The small creatures hop up suddenly and the three of them hobble in an awkward way over to her. They walk all around her, examining her clothes, her gear, poking at her boots and flicking the laces about. After a few minutes of this they turn to each other and have a short conference. Two of them skuttle away into the underbrush. The last one clambers up Kari's body and sits down on her shoulder. A few moments pass, but....the others do not return. Though...Kari feels a distinct lack of the biting cold. She almost feels...comfortable out in this, the same as when she'd eaten the troll heart. She can feel the cold, but it doesn't bother her. The Chwinga sits on her shoulder, seemingly uninterested in getting off of her or going anywhere.

Kari tries not to move too fast as they come over. Oh, hello friends. It's nice to meet you. Do you like my pack? It comes in handy for picnics. I'm Kari- oh! That tickles! Well, uh, make yourself at home. Do you, uh, want some fruit? She carefully cuts of a small piece of the dried fruit from her rations and holds it up to see if the little spirit will take it. When the others don't return Kari starts packing away the edible food and shakes off her sock. Would you like to meet some more friends? I think they would like to meet you. Do you have a name I can call you? With the picnic packed away, minus the plant matter that she leaves behind, Kari stands and starts back toward to group.
Badger stands back and watches the pantomime with amusement. These creatures are so harmless, so natural, and just watching their antics touches a soft spot somewhere in the gnome's heart. He knows he has accepted a commission to capture one for study, and although he feels no particular compulsion to honor the arrangement, he is curious whether a study of these little folk could yield any information that might help to solve the problem of the ring. But as he watches them, he decides their innocence is so pure that he doesn't wish to disrupt it by trying to capture one, and he abandons all thoughts of it as Kari approaches with her new friend...

The small creatures faces Kari as she talks, but says nothing. However it does make a bunch of big expressions with its hands. She's not sure it understands her at all, but can't make head nor tails of it's hand motions or what it could possibly be intending with them. That said, it seems happy to sit there as she returns to the group. When the others come into view, it scampers across her shoulder and clings to her neck, trying to hide under the rim of her helm or some loose hair. It's not fully hiding from the group, but certainly looking for cover.
For the rest of you, Kari returns to the group, and has to stretch her neck to the side to try and glance at her own shoulder where a small little creature dressed in a big pine tree like outfit with a mask on is scampering around. Its mask face stares at each person one at a time with caution. Otherwise, it seems to make no particular attempt to flee, or say hello, or anything else.
"Yea that seems to track with what happened with our previous encounter with the little devils." Mal says, "So now on to town I take it and Kari, you might want to grab a scarf or something and give that thing a place to hide if it wants to, just in case the townsfolk are not as open minded."
Oh, sure. Kari digs her scarf out from the neckline of her jacket and adjust it to loosly drape on the back of her neck. So they just stick around then? What happened the last time? Do you know how to talk to them, or what they like? I hope it sticks around long enough to get back to Bryn Shander, but we should probably go check on, uh, what was his name? Mac...reed? Mackerel? Macklemore? The fellow in the woods here.
Badger explains that the chwingas in the jungle didn't linger for long at all, and usually departed within moments. But both of the ones he encountered left someone a gift of some kind - usually a magical charm. He rubs his wrist as he recalls the small rough-woven bracelet that one gave him.

Now that she isn't feeling so cold, Kari is comfortably adjusting her scarf around her neck. The cool air breaths against her neck in a pleasant way as the scarf is pulled away enough. The chwinga takes the hint, and immediately clambers into it, forming a little pocket for itself to sit in right next to her neck. She's got to hold her head pretty still to not jog it around, but it should work fine.
The group trudges through the deep snow back to the road, and the axebeaks and sled. On the way, Kari seems to not sink into the snow at all and strides right past the rest of the group with ease. Kurik tries to walk in the same spots as her, but sinks deep into the snow. Eventually you get back to the road. The chwinga raises both hands in the air when it sees the axebeaks. Then it makes a head smashing motion, banging its head into the soft scarf nest a few more times, before raising both hands a final time then settling back down.
Kari has earned the following Charm from the Chwinga:
Charm of the Snow Walker. This charm has 1 charge. As a reaction, you can expend the charm's charge to gain immunity to cold for 1 minute. Until the charge is used or it's immunity expired, you have the additional benefits:
You ignore difficult terrain caused by snow or ice.
You can see through areas heavily obscured by snow to a distance of 60 feet.
You are immune to the effects of extreme cold (though you gain no protection from cold damage).
Founded by a Sembian family from Urmlaspyr, Lonelywood is a quiet town of loggers, fishers, and scrimshanders scratching out a living on the edge of the world. The town’s oldest buildings and docks bear carvings of dragons, lions, and goats that pay deference to the family’s crest, which featured a chimera.
Roughly half of Lonelywood’s able-bodied residents trawl the lake for knucklehead trout, while most of the others spend their days in the forest felling and hewing the trees that are used to construct boats and buildings. Lonelywood’s timber is taken by cart to be sold in other settlements, Termalaine and Targos in particular. You soon discover that there is a tavern and a general store, but there is no Inn here. The Ramshackle used to be an Inn but appears to have been shut down and is being used for lumber storage.
You enter into the tiny town of Lonelywood at around 1pm. The sky is light to the south, the couple of hours that the stars hide for a time and some minor shadows appear. The man you look for is supposedly in a cabin in the woods, north of here a few hours, somewhere along the river.

The axebeaks plod down the snowy streets of the small town until you arrive outside The Happy Scrimshander. They settle in, crouching down until their bodies touch the ground and cover their legs, and lean against the building to get some shelter from the wind. The other axebeaks quickly all huddle up until there's a small crowd of feathery creatures all crowded against one another. You regard the shop. The little shop faces the docks. Heading inside the place is dimly lit by two yellow magical lamps set into the walls. The store largely sells tools of the scrimshander’s trade....everything someone who is in the whaling trade might need: needles and knives in a wide array of shapes and sizes, inks in a rainbow of colors, and wax used to seal engravings when they're done. The shop also has a large section that sells a random collection of everything else a general store might need to sell, though precious few of any one thing. The shop’s owner is an older human spinster. As you walk in she glances up, silently appraising the group, then says, "Iriskree Harrowhill at yer service. Welcome to the ScrimShander. Can I help you find anything?" She seems annoyed to have to be talking to someone.
You inquire after Macreadus. The woman seems offended that you're asking, "People's business is their own business, I ain't got loose lips. You wanna know, as him yerself." She then adds with a grumble, "Or ask that casual slut Danae at the Lucky Lier. You'll hear a few different answers depending on her mood." The woman grins a tooth gaped grin. The door opens and a middle aged Raven haired woman steps into the store. She glances around at the party. After laying eyes on each person, she looks around some more, as if expecting to see someone else. Iriskree grins again, "Or ask 'er yerself."
The woman, apparently Danae, glances around at the group, "Ask me what? Who are these folk. I heard there was a group of adventurers from out of town. Is this all of you then?" She seems...disappointed?
Kurik inquires about Macreadus, "That man? Think he magically makes his own food or somethin I think, cause he rarely comes into town. Haven't seen him in weeks. The white moose might o got 'im though. Who can say."

Kari had been looking at the knives on display,l but the woman's comment has her looking around, slowly so she doesn't disturb her hidden companion. A white moose? What's that?
The sour answers from Iriskree are a stark and unexpected contrast from the quaint and cosy picture that the view of the town painted in Badger's mind. Danae's uninspiring assessment of the group doesn't help either, and Badger is wondering whether the whole town couldn't use a good spanking to improve their attitude. The thought of it makes him smile inside, and it is in this humor that he hears mention of the 'white moose'. Assuming it is some kind of nuanced reference to something else, he snickers audibly. But it soon becomes apparent that Danae is serious, and the comment was literal, so Badger suppresses his smile and begins inspecting the floor, trying to look inconspicuous as he activates his helm and scans Danae's thoughts, seeing what lies beneath her answer to Kari...
Danae looks to Kari and shrugs, "Oh, the loggers in town have been harassed by some mystical white moose. I think it's another fanciful story, but I've heard it from several of them...still....maybe they've just been out in the cold too long. So. Who are you folk then? (I'm going by the rules for telepathy referenced by the details of the magic item. Badger can open a link with one other character at a time, and both can communicate while that link is open, but it doesn't include other characters.)
Telepathy
Telepathy is a magical ability that allows a monster to communicate mentally with another creature within a specified range. The contacted creature doesn’t need to share a language with the monster to communicate in this way with it, but it must be able to understand at least one language. A creature without telepathy can receive and respond to telepathic messages but can’t initiate or terminate a telepathic conversation.
A telepathic monster doesn’t need to see a contacted creature and can end the telepathic contact at any time. The contact is broken as soon as the two creatures are no longer within range of each other or if the telepathic monster contacts a different creature within range. A telepathic monster can initiate or terminate a telepathic conversation without using an action, but while the monster is incapacitated, it can’t initiate telepathic contact, and any current contact is terminated.
A creature within the area of an antimagic field or in any other location where magic doesn’t function can’t send or receive telepathic messages.
So just Kari at the moment.
