The ancient elves have left! Looking up, you realize they are right. They were here when you all awoke... they must have departed with their ship while you were all interviewing Shaemus. Folk say they sailed off north over the Lake until they were out of sight.
People are saying that the Praefectori and several other major nobles were summoned to the castle in the hours after the elves left. No one knows what it means.

"You asked me earlier about my talisman."Aubrey says to Grugga on their way back to the Robust Hound Inn and Tavern. "The truth is I don´t think I know that much about it, but it has been with my family for generations, and somehow it grants me eldritch powers, although nothing sinister, more like for instance the ability to communicate with thoughts as I mentioned before. The talisman seems connected to my bloodline though so it is not anything anyone could make use of I´m afraid."
As they meet back at the Robust Hound Inn and Tavern for lunch, Aubrey informs the others on the rumors he picked up at the market. He also talks to Jonny Nevers for a while, sharing with him the talk of the day.
"Incredible" Grugga responds to Aubrey's explanation, "it must surely be magical in nature. The college had a collection, of course, but something as powerful as that is rare indeed." His gaze lingers on the talisman for a moment before turning his attention back to all the bits and pieces in front of him. "Once we're done with lunch I'll get started on making the masks. They should be done around sunset."
You find plenty of folk willing to talk to you… unfortunately none of them are quite the right type. You find longshoremen, warehouse workers, sailors, ore shovelers, even a ship’s captain. All of them have heard stories of folk who dwell beneath the waves, and some even believe those stories, but none of them have heard anything that matches up with what Shaemus has told you, and none of them fish below the docks. A few have heard that there are spiders under the docks and a few other note that they dump the garbage and waste from their storehouses right into the canals and are surprised to learn anyone fishes down there at all. All of them believe, to the last man and woman, that if there WERE any sea people hanging around Bardstown, they would have already been identified and it would be common knowledge by now.
Perhaps it was just bad luck, perhaps Guilim isn’t accustomed enough to a port town to identify a lobster-man from a sailor, or perhaps there is just no one about right now who can add anything to your investigation.

Rohuzar is going look for lobster traps and fishermen, asking after what they know and what other strange occurrences might be happening. investigation - 8
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
At the docks:
As the others at the docks are interrogating people, Eskil decides to go for a different approach. He finds a quiet spot by the waters surface (I assume there is some easy way to get down there, like stairs or ladders used to get on row boats or something like that) (Investigation, just in case: 16 ), and spends 10 minutes ritually casting Speak with Animals. He then sprinkles some crumbs left from his breakfast cookie on the water, trying to lure some fish to the surface. (Animal Handling: 17 ) If some come, he asks: "Hello! Do you have a minute to talk with me? I'd like to ask what you know about the people living under the water." (Persuasion, assuming feeding the fish gives advantage: 9 )
If he can manage to converse with some fish, he'd like to ask: 1) where in the lake the people living underwater live, 2) if they too can speak with animals, and 3) if they can speak with animals, what could he give the fish to get him to tell them he would like to meet them.
It takes most of the morning but you eventually find what you're looking for. Initially suspicious you are just looking for his fishing hotspots, he calms down once he realizes you are an armored adventurer and not a crafty fisherman. He is happy to chew your ear off about all the comings and goings beneath the docks. Not much is helpful but he does confirm a few things.
He confirms Shaemus' story about nets, traps, etc being stolen or broken under the docks. He's heard the stories about sea people being responsible but suspected it was a treacherous fisherman sabotaging the competition. In any case he hated fishing down there at night because thats when the spiders come out. They never attack, but it is creepy to hear 2 foot long spiders munching on lobsters above your head while you are trying to fish in the dark.
He can also confirm virtually everyone has abandoned fishing below the docks at night.
He also says he heard a partial body was recovered during the day by fishermen. It was last month, before Lem Lemonhands disappeared. It looked like it had been eaten.
Most of the fishermen he knows are superstitious and there are a lot of different opinions about what is going on down there... but most are variations of... someone or something doesn't want us down there....
He continues to share legends and idle fishermen tales about giant lobsters and pike that you can ride but it seems he ran out of useful information.
Eskil:
It takes you quite a while to find a way down on your own, but eventually you find a ladder leading down to a canal. You can see where a boat or skiff is normally tied here, but it is gone at the moment. Sprinkling your bread crumbs, you see the water is about 2 feet here with a sand bottom covered in small freshwater clam and snail shells. There is also a few water plants growing. Looking off in either direction, you see the gloom below the docks spreading off, with a long sliver of light, like the sunrise, on the lake side where the docks end and open water begins. Also, here and there you can see where light breaks through due to a canal, illuminating other areas to your east and west.
Eventually, a large carp rises to the surface and begins to pluck your breadcrumbs into its sucker-like mouth.
Fish are not particularly intelligent.
At first you think you are making some headway as it acknowledges seeing lots of sea people on two legs, but you soon realize once it mentions boats that it is just talking about fishermen. It generally likes fisherman as they leave lots of tasty garbage behind them. It becomes very confused when you explain you are looking for people that live under the water. It tries its best to explain to you that people live above the waves, not below.
Eventually, you gather that it only knows of a single creature like what you are describing... like a human but living beneath the water. Its a horrible thing, not something it would ever try to talk to, just swim away from... the waters taste like death when it comes... the fish tries to think... it may be coming again soon. Its probably best to leave the area.
With that it grabs a few more pieces of bread, bubbles a thanks, and swims away. For the duration of the spell you try to chat with a few smaller fish, but none either possess the intelligence to carry on much of a talk, or aren't aware of any news outside of fish school drama.

Aubrey orders the Shredded Red Salmon and a glass of Riesling and informs Rohuzar, Guilim and Eskil of the talk at the market. (post #181) "Unless we have other business to attend to before nightfall at least Grugga and myself will relocate to the Goldentide town house over in Umbridge when we´re finished here. If we all go there we could plan out this nights excursion under the docks together. Do you need any help with assembling those under-water-breathing-devices do you think Grugga?"Aubrey finishes turned to the artificer.
Grugga orders the basket of jerky and munches on it as he preps his materials at the tavern table. In response to Aubrey, Grugga answers without looking up from the copper pipe in his hands, "I don't think I'll need any help with it. But if anyone would like to be an extra set of hands or would like to watch that would be fine. Once everyone who's coming is ready, I'm ready... I can't concentrate in this clamor."
Jonny Nevers spares a moment of gossip with Aubrey while pouring a glass of wine. While most of the talk in town and in the tavern still concerns the elves, Jonny is intrigued by the rumors of strife between the sons of houses Cammarota and Schmidt. "Once upon a time, people were afraid to even speak the name Cammarota. Now, since the the Falcone's were awarded the 1st Legion, people are gossiping about them like it is going out of season. Not me." He wipes a glass. "They are still one of the most powerful houses in all the land. And if they are desperate or feeling besieged... well, what do they say about wounded animals, eh?"
Rohuzar, when he sees you check the board, Jonny calls you over to the bar. "An elf in traveling clothes came up to the bar this morning to ask about the 'Red Band' and a note you had left for him. I told him you were expected back but couldn't say when. He hung around for about an hour but said he couldn't stay longer. He said he will make arrangements to come back tomorrow at lunch and at dinner, to hopefully connect with you." He leans in... "Not sure what that's all about. But he looked real nervous... whispered as he spoke to me. Like he was afraid someone was watching him. Kept looking around the whole time he was waiting. Weird guy." As an afterthought, before he moved on to another customer... "Oh... and he struggled with common. Only really spoke elvish. Like I said... weird guy."

You find one reference to a spider that feeds on aquatic creatures. It is a blind spider from the deep caves in the mountains called the Cave Fisher. It has developed an unusual, dense webbing. It lowers a ball of this into the water and fish and cave shrimp are attracted to chemicals it releases. The webbing is able to hold its “stick” even underwater and the spider reels back in whatever prey is unlucky enough to take the bait. Certain specimens are said to have adopted their feeding style to lasso goblins or other terrestrial prey, those this is all anecdotal without confirmed evidence.
we are far from the mountains though so you cannot say this report has any certain connection to your study of the Cave Fisher.
