Kurik watches with some curiosity as Badger fiddles with his helmet. Grenk had mentioned something about it in the year since they had reconnected and he recounted some of their trials. He didn't reveal any of how it works, nor would he. He wasn't big on mages. Then all the excitement happened with the other gnomes.
"Tell me Badger... is there some rule that states the smaller the person, the more trouble they are?" Kurik says after the other gnome did the whole I'm watching you thing.
Badger scowls at Kurik and retorts: You're what... three times my size? Are you three times better than I? If not, the rest is wasted space. Then, taking a slightly more deferential tone, he adds: Perhaps I may have been a little... imprudent... but it yielded worthwhile information.
Badger has little to offer to counter the effects of the weather, other than to snuggle deeper into his warmer clothes, shield himself from the falling snow with his Mage Hand, and carry on riding.

"Better?" Kurik says with a little smile, "can neither confirm or deny... was just asking about trouble. Either way don't take it as an insult. Stress keeps one moving forward. Prevents the knifes edge from becoming dull," he responds.
Walking with just her cloak on, Mal looks about the group as they continue their march northward and chuckles inwardly, Well at least this Ring has one bonus, I don't have to suffer like the rest in this cold.
Thinking back to the gnome's gift, she almost tossed it to the side of the road as soon as they left town as she is very wary of the item. "Hey Badger, can you check to see what type of enchantments are on this item? I just have a sinking feeling that Gnome and whoever that....ummm, Beladona or whatever their name is, is using this item to keep track of me. I kind of just want to toss it and be done with it, but against my better judgement, it interests me."
Kari stretched after breakfast and blew her nose on a hanky that she took out of, and then tucked back into her sleeve. Well, there's no time like the present to resupply, I'm off to the store to see if they are open. Anyone else want to come? She waits for their answers before leading the way to the store, following the directions of their waitress. She buys 10 more rations and asks about health potions, I'm also looking for something to carry around that can keep me warm, I've heard of a thing like a box, and you put something hot inside to carry it around. Would you have anything like that?
The shop keeper at "Hundlestone General Store" is a grumpy dwarven woman with a thick beard and head of hair. She frowns as Kari comes in, ducking her head under the door frame as she does so. The place is crowded full of all manner of goods, from food stuffs, to mining equipment, to childrens toys.
"Uh...try a coat woman. That's all I got. Warm fur coats, over there, might be some big enough for ya."
At the mention of potions she nods, and opens a small wooden rack with vials of different colors. "Sure do, got normal ones, half dozen, and two greater ones too." (Normal prices as in the PH.)
Badger inspects the wind up dog for Mal, but the thing appears to be just magical enough to make it function, and Badger can see no suspicious spell aura's on it.

What's the difference between a Wizard and a Sorcerer? Class.
Kari pays for the two greater potions and rations and leaves. Back at the tavern rooms, as she and Kurik are settling in, she sits on her bed and stares at him for several seconds. You look strong, but that armor is weird. How strong are you really? I tell you what, why don't we arm wrestle? We could make it interesting, loser has to tell the winner something about themself. What do you think? She plops her elbow down on a small table, arm up and ready to grasp hands.
Kurik looks at Kari amusingly. "I look strong? Well, strength is something all Goliaths have but in terms of raw muscle, you surely have me beat." Kurik says and gives a wink. "But who am I to shy away from a challenge!" He pulls up his sleeve and assumes the position.
Kurik raised his hand and flexed his fingers after his loss. He looks up at Kari and gives a small smile. "You want to know something about me?" He looks away, and then away and up while he thinks. "Well, I've traveled farther than most, seen things that shouldn't be seen, picked up a few friends along the away and have learned to speak with the blade."
That's not so different than myself then, unless your blade speaks back. Mine don't do that, they just hit things. Satisfied, she finishes her nightly routine and gets her rest. That evening she is ready to travel on, not looking back at the room or the tavern, though she will sorely miss the warm bed.
The group stands in the blowing snow that comes down around them. The warmth of their beds and of Hundlestone's Tavern just a distant memory. Shoulders and hats are coated in a white rim, breath plumes from your mouths...except for Mal who inversely does not have the same puffs of warm cloudy air expelling from her. She looks perfectly comfortable as the snow falls around her. You push on, continuing down the incline from the mountain tops towards the tundra of Icewind Dale, somewhere ahead through the darkness. You quickly begin to move slower, trudging through foot deep snow is hard work and it tends to cover rocks and holes. You press your way forward along the trail that is soon nothing more than a white flatter gap between bumpier other white covered terrain. Eventually you hit a tree line and you're trudging through an icy forest in blowing snow. The snow doesn't turn into a terrible storm though and you're able to press forward along the path as you try and follow the signs of the road, in the darkness. The temperature has dropped precipitously and the air has a terribly biting sting to it. You find yourselves needing to cover every patch of skin you can to keep it from freezing. Mal of course seems fine, her face uncovered, she walks along as if she's on an afternoon stroll. Kurik as well seems acclimated to the cold and though he's bound up and protected, he doesn't seem too bothered. Kari and Badger though find themselves peering through patches of fur trying to keep the heat from seeping out of every part of their body. Their legs are numb and their fingers number.
Can I get a survival check (with help) from one party member please?
Badger is starting to look like a furry ball with legs, and his bulbous nose sticks out of his wrappings, its usual reddish tinge turning blue. He rides up as close to Kurik as he can, saying nothing but hoping the goliath's bulk will shield him from the freezing wind, and feeling a little abashed... Maybe all that 'wasted space' comes in useful after all...

Kurik stands firm against the harsh blowing wind and snow. It is surprising refreshing at least it was until his armor shivered slightly and seemed to press further against his skin. Come to think if it, this was the first time it had ventured into the cold with him like this. He briefly wondered if it regretted bonding with him or if the goliath blood was still worth it. In any case he provided what assistance he could in navigating this storm.
The group trudges through the snow for hours, Kari continually pointing them along the right path and keeping them on the snow covered road. The darkness fails to break after walking for over twelve hours through the snow....and you figure it's about time to camp. Kari points to a good spot off the road, but as you're dropping bags and hopping off of horses, and considering that one of Badgers' magical towers might not be such a bad idea Kari glances back along your trail and notices three large shapes approaching through the snow. They have clearly followed your tracks. The big hulking forms advance forward...and when they get closer you see them for what they are...large trolls....but they appear adapted to the cold, covered in tufted fur. They rush forward!

As the trolls trudge towards you, everyone has time to react!
I'm going to forgo a map at the moment, it's open ground, but counts as difficult terrain due to the thick snow. The trolls are 30 feet from the group.
Mal, Kurik, Kari, and Badger, all of you can take your turns!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kurik backs up a few feet in the snow and draws his blade. Uttering the magic words, it bursts into flames. Taking a fighting stance. He twirls the blade a few times and makes three heavy slashes at the air. As each slash is made, a slightly shimmering black slash mark flies out heading towards the leading most troll.
Move: moving back 5 feet (10ft of movement) this should put him just out of that 30 ft movement, assuming their speed is 30ft and they don't have reach. Drawing sword
Mal rolls her eyes and smacks her forhead at the common mistake the party made of not covering their tracks as she brings up her crossbow, "We have been lax for far too long living in Waterdeep, we deserve this fight but lets end it quickly."
She will target an undamaged troll and use one of her maneuvers to trip it.
Heavy x-bow 1: Attack: 32 Damage: 10 Necrotic Damage: 7 Trip Maneuver Damage: 2 Creature must make a STR DC 17 save or fall prone.
Heavy x-bow 2: Attack: 28 Damage: 8 Necrotic Damage: 11 Trip Maneuver Damage: 4 Creature must make a STR DC 17 save or fall prone.

With the freezing air and falling snow, Badger has been contemplating ways to warm himself up with magic. So his fire-producing spells come quickly and easily to mind as he hears the warning of the approaching trolls. Extending the shivering hand that clutches the smaller of his two crystal balls, he shouts a word in Gnomish, and a small glowing bead shoots out to explode in the midst of the trolls...
Fireball at 5th level for 24 fire damage. DC 17 DEX save for half.
