, your special skills seem useful here unless someone has found a key. If we cannot get in if we do come across w key we'll certainly know where to try it."
Brandon inspects the trapdoor and lock; they seem relatively mundane given the surroundings, at least enough for a skilled thief to attempt to force access with their tools. He sees no sign of traps.
Qidira slips forward quickly inspecting the lock, curious to see what lies below it.
Plopping down on her belly to get a better look at it, she pulls out a cloth and unrolls a set of very well used tools. Leaning up on her elbows and with a few odd expressions as she concentrates on the work attempting to release the lock. Lockpicking attempt 18
"...and I think that does it?" She says trying to release the mechanism.
Brandon watches Qidira’s work with interest and offers some encouragement as it appears the lock mechanism is released. “Nicely done! Now let’s see what this rug was so eager to protect. It’s too narrow to be a tunnel, probably just a small enclosure” Brandon attempts to open the trapdoor and looks to see what is hidden in the compartment below.
As Qidira fiddles with the lock Durnham wanders about the rubble and uses his eyes and magical detection to look for anything else that might be buried or covered by the debris.
As the locking mechanism clicks to release, she rolls out of the way to the left and rises to her feet. "There! I'll leave opening it to you." Returning to watch the exit and the general area for any dangers that may present themselves, crossbow in hand.
Qidira's efforts with the lock are rewarded with a satisfying 'click' as the trapdoor pops ajar. Brandon takes a look inside and finds that the door concealed a small alcove, one foot wide and deep but two or three feet long. Resting inside is a piece of fine black velvet, which turns out to contain a beautiful wand with a blue jagged head.
Durnham is unable to find anything else in the rubble, quite sure that he has checked every nook and cranny. As soon as the wand is unveiled, he sees it glowing with the distinctive red glow of evocation magic.

Qidira looks in amazement at the beautiful wand. "Durnham, would you do that trick you do with the hand and hold it up so that I might study it a moment?"
If Durnham is willing to share his skill with mage hand Qidira with inspect the wand from every angle suspecting the jagged blue is an indication of lightning or at least electricity but looks for other markers to give away its purpose. history17 @DM

The professor nods and quickly summons the mage hand to pick up the wand for Qidira. “It holds a spell of evocation. I don’t know the spell for identifying magical items yet but evocation is usually the magic of destruction. It is likely ok to touch but better to be safe than sorry. It must be powerful to have been hidden and secured so well…” Durnham is eager to get his hands on the wand.
Brandon pulls out the piece of velvet with care, gasping in surprise as it uncovers the wand. Their first Aeorian artifact. As the mage hand holds the wand for further inspection, Brandon picks up his gear and prepares to leave the room.
“That is a nice find, Durnham, do you think you will be able to make use of it?”he glances around the rubble of the room “looks like that is all we will find here. Let’s check out the other rooms. We still have an antidote to find.” Brandon moves out toward the hall to join Ressys and prepare for the next room.
Qidira will share anything she is able to determine about the wand, if anything, then provided she discovers nothing obviously harmful to its user encourages Durnham take possession. "A brilliant find! Durnham, maybe like my ring you'll discover its true purpose through possession." Then seeing Brandon making for the exit, straightens her gear and marches along behind him.
Qidira examines the wand and uses her artificer's knowledge to divine some lore from it (sharing as instructed by Qidira):
The head piece of the wand is carved into a shape thought to be common among warcasters of Aeor. Such wands were referenced in one text that Qidira saw in her elf friend's study, which talked of arcane missiles being launched from them.
Out in the corridor there is still no noise or sign of activity behind any of the other doors.
(Bringing map forward; you have cleared rooms 1, 5 and 6 so far):
“You have heard of wands like this Qidira? That’s very interesting. Your knowledge of devices is profound.”
Durnham takes the wand and puts it into his backpack. “I’ll study this when we get some time to rest. It sounds like a useful wand for combat but I will need some time with it to attune to it and fully understand it.” He smiles with pride. He had done it! He has ventured into the ruins like his Uncle and has been a meaningful part of a successful expedition. Even though the job wasn’t done yet, he already felt like they had been successful. An actual authentic relic from the past was theirs! His mind began spinning with thoughts of what else they could find and learn.
After a moment he notices that the others had already left the room and he pulled his mind out of its wandering to follow them down the hallway.
Qidira grins then quietly responds, "Thank you! All these bits of knowledge locked away in my head and I've finally found a purpose for them."
She slips forward with the others along the hall and quietly approaches the door to 2. Surveying the doorway for traps, then pressing an ear to listen to whatever may be within. perception23

Brandon follows Qidira down the hallway to the next room and looks on as she inspects the door. As she works, he looks back at their guide “Orvo, is this unusual? Have you encountered Aeorian undead in any of your previous expeditions?”
Once she gives the all clear that it is unlocked and it is safe to open the door, he looks at Kotar and the others, nods, and pushes the door open. He looks into the room, hand gripping his longsword, trying to determine the contents of the room and alert for any threats.
