Ressys stays quiet as the others start a discussion on belief and superstition. He does not get involved, what others think or believe matters little to him.
As Bennar speaks he nods in agreement.
"If we are settled here then we will return in the morning. We have more supplies we need to find."
“Thank you, Bennar” Brandon thanks the smith again “I have not seen such fine steel since the armories of the Empire, and even then only rarely.” He watches and waits as the others don their armor and make their last exchanges. He eyes the Goliath’s glaive “A fine weapon, for a strong warrior. You will wield it well, Kotar”
He listens in silence as Kotar and Durnham debate the finer points of superstition. He was not normally a superstitious person, but these last few months have blurred the line between what is whispered in bedtime stories and what is real for him. He knew very little of Goliaths, having only met Kotar during the journey from Uthodurn and even then their few conversations focused on swordplay and Eiselcross. Still, he gets the feeling that not all Goliaths are like Kotar. But then again, isn’t that true of everyone?
He looks up as Ressys encourages the party to continue on. “Yes, Winterwalker, you are right”Brandon agrees “we have some more shopping to do before our journey.” Another race that Brandon never saw before this trip to the north, and one wise in the ways of nature. He has much to learn during this journey, and that doesn't even include all he can learn from Durnham and Qidira.
“Thank you again Bennar.” Durnham turns towards his friends “if your business is done we can head down towards the docks and Esta’s shop. It’s more of a general store.”
Qidira smiles at Kotar's comment eager to help. This is the richest she's felt in her life.
As Durnham speaks on superstitions and traditions, she remembered a song she'd overheard from common children. "Ring around the Rosies" came to mind which sounded a happy enough tune but spoke of how to identify victims of a plague. This simple song must have started to help children remember to stay away.
"Esta you say? We'll ask around at the docks. We're likely headed there next." She says to Bennar gratefully. "Thank you for your help." If Bennar offers her spares for her daggers or shortsword, she'll gratefully accept, otherwise will only leave the shortsword and two of the daggers for behind for sharpening to be picked up tomorrow, worried about further conflicts.
She raises the hood of her cloak against the pending cold and heads out with the others into the snowy weather.
You leave Bennar behind and head towards Esta’s shop, Qidira sheathing her loaned short sword into the scabbard vacated by the blade left behind for sharpening.
Durnham leads you through town as the afternoon passes on. There is still a bustle but it has slowed a little and your bellies start to rumble as you realise that dining plans might be a good idea at some point.
You arrive at Esta’s to see that it is not so much a shop, as a house with a large un-shuttered window dominating the front wall. Esta stands inside the house taking orders or inspiration requests from customers, then potters around inside the house to find the best match – or a pleasant surprise – for them.
As you reach Esta’s house, the middle-aged elf with a long black braid is already helping someone; a dwarf lady with blonde hair poking out erratically from under a woolen cap.
“Well Dingar, if you’re looking for a good pickling jar then I have a lovely set of three glass ones with cork stoppers” says Esta, disappearing from view and clattering around inside the front room. She soon emerges, triumphantly offering three glass jars to the lady across the windowsill.
“Oh my, yes they’re perfect. Thank you!” exclaims the dwarf, handing over some coins.
You notice that no price was discussed, and Durnham remembers that Esta runs an honesty system; you pay what you think something is worth. While the system might seem open to abuse by the unscrupulous, repeat visitors who lack integrity soon find that the items they are looking for never seen to turn up...
As Dingar strides off happily, Esta looks up and down the street with a contended smile. She looks for all the world like a person who is absolutely, humbly, in love with her life.
"Hello Esta," Durnham greets her in Elvish as he approaches. "May the sun shine upon you today," A common if somewhat formal greeting in Elvish. He does not wait for the response, however, as he continues on in common.
"My friends and I here are in desparate need... and I can't even be sure what we need." He frowns before continuing and leans in closer so as not to be overheard by other shoppers, "Elro has asked us to look into the sickness that took my Uncle..." he pauses at a sudden lump in his throat and swallows in anger to clear it. "It... it has infected others... it's not a contaigous disease but one that came back from something Urgon was exposed to... we have to follow his trail to Eisselcross to find a cure. There's a merchant with a family and... well we have to help them... we need tents and gear to travel to Eisselcross... and we leave in the morning."
He looks hopefully at her and asks in Elvish "Can you help us? Folk must come to you for supplies on their trip to Eisselcross?"
“Tell me about it.” He answered Durnham while finishing the donning of the armor. His mind entirely focused on the culture subject. “I think we’ll need a to do research in a library, maybe compare practices of survival specialists.”
He would have continued where it not for Bennar’s interruption. The blacksmith was right. That was hardly the place or the time for such dialogue. Ressys was the next to speak, suggesting the group to move. To that Kotar answered taking his backpack and nodding.
“Thank you.”The goliath spoked to Brandon, a little bit unsure about how to answer. After that they followed to their next stop. Esta’s shop was little bit more than a house, it’s front almost entirely made up out of a huge window. Durnham was the first to break the silence, asking what supplies the elven woman had.
“A big tent to fit four of us would be enough - one should always be on guard.” He said dividing his attention between wizard and shopkeeper. “And I have to admit that we don’t have snowshoes or dried food. Healing would be good too.”
For the latter Kotar didn’t have much hope. The entire incident with Elro had taught him better. Still it could be worth a try.
Qidira steps forward looking at the happy elf with a brilliant smile but a very red, cold face. "Very warm clothes would be nice indeed too." Then glancing around her shop at what she can see, "I don't suppose you'd have any tinkering supplies? Old broken gadgets? Wire? Small hooks? Little bits of anything really. Thread, needles, glue and oil! We definitely need oil." Then stops quickly. Still peering into the shop at all of the wonderous things she would like to get her hands on. Hopping up and down a couple of times looking at lower items. Then to explain a little and toning her enthusiasm down a bit she pulls the remaining gadget she possesses out of her pocket and shows it to the woman. Lighting up the little lighter with a flick of her thumb though it takes a couple of tries as she hasn't tended to it as she should. "I like to make, fix and mend things. Anything really."
Esta looks pleasantly surprised at the young wizard’s appearance “Durnham! Sun shine upon you too”
She speaks in Common as she gives a slightly less formal response to his greeting, picking up on the cue given by her new arrival.
“Oh my, this sickness sounds dreadful. Eiselcross? That’s incredibly brave of you. All of you, although the big one looks like he might be well adapted and – oh – Winterwalker! Elro has entrusted us to a fine party indeed. Let me see what I have back here...”
Esta disappears for a minute as she clatters through boxes and cupboards. When she reappears, she is carrying two canvas bags roughly three feet long and eight inches in diameter: “Tents to take two people each, I have a third if you need it?”
The elf also produces some sets of wide circular footwear, wooden frames with catgut strings: “Snow shoes to keep your pace up across the frozen islands, and these...”, she winks at little Qidira with a motherly glow, “cold weather coats and leggings to keep the ice at bay”
Esta lifts a wooden crate onto the windowsill, it is about eighteen inches to a side and eight inches tall: “I have this tray of bits and bobs, might be interesting to a skilled tinkerer such as yourself dear. Those little fingers could fashion a few gadgets form these no doubt, there’s oil and sewing kit in there too”
Proudly displaying all the goods offered so far, her smile drops a fraction as she says “No food though, not travelling food at least. But I have a nice fruit cake you can take for the journey, no payment needed for that”
“Good day, my lady. I believe we will take that third tent as well”Brandon steps up to the window. Turning to his companions “Better safe than sorry, right?” Turning back, he resumes his conversation with Esta “I too am in need of cold weather gear, snowshoes, and perhaps some fishing tackle if it can be spared.” Brandon slides 17 gp across the windowsill and smiles “I hope this will cover that list. Let us know what we owe for the rest. You have a remarkable shop, everything someone could need”
He turns to Durnham “It is too bad about the rations. I have enough for ten days. Maybe we could pick some up more at the inn?”
Ressys smiles at the recognition given by Esta. "May your path be ever clear." He greets her.
"My needs are simple Esta. A hooded Lantern with five flasks of oil, a tinderbox and a healer's kit if you have one please. I see you have the tents and snowshoes already."
“Yes, we will need to find rations for sure. I don’t have any myself,” he nods to Brandon.
Durnham returns to Esta, “Thank you, I will take one of those tents, and some snowshoes.” He reaches into a pouch and pulls out 4 gold pieces and hands it to her.
”I also need a few odd items. I don’t suppose you have a supply of incense, herbs, and charcoal, maybe some gemstones? As far as rations for travel, where would you suggest we go for those?”
Qidira looks happily on as the three tents are purchased then the snowshoes. Her eyes brightening seeing the cold weather coats and leggings, reaching for those items intended for her. Then as the tray comes out, a yet happier grin comes out. Realizing the expense is likely more than she can bear, she pulls out her pouch, dumping the contents on the counter. 43 gp and 10 sp pour out. She looks at her coin, then at the pile of treasures and carefully pulls 5 silver back. "For some other expenses." She says of the retrieved 5 sp. "How much of that can I buy for this? I need a healing kit and to pay my share for these clothes too and definitely interested in the fruit cake. It's been ages since I've bit into one of those." Looking up hopefully at the generous elf. Guiltily playing the pity her 8 Charisma sometimes provides her.(43g and 5 sp remain on the counter)
“Oh no, that seems a fair price my sweet”says Esta as Brandon hands over the gold. She reaches up to a shelf above the window and brings down a reel of line with a small tin marked ‘Hooks’.
“No rod, but line and hooks if that’s of any use? I can usually find something for most people, but those who don’t find what they need often find something they want”
Turning her head to meet Ressys again, she nods once quickly and dashes through a door in the back of the room. She is gone for about a minute before coming back with the items requested by the big druid “I really should keep the more popular stuff nearer the front, but then my talent is acquiring and sharing it, not organizing it!”
She slides the lantern, oil, tinderbox and healer’s kit across to Ressys and politely waits for his payment.
When Durnham inquires about herbs, incense and gems, Esta’s smile dims slightly. “Nothing so rare as gemstones, unless you want costume jewelry? Incense, a little – herbs, plenty”
Seeing Qidira counting out the entirety of her funds and then taking back a meagre amount, Esta places a healer’s kit on the sill and pushes it forward, sweeping up half the coins before it until kit and coins all sit in front of the little gnome. She beams her warm smile and says nothing.
Ressys watches how Esta treats Qidira and smiles. He places 30 gold pieces onto the counter and takes his items. The flasks of oil and Healer's kit go into his large bag, the Lantern hooks to the bag. In elvish he speaks to her
"You do a kindness, always the mother to those in need. You are a rare one Esta. May the blessings of Melora ever reach you and yours."
If Qidira seems to balk or hesitate at the coins left for her before she can say anything he says in common.
"Come Qidira, gather your coins and items. We have more preparations to make. We must find at least some rations to take with us. I can provide the essentials if needed out in the wild but best we are prepared for all circumstances that we can."
Qidira looks confused briefly as Esta only takes half of the funds, then wipes the confusion off of her face. "Thank you!" She said cheerfully scooping everything up before the woman realizes her extreme generosity as the contents of the tray were easily worth what she offered. Then, "Is there anything that YOU need Esta? I will happily keep my eyes wide for it, should there be."
He smiles and pulls out 10 gold. “Is there enough incense, charcoal, and herbs for this?”
“And no, costume jewelry won’t cut it. I need a real diamond, though a small one. Spells have exacting component requirements.” He shrugs “It’s ok that you don’t have it, I don’t really have the total amount in coin to pay for it anyway. I was going to see if there was some other way of getting the coin or trade for it.”
”Do you know where I could find such a gem in town? Oh and rations... where do folks go for travel rations?”
An idea strikes Qidira. "Might I look for moment at the costume jewelry?" Remembering a hidden gem in a pile of an 'associate's' fake jewelry hoard. Should Esta present them to her, she will sort through as if looking for more baubles and trinkets for tinkering, quickly appraising to see if any such are in her collection.
