"Then that should be our priority. Protect the crops, then deal with the gnolls one way or the other. Maybe we can do something else about the food's scarcity... I've heard of magics which can create edibles, though I don't have it myself... and wasn't there a spell to enhance plants somehow..?"
Ikarbino - That'd probably be nature or religion your choice. Given your spells, if you succeed a DC 13 check you know the details of those three spells.
Rocky sighs, the fact he had been hoping it was anything other than gnolls was not what had really been bothering him. Lonsvells admission that this was a huge den of them had confirmed his worst fear. She let the problem grow out of control, and the fact she put word out for mercenaries looks like a desperate attempt to get it dealt with. Damn, they could be facing at a minimum two, three dozen if not more. If they are lucky, half as many will be out tonight and if this group can put a serious dent in the raiding party, they might have a chance of saving the city.
In a sullen, and somewhat monotonal voice, Morkraw begins :
" That may be a fine choice, trying to save what can be saved, but it only delays the inevitable. Sooner or later da beast will raze the city and the people to the dirt, then move on to the next ripe meal. Gnolls have only one mindset, eat and destroy. They burn da crops, to soften the people, make them weak and easy to hunt. They'll kill every last man woman and child, pick their bones clean, and take what they want. Then move on to the next set of unfortunate victims.
if ya wish to talk, don't be surprised if they try to rip ya throat out, itsa guarantee. No, thars no point in wasting ya time trying to convince a mountain itsa mole-hill. Tha only way ita move, is if ya tear it apart. "
Nevaeh listens quietly, considering all the words being said. "Verily, this is being a difficult situation. Something is rotten in the state of Vexcall... I am agreeing with my friend Kairynna that if there is a method that we can be taking t'wards a peaceful resolve to this discordant problem, 'twould be best for all. But if these... 'gnoll' people art not moved to be ceasing their raiding and pillaging, 'twill be leaving us with little choice but to be defending ourselves and the weary, imperiled folk of Aosvell. I am not knowing much of this world, but I have been with fair, wise Kairynna long enough to know that to take a life must be the final resort and 'tis not a choice to be making lightly. I will be doing whatever it will be taking to protect this place and these people," Nevaeh states, a smile on her face as she approaches their soon-to-be-patron and takes her hands. "Though this is not being my home, and thee not being my people, I, Nevaeh the Lost Light, am swearing solemnly to be doing my utmost to be defending and preserving the people of Aosvell until this darkness is passing or my light is ceasing to be shining. Thou canst be placing thy trust in me, my fair lady."
Tayvello thinks for a moment listening to the questions and remarks from the others, he had done guard jobs before, not to this extent, but he was beginning to form some possible ideas, "If our primary goal is to protect the field and insure it is not destroyed, do we have the time or supplies to set up any sort of defensive structure? Even a simple fence a couple logs high could give us some extra time. You said that most of the people in town are farmers, do they have any traps used against small game? We could set those if we have any, again it is not something that will stop them completely but strategically placed they could aid us in the long run."
I have no desire to talk Kairynna or Neveah out of plans to seek peace:.. but the others are right. Gnolls are abyssal spawn… slaves to their own chaotic and violent tendencies. But if I cannot dissuade them… I can do my best to support them and be ready when the inevitable happens….
“I say we make for the fields with all haste. I don’t see anyone here who cannot see as well in the dark as in the light, so we should be on equal footing with these nocturnal vandals. Let us get to the fields and then we can make plans for how to… confront… the gnolls once we have seen the lay of the land.”
”Vara, if you haven’t done so already, so should spread the word that your people must stay inside behind barred doors tonight. There’s no way of telling just how this will go and we wouldn’t want one of your townsfolk to get caught in the middle.”
Sigi will look to Thoradin and quietly discuss what spells each of them has prepared (OOC we can just look at each other’s sheets in the campaign) to see how we can best strategize their use and effectiveness.

" I've traveled to da fields wher Ivtan been attacked. Lady Lonsvell, with your quick assistance can ya help me draw a general picture of the fields and town. Givin everyone ere a general overview of what we tryin to save, may expediate our plans on dealin with tha problem. "
Rocky tries to remember what he had seen of the fields, and how they were positioned near the city. He's not too sure if he noticed the unburned section, and hopes Lonsvell has been keeping track of how the fields were destroyed. Hopefully, this gives the group an idea of what needs to be done to save the city.
Varis had been uncharacteristically quiet as the group prattles on about all sorts of things. He finds the discussion on helping the Gnolls see the error of their ways amusing, and although more information is always better, he feels the meeting is quickly reaching the point of diminishing returns.
“Uraim is right’Varis still unaware of the true nature of the dwarf “If these creatures are indeed Gnolls, and my research suggests they are as well, then they are touched by the abyss and cannot be reasoned with” He grins at Kairymma and Thoradin “Although I may be tempted to stand back and watch you try, only to see them rip your tender heart out.”
“If they are on the hunt it may be a precursor to much more..darker..things. There is some good discussion here on traps and defenses, but we should take the fight to them as well. With any luck, it is but a small band that will raid tonight and we can pick them off and follow their trail back to the others. We can stand here all night and talk about it, let’s go see these fields for ourselves.”
Braci finding himself in agreement with Varis and turns to the rest of the group, "I don't think we will do much more good here. Let's head out to the fields and use any remaining time to prepare a defense." He looks toward Vara, "Can you take us to where you believe the attack is going to be?"
With that Braci raises his hood and unbuckles his staff. In his mind he repeats his mantra over and over in preparation of the coming battle. "This body is the shell. This soul is the strength. The Inner Self shall guide me."

Mori has been quiet during this time, observing people and contemplating when to contribute to the discussion. After Varis speaks, Mori nods in agreement and says, "Indeed. Where music cannot heal, steel must." which is a saying Mori barely even understands himself.
Mori will follow the group when they make their way to the fields.
Nevaeh frowns at Varis. "I am knowing little of gnolls, but thine scholarly opinions reveal thou art clearly knowing more than I on the matter. Be doing what thee will, and I shall be doing what I will. Let us away to this field, our charge."
" Aye, best to see what we workin wit. Will a few of da more skilled guards be held in town, as possible safety if things go south, or da beast grow smart? "
Rocky knew having a backup plan in case things go wrong was not really his style, but then he usually worked alone. It's easy to improvise on the fly when you have only yourself to worry about. But this is a whole new challenge, an entire town could be at risk. Best to hedge your bet, and to have eyes in the back of your head.

Thoradin wondered if these people never heard of self defense, and negotiating from a position of strength. "I'll try to deny you the pleasure of seeing that, by Sothel's power. And I'll also have to deny you the pleasure of ripping out their hearts, as well. But hey, you do you, if you relish violence so much, feel free to experience as much of it as you need without our intervention."
Sigi is cognizant of the chasm developing between the two groups, Thoradin and his friends from the tavern, and these new volunteers.
I need to be careful. If this is truly a nest of 30+ gnolls we will need every soul working together. Sothel has brought these champions together to protect this town. I must help him keep them together. For now at least, I will ‘dance with the dwarf that brought me.’
“Thoradin, Kairynna, Mori and Neveah. I will support your efforts in any way that I can. But please see that these others are also honest souls who seek only to help the people of Aoswell. We are comrades with a single aim, though we may seek to chart different paths toward that goal. Before the night is done, we will need them and they will need us. Let us away to the fields and let the gods guide our hands, be it to peace or to war.”

Unless you have something else to say, Vara has two guards guide you all North of Aoswell. It is about 2 hours before sundown when you reach the land you need to protect (if you want to get anything else before you leave you can, specifically you were all directed to the house of Jai - the main hunter in town for traps). One thing you notice as you walk through town is that people are exiting the streets, as they were given the warning that they should stay inside for the night.
The area you were tasked to guard is a few acre plot of farmland with crops close to ready for harvesting. It is surrounded by a simple wooden fence.
Tayvello follows the others to Jai's home to collect as many traps as he can. Once at the farmland Tayvello goes about setting up the traps about ten feet away from the fence on the outside. Tayvello will seek assistance from anyone willing to help him set and hide the traps as best as possible.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Varis studies the fields and surrounding areas closely, trying to determine the best way to establish their defenses. He will focus on which trails the enemy could use to approach the fields, any high ground or choke points, and best places to set traps or an ambush. He will share his thoughts with the group and help set up traps as he can.
