Syd hoists himself up into the attic, perhaps requiring an unceremonious shove from underneath by Mohdrak. The shiny glint catches his eye and he proceeds a bit recklessly in that direction.
(OOC on the upper level, we have explored the western half, but not the eastern, correct?)
The party makes their way back through the planetarium and laboratory to the landing at the top of the stairs. Placing the suit of armour to the side, one of them pops the trapdoor above and, with a boost from one of the party's taller members, pokes their head through the hole. There is an awful lot of dust up there and it's fairly dark, but assuming either darkvision or another source of light is used, they can discern that this attic seems to stretch the length of the mansion in either direction. To the west, where they've explored, they can see a faint light streaming through the floorboards all the way at the end of the attic, which they can deduce is over the chained library. To the east, they can see a bit more diffuse light coming from two locations.
Aside from the disturbance made by the current opening of the trapdoor, there is the faintest evidence of one pair of footprints heading west along the attic. To the east, the dust appears undisturbed.
Ollezall will volunteer as tribute. Ollezall describes the scene and sound of footprints to the party.
Climbing all the way up, Ollezall will ask if anyone has nails or pitons to secure a rope so others can climb up. Ollezall takes out his rope and looks around for alternative fixtures to secure a rope to. Ollezall will undo some of the hitches in the rope to create wider loops for foot holds.
"If I recall, some of you didn't have the ability to see in the dark." Ollezall takes out a few copper coins and casts light on them "I expect these back; I'll leave them near the trapdoor, take one or 2 if you need them. "
Taking perhaps 5 more copper, Ollezall casts light and lobs them at various distances in the direction of the foot prints. There will be no surprise tonight mysterious menace.
Mohdrak picked the "flail" up from the ground. Calling it a weapon would be a bit generous: it was just a length of chain attached to the spine of a book. Sure, you could flail around with it and that would make it a flail in the most technical sense of the word but other than threatening someone with a papercut, there was not much to it. Terribly unbalanced was what it was. He still put it away in his backpack. It might be interesting to see what made this book so special someone thought it prudent to fasten it with a chain to a bookcase.
The minotaur braced himself and gave Syd a needed push to reach the upper level. From the corner of his eye he saw Ollezall work his magic. Mohdrak gave a low whistle in appreciation for those without the skill to see in the dark. 'Impressive. The mages I know can only cast light on a single object. You must be cut from a better cloth than most.'
He looked up and put a hand to his mouth. 'Syd! What do your Orc eyes see?'

(OOC on the upper level, we have explored the western half, but not the eastern, correct?)
(Correct, western half has been completed, just a couple rooms in the eastern half remaining.)
The party shuffles about in the dust, ducking to avoid some of the haphazardly constructed rafters when necessary. Their exploration is occasionally punctuated by groans from creaky floorboards, but nothing to worry about. Moving toward the glinty metal, Ollezall sees a copper amulet hanging from a nail stuck in the lower part of one of the exposed studs on an exterior wall. He can see that it has the emblem of a gear engraved on the front of it on what looks like a tiny door. If he listens very carefully, Ollezall can just barely hear some whirring and ticking sounds coming from the amulet.
Cerlinde discovers a small wooden chest near the amulet, strapped with iron and locked. The lock looks to not be of very high quality, as if the owner wasn't particularly concerned about someone opening it.
The rest of the party finds some carvings in the rafters, including 'Fistandia was here - 1483', 'Fistandia + Freyot 4ever' in a heart, 'Fistandia > Fistandantilus!', 'Cumin sucks radishes' with a frowny face, and 'Stay out, Coriander! XXX'. They also find a small wooden crate at the end of what appear to be the freshest path through the dust. It is marked in red paint with the message 'Private Property', but is not otherwise secured or locked.
Not having any skills with locks, Cerlinde goes and looks in the crate first. “Can somebody open that old chest? I’ll look at this crate. What is that Amulet- I wonder if it is magical…”
Syd will help somebody clever to investigate the chests for gas traps, poison needles, etc. And then he will inspect the goodies inside like a kid on Halloween checking his candy bag.
(OOC I'm assuming they do Halloween in Canada, not sure about Australia or wherever Axe is from).

Much to my chagrin they do; and since I don't personally celebrate it, I sometimes get egged or toilet papered. So I keep spare lollies if you dress well and are a kid, and a high pressure hose if you're an A-hole and I see you take an egg out.....

Ollezall takes the locket, turns it over a few times and hands it to the company wizard; " what do you make of this? I think perhaps this is a locking mechanism for a door. I saw a dwarf in town who infused magic into clockwork to create tools and companions to fight with. Even Syd could use the creations to perform it's programmed magic, the clockwork was enchanted. Do you think it might be used similarly?"
Ollezall will take the help action based off of that speel.
Walking over to the carvings, Ollezall will use his passive perception (15). "Think we found the other wizard?" He muses aloud. Ollezall joins Syd in snooping through the private chest.
Depending on the actions taken, Ollezall will take out his darts first and see if he can unlock the chest below the amulet (sleight of hand 20 )failing that he will take out his mace and try to snap the lock. Hopefully the amulet is a key of sorts and we try that first.

(Definitely enjoy Halloween here in Canada. @Potaido_, are you the grinch of Halloween? ;-) Okay, next bit might be a little bit of a stretch, but I'm trying to get Ollezall a little trinket for his troubles.)
Before Ollezall hands over the amulet, with his background in the faith and the planes he recognizes the symbol of Primus, the ruler of the plane of Mechanus. (Can Ollezall and Cerlinde roll for Arcana or Religion?)
In the crate marked "Private", Syd and Ollezall find what appears to be Fistandia's private stash... of smut. On the top of the pile is a book called "Passion on the Plains", which features a rather rugged, shirtless fellow with long flowing hair and some rather agitated horses milling about in the background. The barbarian woman accompanying him is striking, formidable, and looks vaguely disinterested. (Feel free to add some more titles to the pile!)
After perusing the collection, Syd and Ollezall work together to pick the lock on the chest. After failing to work it out with the dart or the amulet, they shrug at each other and Ollezall volunteers to take first crack at it with the mace. (Assuming you would like to break it open, attack roll with advantage, please.)
Syd feigns disinterest as he rummages the crate, discovering magazines titled Dwarven Delights, Titillating Tieflingsand Foxy Firbolgs. A few of the novels he makes mental note of, to return later in a less obvious moment, or perhaps to request them through special order at Haven's own magical bookstore run by a large female from a warrior tribe (he doesn't remember the name of the tribe, but he thinks there was a famous river named after them).
Among the novels: Dragonborn Desire: Flames of Passion
Lady Chatterley's Halfling Lover
Lord of the Flings
Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun
Aarakocra Dreams: Wings of Ecstasy, Uncomfortable Itchy Nests
Syd, after helping Ollezall help him do the helping with the locked chest, will help him to smash open the chest.
Ollezall looks at Syd's weapon, considers, and decides he likes his toes.
Ollezall takes his mace, one hand near the head and another near the end of the handle. Ollezall swings the mace up and behind him, finally bringing the mace down, letting his top hand slip to the base of the handle as the mace curves down in its arc towards the lock.

Ollezall stops reading titles and drops the last book; feeling sick, Ollezall steps away from the smut chest. " Some of fistandia's tastes are a little too advanced for me haha, I might leave this to a veteran Syd".
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cerlinde inspects the amulet with help 24 arcana or religion
She doesn’t seem impressed by the book stash, picking up a book titled “the best of horse and man; adventures in love with a centaur” before quickly dropping it.
It turns out that Fistandia is quite depraved, with her collection of smut spanning a vast array of subgenres. I suppose it must have gotten lonely in the mansion between visits from her apparent paramour, Freyot. (Really above and beyond there everyone, give yourselves Inspiration. Cerlinde, thanks for pitching in while staying in character :-)
Excellent form from Ollezall as his strike splinters the chest and cracks the lock. (He must have a background in splitting wood, such a satifsying activity.) Shards of wood are flung harmlessly about, but the party's attention is captured by the sight of gold. There is about 250 gp worth of coin lying amidst the remnants of the chest.
Mohdrak lifts the flail and gives it a few tentative swings. Surprisingly perhaps, it is excellently balanced and the book portion seems to have hardened to an almost metallic state. An unusual item to be sure, but effective nonetheless. With this transformation, Mohdrak has an idea that the book flail may have retained some of its enchantment in its new, martial form.
Cerlinde and Ollezall ponder the amulet further, and are collectively able to recall that the prime feature of Mechanus is a slavish devotion to order. Magic associated with that realm is not well understood, but generally has to do with probability and balance. With her glasses, Cerlinde is able to discern that the door on the face of the amulet is opened with a recessed switch on the bottom of it, which reveals an incredibly tiny and intricate set of gears within. The gears are in constant motion.
(LOL 102 ways to use mage hand, Clerical error, and Forbidden mimics were definitely my favorites)
(Edit - after 17 hrs of silence: guess everyone had to go bleach their eyeballs after that smutfest ;)
(Haha, yeah. Although if everyone's had as hectic an evening and morning as I've had, I wouldn't expect any posts either. Ugh. Can only go up from here. Come on team, we're in the home stretch, let's get the hell out of this mansion and bring all this sweet, sweet knowledge back to Haven!)
