Backstory: At her parents tavern, Nerimae grew up listening to tales of adventurers. Stories of far away lands, of heroes and villains, these are what Neri grew up on, told by those who had lived these tales. As she grew older, she began to help her parents run the tavern, or when they weren't busy, would sing and play instruments to lighten the mood. One day when she was helping in the tavern, she over heard some adventurers talking about strange things happening by the nearby town of Saltmarsh. Neri grabbed a chair and sat down with them. The pair told her of what they had heard and that they were headed in that direction on another quest and could accompany her part way. She begged her parents to let her go, it wouldn't be too long she promised. The next day, she set off with her new companions and headed south to try her hand at adventuring. In one hand she carried her father's walking stick and in her other, her favorite lute.
Backstory: Athena grew up as a ward of the temple. She doesn't know anything of her parents or why she was dedicated as an infant, but since that is not part of her life it doesn't much matter. Her life has been study and prayer and study and prayer. Now, with a book or prayers in one hand and a book of rituals in the other, she is prepared to travel the wider world in the name of the Moon Goddess and bring aid and healing to those in need.

Lesxana grew up on board her father’s merchant ship after her mother died when she was 6 years old. Growing up on a ship wasn't easy for the child but luckily, the ship’s wizard took her under his wing. The wizard, adored her and frequently encouraged her to assist her in playing minor magical pranks on the other crew mates. She was everyone's favorite, and was able to get away with almost anything. This frequently helped liven the mood and break up the monotony of daily sailor life.
She was 17 when the storm came. Her father’s crew saw it coming but had no idea how devastating it would be. The crew followed their normal protocols, headed to deep water, battened down the hatches, dropped the main sail, and secured all of the cargo. Her wizard friend exhausted every bit of magical energy to keep them afloat but in the end, the ship was pulled into the murky depths.
Lesxana awoke, washed up on a beach with the occasional pile of wreckage strewn about. She searched through the debris, desperately looking for any sign of her father or her wizard companion. She found no signs of survivors, only The wizard’s battered and waterlogged spellbook. She dried the book as best she could and spent her next years learning the few spells she was able to save while putting her sailing knowledge to use aboard various ships.
Backstory: Living in a port city with her merchant parents, she and her older brother by a year were close and the best of friends. Even though he was the athletic one and she wasn't that good of a swimmer, they both loved to play out in the water together. At the age of 13 and 12, one night she had convinced her brother to sneak out with her for a midnight swim in the ocean. After their parents were asleep, they left and swam out into the ocean, going much farther out than usual from shore. The water was cool and it was peaceful as they played, until her brother was suddenly dragged under. Nilena screamed and dove under to swim after him, only able to see the upper half of his body as everything else below was just pitch black darkness, the entire ocean like an abyss. She reached out for his hand but couldn't grab hold before he was completely pulled into the dark and she couldn't hold her breath anymore. She swam up towards the surface but could feel something try to drag her down into the darkness too, struggling and getting water in her mouth before going unconscious. Nilena soon woke up on the shore, coughing up water with her parents around her. They sent out search parties to look for her brother in the ocean, but he was nowhere to be found and presumed dead. After that, the family moved inland far away from any water and sent her away to a church to be a nun. She blamed herself for her brother's death and believed her parents blamed her too, trying to repent for what had happened. She had nightmares about that night over and over, whispers in her ears as she was being pulled down into that watery abyss, sometimes by her own brother as if to share his fate in revenge. No matter how hard she prayed and repented over the years, they never went away and only worsened to the point that she wished that she had drowned that night instead of her brother. That's when she got a vision from Lathander, how she could start anew and drive away the darkness if she would follow the light and use it for good. She agreed and gained her newfound powers, leaving the church to follow through with that vow and do good in the world. She still has her nightmares and it wasn't long before she had ended up in Saltmarsh, looking out and down at the ocean while thinking of her brother...
Ned was with the marines of Salt Marsh for many years, and served honorably. He knew the lands and the sway of the sea and weather very well. But his comrades knew him for his strength. It’s the damnedest thing seeing a halfling throw men across the bar. It’s downright humbling to see what he did during the Storm. In a terrible compounding of plain bad luck, his ship was caught in a storm at sea at the same time that a Sahuagin attack had been launched on the shore. The marines couldn’t get close to shore without being battered on the rocks, but Ned knew the people who lived on that coast wouldn’t stand a chance without them. He jumped ship.
What came next could only be described as a series of miracles: Ned made it ashore, and cut a swath through a dozen sahuagin. He should’ve died twice over, but he still stood despite his wounds. His service earned him a well deserved honorable discharge from the marines. He came to know one of the village’s young women and the two fell in love. However…
Ned found little work available for his skill set. He had difficulty relating to the villagers or even talking to his love. Finally she told him: “if you can’t even take care of a garden, how can I hope you’ll take care of a family?” They were words spoken in anger, but not untrue.
Ned left. He’s heading back to Saltmarsh to look for work. And he’s got a pot of dirt with a few kale seeds planted in it with him.
Hey all - thanks for all the interest and creativity! So much interest. I'm going to close recruitment, got lots of reading to do - will ping a PM to people in the next day or so if chosen.
Backstory - Hugo was born in a average peasant family but always strived to be something better! He spent a ton of time at a young age working with his father at the smithy, creating all sorts of weaponry and armor for the local troops. In his free time he would practice and familiarize himself with weapons and armor that he and his father crafted, becoming very proficient in the Morningstar and all matters of a shield in particular.
The INSTANT he was of age, he conscripted into the ranks of the City Watch, he thought a life of grandeur was afoot and that he would get to see the world one footstep at a time, but the army had other plans for him, he spent most of his time in the Watch surveying outside the walls and dealing with small squabbles in the streets. He started to CRAVE adventure and when his term was up, he sought that adventure!

**Depending on how you feel about the flexible ability score rules in TCoE, I may change some of the ability scores to better fit a wizard build.
