Sephyre suddenly looks a little uncomfortable with the mentioning of the city guard "Oh, where you with the city watch of Waterdeep then? Glad I didn´t run into you and your morning star then." She says smirking again as she accepts another pint from Bonnie.
"So Aster, do you want Bonnie to get you a pillow to sit on there?" Sephyre says to the rock gnome. "What brought you to Waterdeep then, are you planning on any disasters or does those come naturally to you?" She asks curious about the botanist by her side.
"Yes it is an interesting subject but one I would rather not experience myself." Nowles said as he waved his hand in front of him to clear some dirt off the table with a simple cantrip. "I do not play such games often but very well I shall play a single hand."
"Oh I don't mind standing," Aster assures Sephyre. "Makes me feel just a bit taller, y'know?" She laughs. "I've just been traveling around and heard there were some unique plants around here that blooms this season, thought I ought to drop by and collect some seeds and notes!" She points to her bag. "I'm a plant fanatic, if you couldn't tell. I do experiments with the medical and poisonous properties of plants, and sometimes the smell and such can cause problems." She laughs again, shrugging. "Sometimes they're on purpose, sometimes not, so you can say they naturally come to me. They are part of nature after all!"
"Well you would have a good market for poisons in Waterdeep, I can tell you that. The only plant I know of is the seaweed caught in my fathers nets. Let´s hope your disasters come at an appropriate moment then."Sephyre says and smiles to the botanist standing beside her.
"Can't spell disaster without Aster! Can't promise nothin'!" Aster jokes. "And seaweeds are not actually plants, they're algae! I can go on anyhow." She laughs and smiles back at her.
"Algae huh, well now I´ve learned something new tonight. About that, I actually often go diving into the Sea of swords. Anything you would want brought up for your experiments Aster?"
Hugo wrinkles his brow at the talk of water. "I don't know what would posses anyone to want to dive. Sounds like certain death to me. Never have i been fond of large bodies of water."
D’labos gives the cards another good couple flashy shuffles as he takes in the conversation and deals 5 cards to each at the table.
”Game is 5 card stud. Ace’s high, Jokers and 2s are wild. Ante is two silver,” he says, as he casually tosses two silver pieces to the center of the table.
Dressed in a long silvery dress, Marena has been quietly sitting at the table mummering a prayer to Eilistraee under her breath. As she slowly finishes, the drow's red eyes dart up and look over the room. She shuffles her chair a little closer to D'labos to watch him play while looking around the rest of the table. "I am Marena, servant of Eilistraee, goddess of the moon. I am currently in training to become a Sword Dancer. I would appreciate some help navigating the city if you have the time Sephyre. I only recently arrived here from a sister temple." Marena then quietly leans back to watch the game, obviously nervous to be hanging around with a bunch of people she doesn't know. She plays with a wisp of silver hair and watches the group's conversation.
"It seems I shall be learning many things today. While a tour of the city sounds interesting I believe my next stop is to be silverymoon or if they are willing to let another Harpell inside... Candle Keep... But enough blathering let us see if I can not make a fool of myself with this card game." Nowles says as he reaches into a his robe to messing about with what looks like a dozen or so pockets before setting silver on the table.
Suddenly, all the noise of the tavern is eclipsed by a shout: "Ya pig! Like killin’ me mates, does ya?"
As you turn your heads to the voice, a seven-foot-tall half-orc is hit by a wild, swinging punch from a male human whose shaved head is covered with eye-shaped tattoos. Four other humans stand behind him, ready to jump into the fray.
The half-orc cracks her knuckles, gets up out of her seat, ROARS, and leaps at the tattooed figure — but before you can see if blood is drawn, a crowd of spectators clusters around the brawl.
What do you do? (Anyone that's going to intervene on either side, roll initiative.)
Hugo leaps up and runs into the crowd, pushing spectators aside, ready to rumble. He scans the brawlers and notices that the humans are members of the Xanathar guild. with this determination and knowing their distain with the city guard, he jumps to the aide of the half-orc.
Aster tries to stand taller on her chair as the brawl is covered by spectators. ”Well, looks like this game will have to be postponed. I’m going to get front row seats,” she announced. “Hopefully no one get a hurt too bad.”
Marena shrinks into the corner. "I dont jnwo how to deal with people fighting like this. Do we help them? Which side?" She asks no one in particular and small globes of moonlight begin floating around her.
"Oh diving is fantastic, almost like flying, but better." Sephyre says smiling. "I will keep in mind to bring you any special algae i find." She then tells Aster. "So I take it you weren´t with the harbor patrol then." She says smirking at Hugo.
"Nice to meet you Marena, sure you don´t want to join the game." Sephyre says smiling her warmest smile at the shy drow. "Eilistraee huh, sure beats that spider goddess. I don´t have much faith in the gods myself, seeing how the only god caring for the poor fishermen and their families is that tart Umberlee toying with their ships at sea. That doesn´t inspire faith, only fear. Let´s say faith is a gift I have yet to recieve." She says trying to be polite to the priestess.
Sephyre tosses two silvers into the center of the table and looks at her cards, keeping them close to her chest. "You should stick around Nowles, this place might seem dreary but believe me, it will light up in a moment. Waterdeep will have plenty of opportunity for both gold and magic if you are willing to face some risks."
As the fight breaks out Sephyre throws her cards at the table. "Fold." she says and swiftly leaves the table following Hugo. "Well Marena, we shouldn´t help those servants of the Xanathar, I can tell you that. We could settle for this to be a fair fight keeping those four out of it. Anyone care to back me up here?" Initiative:5
Nowles raises a brow as he guesses the card game was over, reaching out to scoop his coins up before moving closer to watch for the time being. It is clear that he is hesitant to get involve himself as he sees that he would likely not be able to take a single punch unless he was very lucky. "I will watch from here...."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
D’labos grabs a shot of whiskey off a passing waitress’s tray, shoots it, and taps the glass on the table. “I’d have a scrap.” He sweeps his cards and the remaining silver into his belt pouch, “don’t want those getting misplaced; we’ll settle up later.”
Nowles - 23 Babyface Bennie: 21 Hugo - 16 D'labos - 15 Average Joe - 12 Pierre the Piercer - 8 Yagra Stonefist the Half-Orc - 7 Krentz the Tattooed Thug - 7 Scar-Eyed Scott - 5
How Initiative Works in This PBP: I'm using a variant rule that makes combat in a play by post a bit smoother: any player with initiative greater than or equal to that of any hostile can go in any order. In this case just Nowles is up now.
