Durnham places the incense, charcoal, and herbs into his backpack. “I think I’m good aside from more rations,” he says to Brandon.
He then returns to Esta, “Thank you, and blessings upon your house,” in Elvish.
He then turns towards his companions “I have a favor to ask. I know we are stretched thin but I have a spell that I haven’t been able to use because it requires a small diamond. I’m about 14 gold short of the 50 it would cost.” He hesitates before continuing, “I don’t like being a burden but if you could spot me the 14 gold and enough for rations... I would repay you in the future out of my share of anything we find. It would be beneficial for us all, it allows me to cast a damaging orb of elemental energy... energy that I can change to suit the element we need.”
Qidira looks over the costume jewelry and not sure what she's looking at without more study, passes Esta 10 gp, reaching for the box. "Is this enough for the lot? There might be some things in here that would work as decoration for a couple of projects I'm working on." Then feeling the weight of her pack, decides to avert her eyes from any other potential purchases.

Going to add a couple of containers on my character sheet - Tinker stuff and Jeweler's box or something. If she agrees to the price. Garage sale bargain hunting DnD style. With the difference that she actually has some skill. Then as she pulls items out and figures them out - will note the item in the container.
@Durnham Qidira smiles at your question and nods passing him 10 gold. I might be able to give you more soon, but for now...
Brandon passes Durnham 10 gold pieces as well. “What is mine is also yours, I have all I need for now. I can spare more if necessary. If this spell aids us while we search for the cure, all the better.”
"As for rations, I can provide a small berry called goodberries. They will feed one for a day and I can make ten at a time. They also offer a small amount of Healing. It's best we have rations with us but rest assured we will not go hungry. But my power is limited so let's be prepared" Ressys says.
“Thank you Brandon, Qidira,” he looks to both with gratitude in his face, “This is very generous of you both and I hope to repay you soon.” He places the coin in his pouch and then suggests “Well, I need to go to see this jeweler named Thorak, If anyone would like to join me.”
”I suggest we see the quartermaster in the morning before we set sail for rations, unless someone wants to go secure rations now, the docks are nearby....”
"Thank you Ressys, that will be a great reassurance. It's a miserable experience and that will save us time searching for food." She says while she waits on Esta's response.
"I'd be happy to come with you Durnham. I could help you make sure you get a proper deal, though I doubt it wouldn't be with what I've seen of the town so far." Trying not to think of jeweler items she might need.
“I have heard of goodberries,” Durnham looks at Ressys, “I hear they’re delicious and filling. Imagine... a full day of food in one berry....” He smiles and turns to include Kotar, “Nature has a magic as well, that’s the source of some of the superstitious traditions and beliefs out there.”
”There’s truly a world full of magic, knowledge, secrets, and wonder all around us, and I want to learn it all!”
Watching carefully and in silence as his friends made the trading with Esta, Kotar noticed how inexperienced he really was. Even more than during the time with Bennar. The goliath didn’t share the dwarf’s ability to forge weapon, but they were no strangers to his hand. He knew how to wield most, if not all of them. But there, when it came to jewels and herbs, he was completely lost.
“You spoke like a Skywatcher.” He said looking at Durnham, just to notice that the wizard might not be familiar with the term. “It’s how we call the most experienced shaman or druid in the clans.” The he turned to the others, a little awkwardly. “I don’t think I’m a good choice to go after the rations, at least not alone. I have no good sense of value for most things and could be tricked out of any money more easily than I like to admit, but I can help by looking angry behind someone good at talking.”
Kotar had come to learn that shorter folk tended to think of taller people as intimidating, specially if he tried to put an angry facade. He had even been hired a couple of times in Uthodurn to do just that - stand angrily.
“Skywatcher? I’ve never heard the title before.” He nods over towards Ressys, “He’s more of the skywatcher type.”
”Me, I’m just fascinated with knowledge and magic. There’s so much going on around us that we don’t understand. So much to learn and explore...” he smiles at Kotar “Knowledge and understanding bring wisdom, power, and safety. Knowing your enemy, knowing the danger, allows people to face it squarely and survive.”
“Know the enemy and know yourself and you need not fear the results of a hundred battles” Brandon nods to Durnham “that is what they taught us. You are wise to seek knowledge and understanding, but be careful, the path to power can sometimes lead to dark places. I too seek answers to questions. Maybe we will find some together across the seas”
He slaps Durnham on the shoulder and grins “I think we can wait until tomorrow and pick up rations before we board the ship, but I will accompany you to the jeweler. I would like to learn more about how this gem aids your magic.”
Catching himself as he staggers a step from the slap to his shoulder, Durnham gasps “ah! Careful Brandon, I’m not as strong as you.” He rubs his shoulder saying, “Too much excess into anything can lead to dark paths. I’ll be careful.”
”Let’s go to that jeweler and if I can get a diamond I’ll show you how to use it as a focus.”
You head in the direction of the Rivensmiths’ place and see Thorak Grayfist’s shop right next to it. another converted home, a sign over the front door has a picture of a gleaming ruby but no text.
Inside you find a front room converted into a shop area. The back quarter is cordoned off by a long counter, behind which stands a young adult dwarf with a strange monocle in one eye and a ring perched in the grip of one hand. He is inspecting it closely and doesn’t react when the bell clangs above your head other than to say “Jist a sec”
The larger portion of the room, in which you stand, is bordered with low display cases full of a variety of cut and uncut gems as well as a scattering of finished pieces like rings, necklaces and bracelets.
You have just about taken in the room’s layout and contents when Thorak pops the monocle out of his eye and looks up at you, a red ring circling him where the tool had clearly rested for a long time.
“He really is.”He said in answer to Durnham’s comment about Ressys, just a moment before the dwarf and then Brandon started talking about the importance of knowledge. “In certain ways this is the case even before meeting danger. After all, there is a big difference between blindly swinging a blade and wielding it with technique. We can say that even the ability of fighting with nothing but one’s body is the fruit of knowledge and understanding.”
That was especially true for those who sought to unleash the power of their echo. How many years had he dedicated to this very purpose and how far that had led him? The vision in Brennar’s smity was proof he was closer of Lo-Kang. His body was starting to naturally feel the potential futures around him. All that was necessary was to feel through this potential. A last step, the harder step.
“Rations tomorrow then.”Kotar mentioned nodding to the warlock’s suggestion. “Everyone should carry their own snowshoes, but shouldn’t we part the coal amongst ourselves? I also think I should carry the climber’s kit, since I’m more used to carrying wight and climbing mountains.”
They arrived at Grayfist’s store before any answer could be given. Are all the shops in here converted homes?
As they walked to the shop Durnham listened to Kotar’s description of understanding yourself and your weapon. “You’re right Kotar, I imagine watching someone else fight and learning their style can also teach you how to counter it more effectively.”
When Kotar speaks about caring the climbing gear, Durnham nods in agreement. “Yes... I’m not much of a climber. I’ll need your experience and help when it comes to climbing anything tougher than a ladder!” And he grins at Kotar.”
Upon entering the shop, Durnham looks about at all the items on the shelves. When the shopkeeper acknowledges their presence he speaks up, suddenly nervous in front of this person he’s never met before. “Uh... hi. You must be Thorak? Uhm, Esta recommended your shop. I’m uhm, looking for a small loose diamond.”
Thorak's eyes move around the group although his head barely moves. They finish their tour on Durnham, taking in his new customer, immobile as he considers the request for a small loose diamond.
"Huh. Yeah, ah've got what you're lookin' fur"
His accent is hard to place, it makes him almost impossible to interpret. His hand moves under the counter while he keeps eye contact, then comes back out with a small diamond, roughly cut and nearly spherical.
Qidira moves in close to the counter, looking at the diamond in Thorak's hand. Taking out her own monocle, "May I?" She says holding out her hand confidently. Glancing at where he pulled it from. "Then, he needs just the right one for his spells. We're searching for a cure for the disease that affected his uncle and now even children...ah, a minute." She pulls out some gloves from her jewelers kit, slipping them on. "Now if you would allow me to take a look at it?"
...
Previously..The little gnome gathers up her new found trinkets/costume jewelry thrilled that Esta agrees to her price, and rushes to keep up with the others who are likely already on their way to the jeweler. Qidira is happy to carry her 4 lb share of the coal, eager to let Kotar heft the climbing gear and rations tomorrow sounds perfect .
“Thank you Qidira,” Durnham crowds next to the small gnome and looks at the diamond with his naked eye. “I’m not a good judge of jewels or gems, Ive just been taught the concepts of how the cut and clarity need to be sufficient to produce the necessary magical focus and desired effect.”
He looks at Thorak, “Are you uh... new to Palebank? I don’t think we’ve met... not that I’ve ever tried to buy jewels before, and you’re uhm... accent... isn’t local.”
Durnham places the incense, charcoal, and herbs into his backpack. “I think I’m good aside from more rations,” he says to Brandon.
