I am a new GM looking to start a regular online gaming group of 4 players who love Critical Role/Matt Mercer's world and 5e DnD. I think it's important for players to know Mercer's world but it's not a deal-breaker if you don't. The campaign will be essentially vignettes tied together to form a greater overarching story. Your PC will level up with the pace of the game or time jump turning downtime to learn a new skill or possibly study/train to multi-class. I am asking for role players, not just dice rollers. I would like to learn how to be a great GM and grow stronger with my understanding of rules. As a player, you can be a seasoned player or recently introduced to the game! You just need to be considerate to my bumbling as a new GM.

Story PC apps:
You'll be starting as an already assembled party on route to Stillben along the Lucian Coast. As a part of an already established group of adventures seeking employment, the expectation will be you have either become stalwart friends but can be business partners with a begrudging appreciation for one another. The key beingyou all want to be a part of this group and want to work together to solve problems to see Exandria, please your patron/divine source of magic, or get coin. You can decide how long you've been together as well as your motivations for adventuring.
The party will begin en route to Stillben 60 years after Vox Machina and 40 years after Mighty Nien. Favorite Exandrian: Victor, the black powder merchant
Major goal: To reverse the kenku curse, on himself first, and his flock second
Backstory:
Screech:
Kenku monk
When he was just a hatchling, Screech’s flock was hired by a monastery to make multiple copies of all of their manuscripts. Because of the length of time needed to complete this task, Screech grew up in the monastery. Brother Clavor, the monk who oversaw the kenku’s project, spoke in a very high pitched voice. When Screech first started to repeat things that Brother Clavor said, he repeated them in a slightly higher pitch than even Brother Clavor spoke. This of course was a source of amusement to the other monks, who soon took the young kenku under wing.
As the young bird grew up, he began to imitate the monks in a lot of their activities, learning their martial arts and helping out in their infirmary. The various monks encouraged him to learn these activities, and began to teach Screech many of the skills they knew.
As the young kenku matured, he continued to repeat what he’d heard back in a slightly higher pitch than the original speaker. As he became able to assist in copying the manuscripts owned by the monastery, Screech started helping his tribe out with that task. One of the manuscripts Screech copied told the story of a kenku named Dragon Roar. Dragon Roar was able to undertake a series of tasks to prove that he was worthy of having the species curses removed. At the end of this tale, Dragon Roar recovered both his wings and his voice, although the manuscript that Screech copied did not say what entity reversed the curse.
Screech has become obsessed with proving himself worthy of having the curse removed. When the abbot requests that Screech deliver some of the copied manuscripts to a library in Stillben, the young kenku was more than willing to undertake this task. With a list of places mentioned in the story of Dragon Roar, Screech headed toward Stillben, eager to see what the future had in store for him.
I have never watched Critical Role but I do have access to the book on here.

Name: Cagadim
Race: Aasimar
Class: Bard
Favourite Exandrian: N/A
Background: Sage
Major Goal: To offer protection and knowledge to those who would seek it.
Backstory:
Cagadim was born many years ago, he is over one hundred years old. Though no one knows his true age anymore. He spent many years learning the lore of Exandria, scouring manuscripts, studying scrolls, and listening to the greatest experts in the world. Cagadim himself is now somewhat of an expert in many subjects, and he offers his knowledge to those who would seek it.
Major Goal: Money! Specifically enough money to give his Daughter a comfortable life.
Backstory:
Seasoned in combat at a relatively young age, Atask began his life as a merc to pay off gambling debts after finding out he had a child on the way. Turns out, he was quite good at fighting due to his natural athletic capabilities, quick wit when dealing with opponents and getting in their heads. Strong enough to charge in, but smart enough to avoid fights destined for defeat, Atask became an adequate battlefield commander, usually of smaller groups of 10 or so. A proud father of a wonderful 5 year old, he resents his necessary time away from her, and hopes to score big a few more times before settling down with his loves in Westruun. He collects knick knacks and things to bring back to his daughter as he hopes to teach her as much about the world as he can.

I have just begun watching Critical Role so I am not an expert on Exandria, but I would love to learn more about the world by playing in it.
Name: Nelyna Ravenguard
Race: High Elf
Class: Wizard
Ability Scores: 101513161516
Biggest ambition for your PC: To find an artifact or relic of great power in order to earn her master's respect.
Favorite Exandrian: N/A
Brief backstory: Having an aptitude for wizardly studies from a young age, Nelyna's family gladly gave her to the wizard Neralmo to be his ward and apprentice. She hasn't seen her family in years and service to Neralmo and the study of magic has been all she's really known. Neralmo has been known to take an interest in magical artifacts, curses, and the like, but instead of doing the dirty work himself, he prefers to send his apprentices out on expeditions. Nelyna prides herself on being his most prized apprentice so she usually gets the most exciting, and the most rewarding, jobs.
It was during one such job, though, that everything went awry, and Nelyna's career as a wizard, and her life, were nearly cut short. She and a small group of fellow adventurers had traveled to the tomb of a renowned wizard, searching for his amulet, which was said to have magnificent powers. The tomb was full of undead, but they proved to be short work for Nelyna and her companions. The amulet lay in the tomb's central chamber, inside the sarcophagus of the great wizard, Tharandur. It wasn't until they breached the sarcophagus' seal to retrieve the amulet that everything quickly turned to chaos. Tharandur was a powerful and dangerous lich! Nelyna barely escaped the tomb with her life. Both of her companions were slaughtered, and she was unable to retrieve the amulet. Returning to her master in disgrace, Neralmo expressed his disappointment with her but ensured that she would be able to get back in his good graces if she succeeds in her next mission.
His biggest ambition: To prove himself as a contributing member of society
Fav Exandrian: Vax/Vex
Backstory: Life is not easy in Tal'dorei, especially for someone who displays darker than normal skin. Remath has encountered racism at every turn simply because of the color of his skin. The child of a doomed affair between a Drow noble and a human slave, he has been on his own most of his life. Scavenging what he can from both cities and forests. All he wants to do is to be able to shoe his father, who he has never met, that he is worthy, of what, he has no idea.

Name: Koda
Race: Human
Class: Death Cleric of Vesh
Ambition: Find my mother who disappeared saying she had a duty she was sworn to do.
Fav Exandrian: Keyleth, she is just so entertaining
Backstory: Koda grew up in the small town of Drynna. His family came form a long line of guards who had helped defend the city for decades. Thora, Koda's mother, was even known to have been trained in Whitestone and was a local hero for driving a Catoblepas out of the nearby lake. Koda never really followed in his family's footsteps. Instead, he often ran off into the city and began to run around with a small gang. They called themselves the Children of the Siren and wore crimson rings on chains around their necks. As he got older, he began to see a strange woman at the edges of his sight. She had long purple hair, unnaturally long arms, and fingers that ended in claw-like nails. Her eyes were a pale white with no iris. At first he thought it was just his imagination but as it began to happen more and more, he began to worry. When he told Thora, she looked concerned. She began to try and teach Koda how to defend himself and fight. Where before, she had been an aloof and busy woman who didn't have time for him, she started to make time for him. She would often take Koda out of the city to practice against the beasts of the Parchwood Timberlands. But even in the woods, Koda would see the woman, watching him. Koda tried to ignore her and focused on training with his mother. But one day Thora disappeared in the night, leaving behind a note and a package. The note read, “I’m sorry—there is a duty I am sworn to do. You must protect yourself while I am gone." In the package, Koda found his mother's maul. Despite asking everywhere, no one knew where Thora had gone other than she was seen leaving the city and headed south. A few years passed and as Koda was hanging out with the Children of the Siren in their hideout, he heard a blood curdling scream. The gang turned and saw the strange woman who had been following Koda. She was standing with her hand through one of their members. Before the Children could blink she was upon them. She killed all of them but Koda. When she reached him, she laid with him before vanishing. As she disappeared, she whispered, "You are the chosen of Vesh, I will watch over you for life." When Koda next awoke, he found that he had some strange magic within himself. Knowing he would be suspected of the murder of the Children of the Siren, he fled the city. Determined to find his mother, as she was the only one he knew of who he thought could help him, he began to make his way south, following in her footsteps.
