Ignoring Avarice, Mulligan and the room for a moment, Varan approaches the apparition in the poison mist. He is aware this a trick but he embraces the shame and the pain in a fit of masochism. You think to judge me, jailor? To torment me? You don't know a thing about me yet. No one but I will ever stand in judgement over my mistakes, he thinks. Tears well in his eyes... from the noxious gas, no doubt.
(Does the vision have substance? After a full round kneeling beside the vision and watching it choke on the poison (choking right along himself) Varan will reach out for the crystal pendant.)

Though terrified, Keyleth strings her bow and sends an arrow into the blood duplicate of Ragnar. It launches into the amorphous blood and tears clean through, spraying blood over the wall behind. Ragnar raises a fist and sends out a pulse of commanding energy - while Wulgar resists the blow, Keyleth's duplicate seems to freeze. Wulgar takes two swipes, one at each of Ragnar's and his own duplicate - while rangaR parries the blow, the axe carves a devastating blow into Wulgar. Blood sloughs on the ground as the duplicate growls in anger.
rangaR mutters a curse in the air - a spiritual weapon hovers around Keyleth and makes a strike as Ragnar does the same. Movement: none. Action: two attacks with a [Tooltip Not Found] longsword against Wulgar. Attack 1: 12 Damage: 14 plus 1 cold damage. Attack 2: 16 Damage: 14 plus 6 cold damage. The fear drains out of Keyleth as quickly as it flooded her, and she deftly dodges rangaR's spiritual weapon. She then storms up to the replica of the human, taking two swipes at him--one with each shortsword. (Movement: one square right, one square up)
Ragnar's opportunistic strike against ragluW punctures through the hardened blood-like scales surrounding the towering figure - though his match proves more difficult to injure as it parries each of his blows with surprising ease, almost as if it knew how the creature it was created from fights.
Keyleth, however, uses the opportunity to dart in and make two devastating strikes with her shortsword - carving neatly to the bloodied figure. Ragnar's duplicate lets out a soundless cough before slouching over and collapsing into a downpour of blood which promptly splashes on the stone ground below. Wulgar - 17 rangaR - 15 htelyeK - 14 ragluW - 12 Keyleth - 11 Ragnar - 11
In the other room, Mulligan attempts to let a pulse of dispelling magic course through the air - though the spell has no effect.
Avarice, in the meanwhile, eyes closed, stumbles towards where the walls should be with hands extended - and upon reaching it, he feels something very different than the usual, cold stone; an almost splintery material which resembles wood carved in the shape of the door can be felt, a handle included.
Varan pushes forwards into the mist near the choking woman. As he reaches out, her desperate, distraught, familiar face turns towards Varan - and she pulls back, scrambling across the floor. "You. What are you here for? To torture my soul as you did in life?" she gasps. The topaz around her neck shines with yellow light.
"I think I´ve perhaps found a way out of here. But it is possible that you have to find your own way out. Close your eyes and inhale the poisonous gas and I think you will be able to find a door in the wall, hopefully leading out of here. I wouldn´t pretend to trust you two much yet but I still believe that we will have a greater chance of getting out of here if we work together." Avarice says loudly before cautiosly trying the handle of the door.
Close my eyes? Mulligan would think to himself. Balls to that! Mulligan quickly moves over to where Avarice is with every intention of pushing through the door immediately after him. "C'mon, you! You hear the man? We're getting out of here!"

Varan is silent for a long while after the apparition speaks to him. Finally, ignoring the others in the room, he answers. His voice is flat and cold. "Your husband made a powerful enemy. The kind of enemy for which it is nothing at all to send a man like me to end a man like him. True, your name wasn't on the contract... but plenty of other contractors are less careful then myself. You could have just as easily fallen to another's hand than to mine. And even if not, you'd be a widow to a forsaken man... untouchable and alone. Avarice pushes down on the wooden handle he blindly felt for - and, with a creak of wood, the door gives way. Taking a single step beyond the doorway reveals the mist to be absent, judging by the clean air Avarice inhales; and, suddenly, as soon as he crossed that barrier, the door seems to instantaneously vanish as if it never was there. Opening his eyes, Avarice would see the same room the party entered - rug moved aside, driftglobe floating in the air; with one, minor change - one of the six torches along the walls glows a vibrant green.
Mulligan, with your eyes open, you hear Avarice's voice - yet you don't see him. You swear you see a shape in the mist vaguely form into his shape and you rush towards it, but to no avail. You can't seem to find Avarice anywhere.
Varan - the vision you see continues to retch and cough, struggling to stay as far from Varan as possible. "Haunt each other no more? No, Varan - as it stands, my soul trapped in this fog will not match the nightmares you have had, and will have. "Yes, we did it Vorax...but where are the others?" Avarice says as he realizes he is alone in the chamber they all woke up. Investigation with help from Vorax to search the room for whichever gems are still there: 15 (I guess the emerald is in the slot since Varan was the last to leave this chamber?)
"So, I recall the emerald was slotted in when I was teleported to the chamber with the green poison gas and now one of the torches glows green. Since Wulgar, Ragnar and Keyleth aren´t here they are probably in one or more of the other chambers being tested right now. Each gem will probably take us to a different chamber with a test related to it´s color, and the six torches suggests there are six such chambers. But we only found an azure gemstone, a ruby, an emerald and an amethyst. That would leave us two gemstones short?" Avarice says, sharing his thoughts with his familiar. "Let´s wait here and hope the others return from their tests." He adds and takes a seat by one of the pillars.
The vision remains - perpetually just out of Varan's reach. The glow in the topaz begins to fade. "You are the one who killed me, Varan. You are responsible for your situation - and for the lives of those around you. I cannot forgive you and pass beyond the veil you have delivered me to until you forgive yourself."
Damage for this round will be rolled once Mulligan posts.
htelyeK Deception check (Insightful Fighting, contested against a 24 (Keyleth's Reliable Talent)): 4
The real Keyleth lunges forth just as her duplicate begins to ready itself in a parrying stance - Keyleth, however, recognizes her own defensive style and intuits the best way to slip her shortsword through her copy's ribs; with one, singular motion, Keyleth's duplicate collapses into another pile of blood.
The room quiets - murky blood filling the room to around ankle height. Blood drips from the walls and even ceiling in aftermath at the conflict; the scent of iron hangs in the air. The patch where Keyleth's duplicate collapsed seems to pulse with a silvery light, as if something is submerged.
The first room is nearly identical to how you left it, Avarice. The emerald has disappeared where it was slotted in - the ruby, as well, is absent, leaving the amethyst and the aquamarine gemstone remaining.
Varan gives legitimate consideration to the spectre's words. At last he replies, "You would have me forgive myself? What then? I am a being possessed of monstrous and supernatural power. I make a living doing what I do well... what I was born with an innate talent to do. The fact that I judge myself for my failures isn't some flaw. It's what separates me from a wanton killer or beast. It would be the easiest thing in the world to forgive myself. Any monster can do that. To hand wave a failure away as fate, or beyond my control. And then it would be so much easier to forgive myself the next time... and the next time... until I am choking all the land in poison and building thrones of the bodies of saints and sinners alike."
"No. Killing you was an error. One which - if I survive - I will strive to learn from. To never repeat. But not something I will forgive myself for. If you require that of me, then we have nothing more to discuss here. If you are indeed her spirit, and not some sick illusion, I... am sorry... you continue to linger in torment."
With that, Varan will turn away and try to see what Avarice and Mulligan have found. Something about closing your eyes?
