“Aye, We have work to do” Brandon echoes Ressys as the party prepares to leave the room. “Perhaps Elro has some idea of where Urgon traveled in Eiselcross, or can point us to a promising lead among the ship captains in port. He may also help us book passage.”
“Time is short, but we should rest and restock equipment before we leave.” he glances at Ressys “and give you time to prepare your healing magics. I know little of Eiselcross, but I fear our path ahead is long and dangerous.”
After collecting the contents into the sack, Durnham looks at the scared family and tried to think of a way to give them hope. He looks to the two men and smiles saying “Don’t lose hope. The illness takes time to run it’s course. We have 2-3 weeks or more to find the cure. We... we will do our best for you and the children.”
With that he will carefully haul the downstairs. He looks at the fireplace and thinks about burning it in there but thinks better of it and waits to find somewhere outdoors and more ventilated to burn the sack. He approaches Arl and asks “Listen, the merchant family have been exposed to spores which have made some sick... like my Uncle. It isn’t contagious and we have cleaned out any trace of it from the inn and their room. Don’t worry if you hear of the family getting sick. Everyone else is safe unless they’ve been very close to the little girls or their make up. Elro has asked us to find a cure for this disease so if you have any questions, he can fill you in.”
He then adds, ”Also, I owe you for the stew, the ale, the cloth, and this sack, how much is the tab?”
Qidira hears all that is said and knows that the children must be very scared. She moves over to them, looks them in the eye being very serious and gives her best smile. "Those toys are very precious to me and need regular oiling. Here is the oil for you to use. I'm trusting you to take good care of them, unless your fathers or other grown-ups tell you different. You must oil them every day. I will see you both soon." She give them each a gentle hug and turns to the fathers, giving them a firm nod that she means what she says and darts out the door feeling tears of worry start to sting her eyes.
Irven takes in your instructions without saying anything – he looks like he has taken all he can for now. Fenton is barely doing any better, but seems to acknowledge your words.
When Qidira offers the girls her mechanical bird and music box, Honor breaks free of her father’s embrace and runs over to hold the little gnome tight; they are almost the same size. Magic follows suit, first hugging the giant legs of Kotar and Ressys before throwing herself into a bug hug with Durnham.
After a long hug, the girls return to their fathers and the four resume their group embrace, allowing you to leave them to console each other. As the last of you leaves the room, the music box lets out a single chime from within Honor’s grasp.
Downstairs, Arl meets the news with subdued surprise, as if he has faced his own share of deadly situations in the past: “Spores eh? Well thanks for clearing up the mess that wasn’t yours to clean, and looking after the Liels. They’re good people...seems to be a few of those around these days”
He says this last comment with a glint in his eye, taking you in as if anew.
Then: “Your little friend already paid a good sum; just four silver left to pay. I would write it off, but if what you say is true then I’m going to be caring for some pretty sick guests soon – can't kick people like that into the street”
Qidira leans towards the other group members and whispers so as not to interrupt their discussion with Arl. "I need to dash over to the traders to see about warmer gear. What I have is barely sufficient for here, and not likely good for ship travel. I should be back shortly." She steps out, the fresh air helpful in settling the emotions churning within her gut, worry about the girls sitting heavy in her heart. Looking quickly for a shop that would carry the clothing she desires.
Durnham replies to Arl and gives him 5 silver. “Thank you Arl. We will do our best to find a cure. Please help out the family however you can. I’m sure Elro will support you.”
He then nods to his friends and heads outside saying “We have plans to make. Let’s discuss it outside.”
A sad smile took hold of his lips when the tiefling girls hugged his leg. By this time Kotar was used to people feeling intimidated by his size, keeping their distance. I won’t let you down, little one, he thought as a wave of determination surged through his body.
While the others explained the situation to Arl and paid what was owed to the innkeeper, the goliath started planning his next steps. He had armor to resize and some healing potion would be good too. Oh, yes, they don’t sell it here, he remembered as they left the tavern.
“Should we go back to Pelc’s? See if Elro is there and tell him what happened.” It was more likely that the Glassblade returned to base to treat his wounds, but Kotar had no idea where his base would be. “Also, Durnham, if it’s alright with you I would like to try exchanging the splint armor with Elro. Maybe he has one that fit me. If he does not, I would like to search a smithy and get it resized.” Hopefully fast. He was not sure about what would be their next step, but was sure they didn’t need much time to spare. “Oh, we still have to share some coin, right?”
Durnham looks up at Kotar... the feel of the little girl’s arms still around him and on his mind. “Splint armor? Oh... yes my Uncle’s armor. Yes feel free to exchange or resize it as you see fit. It’s of no use to me.”
He waits outside until the others gather together and then speaks up, “Earlier, I didn’t think a few minutes were going to make a difference... and now I’m not sure. A few minutes could be all the difference for those girls.” He shakes his head sadly before continuing, “We need to know where to go next. Likely Eiselcross but where in Eiselcross? We could be lost for months aimlessly wandering that place and never know what we’re looking for or where to look for it. We need information.”There it is again he thinks to himself. I am always held back by a lack of knowledge or information.
“I think we should split up. We have a few possible places to check for clues and splitting up will get us answers faster.” He holds up a hand and ticks his fingers back as he speaks “We should speak with Elro about Urgon’s travels, Pelc’s could be investigated further, Tulgi and her wolves could be checked on, the priests could be consulted... and they may have healing potions or services for sale, My Uncle may have left notes or clues at his cabin, and a few of us have need of supplies before we set out.” He looks to the sky trying to judge the time of day. “This is going to be an expedition and it may take some time to prepare but I worry about getting back in time...”
Arl accepts the money from Ressys gratefully “This will help immensely, thank you Winterwalker”
He is equally gracious for the coins that Durnham slides across the counter, holding them up in a salute before dropping them into his money box. He waves you off and starts to prepare a snack for the Liels, probably just to be able to do something to help.
The party gathers outside to discuss their next steps. It is approaching midday; the early morning excursion to Coraker Cave, the rush to Pelc’s and then a rest at the Jolly Dwarf have all taken place in a single morning.
You are almost in the centre of Palebank, bustling with as much activity as a remote frozen village can muster. Its unorthodox layout means there is no high street as such, and all the merchants and taverns are blended in with the residential properties.
The Glassblades’ barracks, a large hut really, is a relatively short walk south west, sited on the edge of town in case of intrusion by raiders or, equally likely, dangerous wildlife.
To the north is the docks, humming with activity now as fishing boats come and go, as well as exploration vessels. The twin temples of Moradin and Corellon are close to the docks, often serving as a sailor’s last stop before embarking on another voyage.
Ressys steps outside and turns to the others as they gather together. "We received 100 gold pieces from Tulgi to purchase what we may need for the trek. I do not know if we need to book passage on a ship or get a dog sled or anything else of any expense. I can split the money now or keep it together for larger purchases. The Liel's offered to help and I hope that Elro will be able to aid us as well."
"I intend to seek Elro and see what he knew of Urgon's travels and what he may know of the Aeroian on Eiselcross. The temples of Moradin and Corellon may have potions of healing for sale. My ability to do such healing is limited and having other means would be helpful. I agree with Durnham that at least Pelc's and his uncles places should be searched better. I am less concerned with Tulgi."
"For my part I am going to seek Elro. I can see no reason why we cannot split up and ultimatley return to Urgon's, well actually Durnham's now, cabin."
Seeing the wisdom in Ressy’s plan, Durnham nods. “I think we should all go see Elro. It may be that he can help fund our trip. We need supplies and I hadn’t considered passage on a vessel. After that we can do any further investigating needed.”
He sighs and looks to Kotar and Ressys, “Will you two guide us on this trip? I am out of my depth here and don’t even know what we need for this kind of journey.”
Brandon considers the options laid out by the group. “For my part, Tulgi and Pelc’s have no interest to me, and we searched the cabin pretty thoroughly when we stayed last night. It may still hold secrets, but we are not sure what else to look for.”
He pauses “If we are splitting up, I will head to the harbor and ask around. I will see what options are there for us to book passage. Perhaps if luck is with us, I can find the ship that carried Urgon and find out more about his destination. We can cover more ground and I will share what I learn, if anything”
He looks at the group and shrugs “If you think it is best we remain together, I will accompany you to Elro and find out what more he has to say.”
"Chance, or fate, has brought us together. I will help guide us. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to spend some time and learn more of Eiselcross from Kotar. I have never been. But I cannot imagine that the harsh world on Eiselcross is much different from the harsh northern reaches of the Greying Wildlands. We will need cold weather gear if you don't already have any. Extra rations for sure as well."
"Let us find Elro. We have much to discuss with him. Hopefully no one is trying to kill him again."
Qidira ponders all that is discussed. "I need warm weather gear but could perhaps make use of some of Urgon's old clothes if Durnham will allow? Though he was of a stockier build likely, some things might fit? If that's not disrespectful Durnham? " She pauses a little apologetically hoping he doesn't find her request offensive. "If you, Durnham, would be willing, we could head back to the cabin and take one more look about? I can leave my share with the others for now to help with the cost split for travel and possible other supplies needed? I've never traveled by boat before. We could meet either at the inn or the docks in a couple of hours?"
Durnham nods to Qidira, “you can use anything that Urgon left behind. But let’s go together to meet Elro, he may have a better of idea where we need to go and what we may need. We can separate from there as we will have a better idea of what to get.”
Durnham leads the way to the Glassblades’ barracks, trudging south west through snow which is mostly trampled at first, but increasingly fresh as you get further from town. By the time you reach the barracks you are walking in the footsteps of two humanoids who appear to have entered via the front door.
The barracks is a large hut, with the front door leading in to a small reception area with a desk and two chairs. A door leads from here into the main interior, which through the window looks like a collection of bunk beds and foot lockers.
Elro is sat at the chair behind the desk, inspecting a dressing strapped to his chest. As you enter he smiles, goes to stand, then drops back to the chair, wincing. He holds his hands up in apology for having to sit.
“I’m going to be on light duties for the rest of the day, but it would have been much lighter without your intervention at Pelc’s. Mila is out seeing to Croaker Cave and arranging a message to Uthodurn while I try to see what I can find in our records about this Frigid Woe”
He indicates a large leather-bound book laying open on the desk: “But it’s not a lot I’m afraid. It says here that poisons from Eiselcross have so far not been cured by any spell or medication known in Wildemount. But first things first; please tell me the Liels are OK and the second vial recovered”

"Use this to care for them." he says with determination. "We will return. Now we must find Elro and discuss our next plans."
