Your shift lasts as long as the drow want it to. If you finished something early, they would just make you do something else, even something trivial like stack up rocks or move dirt around. Everyone will return to the cell at about the same time. Good question!!
Incase anyone didn't know. Containers are now on D&D Beyond, so now all your items don't have to be in ONE BACKPACK. You can now separate stuff that is in a bag of holding and stuff that is just in your backpack!
For clarification: The armory is above the guards directly across from your holding cell. 15 foot bridge to get there and is considered difficult terrain for non-drow.
