"Indeed my dear Grugga." Aubrey answers with a sly smile. "To make contact with an hitherto unknown civilization could mean a vast business opportunity."
Guilim shakes his head at the attitude of the boisterous group, marking them as people to avoid since those types always causes trouble. "So we have information on most of the jobs. Which one are we going to take?"
"I'm very interested in the prospect of meeting a new race, but it sounds like an old wives' tale. Aubrey, you said your family is in business in these waters... what are the odds of this panning out? If there's a decent chance I say we go for it. Worst case scenario we don't find anything and she pays us the consolation prize for our time, then we go after this lizardfolk bounty."Grugga drums his fingers on the table and nods his head as if agreeing with himself. "Well, that's my opinion anyway."
Rohuzar nods to Grugga. “I believe this is a tall tale at best or a scheme of some kind at worst. However, a delay of a couple days could work in our favor. I do not care for the idea of heading after bandits in the swamp with people I’ve never worked with before. This will give us a chance to get practiced at working together as well as a chance to address the mystery job.”
Rohuzar gestures to the job that had been posted in elvish and writes a note on the board by it, also in elvish.
“Red Band. Will be here the next two evenings at least. Speak to barkeep for assistance finding us.”
Rohuzar fills in the barkeep to let them know someone may come asking after them. “I have little experience with underwater work. If anyone has an idea, let’s hear it and start working. No time like the present.”
"I have never done a lot of work that involves being in the water. Most of the Hook and Axe prefer to wear heavy armor so it is rather hard to swim." Guilim admits as he motions to his own heavily armored form.
"Although my family has some interests in trade over the Great Lake I don´t have any useful knowledge of the waters I´m afraid." Aubrey answers Grugga. "I´m not sure what the fishermen did under the docks when they supposedly encountered those mermen, but they were probably not diving, suggesting it´s shallow enough for us to wade there while investigating. Perhaps we should invest in some high waterproof boots though."Aubrey says smiling to the others while finishing up his meal.

Putting your heads together you compare notes on the docks from your own experiences (those who have spent time in Bardstown) or from what Lady Shelley told you (Leelan and Eskil). You come up with the following:
The docks are a mega structure that is anchored on the shore and extends a great distance out over the lake. The coastal waters are shallow and marshy in this area and the docks allow access to deeper water.
The docks have many 'canals' built into them where barges from the lake can move deeper into the complex to be loaded/unloaded. There are also many large buildings on the docks, such as warehouses. The docks must be well supported but no one here knows how, exactly.
It is known that fisherman go under the docks to set and check traps (for freshwater lobsters and crabs, mostly). Some fishermen access the underneath near the shore, others use ladders along the canals to climb down.
There is definitely space between the surface of the water and the underside of the docks above, but no one is sure exactly how much headroom is available.
While it is common knowledge the lake is 'shallow' along the shore under the docks, no one is quite sure how shallow. 1 ft? 3 ft? 5 ft? You all 'think' some of the fishermen wade while others use narrow canoes.
You also are aware freshwater lobsters are about the size of a hound dog, with large claws. They aren't aggressive, but it is common for fisherman to be missing a finger or toe here or there.
And that is all you are able to come up with putting your heads together.

Grugga sips at his now-warm stout and says, "We could head to the docks in the morning and ask some of those fishermen a bit more about it. No one's going to know more about the lake than them... unless maybe there's a expert at Bardstown's, ummm.... college." He look almost physically hurt applying that word to Bardstown Technical College, but continues, "By the way, does anyone know if there's anything in that giant turtle shell? I'd be interested in looking in there."
DM, I can't get water breathing until much later... but do I know of any inventions that might help with water traversal (flippers, diving helmet, etc.?)
It's common knowledge that the giant turtle shell was once home to a variety of dangerous carrion creatures, back when it was still full of rotting turtle meat. Now though it has been decades since harpies nested there and it appears to be mostly just bone now. But the shell is off limits, with a pier leading out to it that is gated and watched 24/7.
Grugga, something like a snorkel would be easy to whip up, though goggles or a mask would require access to glass or polished crystal, or something similar. Perhaps Gel-Nagev will inspire you in your dreams tonight.

Leelan is quick to respond to Grugga’s suggestion.
"As a matter of fact, Lady Shelley provided us with the whereabouts of the last witness of the sea-dwellers occurrence. I believe it would be in our common interest to go and inquire about it to this person."
When speaking about the giant sea turtle shell, Leelan is also quick to respond. "I also happen to have a marked interest in the remains of this peculiar creature. How I wish they’d just let me examine it for but a few days…"
"Would it be too late in the evening to visit that witness do you think?" Aubrey asks Leelan and Eskil.
"Did you consider my offer of staying at the Goldentide residence in Umbridge while we are operating here in Bardstown?" He asks the others as the seem to be ready to take the tab.
"Most generous Rohuzar. And if you would want to save your gold tomorrow night the offer still stands." Aubrey says with a smile and prepares to get a room for the night.
Guilim nods as he finishes his meal and small amount of drink, gathering up his things before sliding out of his chair. "Very well then I will see you all in the morning. I look forward to seeing how things go with out first job together."

Guilim:
As you all step away from the table to head inside the inn for the night, you catch a glimpse of a group emerging from the The Wandering Mage Curiosity Shoppe. A sharply dressed older human man in a dark suit with a white collar, leaning on a cane with golden detail-work. An older human woman in a crimson dress... she looks old enough to be someone's great grandmother, but is dressed as though she is headed to the ball to seduce a prince. A hooded figure in black robes with a silver sash tied to his waist. They stand for a moment talking while a carriage pulls up to spirit them away. Before they board the vehicle, the hooded figure points across the square and all three of them share a long silent look at Grugga... before they board their carriage and depart. The legionnaires remain at their post outside the doors of the shop while the carriage is drawn away.
You all gather your things and take advantage of Rohuzar's generous offer and get rooms for the night. Upon hearing the 6 of you want rooms, Jonny Nevers advises the rate is 4sp per room per night, but then leans across the counter to Rohuzar and advises he will cut you a special rate of 2sp each. So that will be a total of 1gp, 2sp. Assuming you take the rooms, you are given rooms 4, 5 and 6 on the first floor and rooms 22, 23 and 26 on the second floor. There are no keys, with each room having a wooden board on the inside you can use to seal it while you sleep. The rooms have a single bed (bronze frame, real mattress with moderate quality, clean sheets and blankets), a single night table with a candle, an empty waste bucket and a full bucket of cold water (for freshening up). Othewise the rooms are empty. Each second floor room has an 18" square window that can be closed or opened with a shutter. The windows look out onto Freemont Street, one of the tree-lined main roads into the market square.
It's getting late but the tavern is still quite crowded. The minstrels have ended the dancing portion of their performance. The elven girl is now seated with her dwarven partner and he is taking requests from the audience. Most of it is local folk songs, which don't appear to be his specialty but he performs them well enough and the crowd is deep enough into their cups that they seem to be enjoying things.
At this time the party is free to retire for the evening or continue to mill about the tavern if they like. If they are any more actions to take tonight, please do so. Otherwise once everyone confirms they turn in for the night, everyone take a long rest and we will pick up with the sunrise.

Half an hour or so after being assigned room 22, Grugga yawns, stretches, and excuses himself from the table. "Thanks again for paying for the room, Rohuzar. I'm going to get up bright and early and get that letter from the Potters - the parents of the kidnapped girl. I have a friend in Walden's Rest who may be able to help them. Good night all, see you in the morning."
Grugga lugs his machine back over his shoulders and trudges upstairs to bed.
((did Aubrey pay for dinner? he said something about picking up the bill... if so, Grugga would thank him too, of course))
Rohuzar sees Grugga and Aubrey discuss the bill and pulls out a pouch with a red stripe on it.
“There is sign-on bonus. 5 gold pieces each. Please, take.”
Rohuzzar distributes and then stays up awhile to see if anyone comes by the board to check on the job in elvish that had so few details only asking for someplace to meet. If no one comes by soon, he’ll head to his room and go to sleep with the door barred.

"Excellent, that should cover tonights drinks." Aubrey says smiling and winks at Grugga. "Thank you gentlemen for an interesting day. I´m already looking forward to the adventures of tomorrow. I will have a drink at the bar before retiring if anyone would care to join me, these places are full of rumours I hear." He says to the others with a slight bow and heads over to the bar to pick up on todays events in Bardstown. After an hour or two he turns in for the night in room 23 finding it hard to sleep at first thinking of all the possibilities with this new endeavour.
Perusasion if needed to get people talking:18 also spending a piece of gold on drinks if that helps.
