In recognition of the spooky season, I'm itching to run Curse of Strahd. For those unfamiliar, it's a horror adventure set in the land of Barovia where heroes try to stop the titular character from turning an innocent woman into a vampire, among other things.
There are going to be some elements that will be different in this campaign - for those who've played before. For example, if the group goes to Death House the group will learn that the children Rose, Thorn and their baby sister are still alive and grown-up.
I'm looking for six players with the following guidelines
- Level 3
- Stats: Point Buy, SA, or roll - reroll ones
- Name
- Race and Class/Subclass (All PC races and classes are allowed. If you've got Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, I encourage you to use it, especially if you want to come from a different Dread Domain. If you want to play a Vistani or native Barovian that's cool too. Also being a native Barovian doesn't mean you only have to play a human. You could say your parents were trapped here by the Mists.)
- Background
- Backstory. It can be short or long. Depending on your origin, it may or may not come into play.
- Ravenloft is a horror game and there's a lot of scary stuff. If there's something that triggers you, please let me know. We're here to have fun.
Please keep character applications in the thread.
Deadline for character creation is Sept. 15. I'm hoping to start this on Sept. 17.
Backstory: Seraphine is a mute, Human Wildfire Druid, who uses a mixture of her spells and spirits to aid her in communicating. She is part of a tribe of protectors where one person in each generation, is tasked to protect the Volcano and the land surrounding it. She was chosen for this duty and was trained in the way of magical arts to do so. When she turned 25, she was sent to the Volcano to ensure that it, and the land surrounding it continues to thrive. Her time there has shown her that even in death and destruction, life can be introduced.
During her time there, she's come across a manor of characters, from Dwarves to Dragonborns, and has learned of a land that is in need of rebalancing. She tried to ignore it for some time as protecting the land she grew up in was her task, however, she could not sit idly by any longer thinking that the possibility of innocent creatures were dying, so she set out, leaving her post, to find this place. This leads her to... ((Insert intro town or location to campaign here. I know the campaign technically starts in Daggerford, but we can start somewhere else.))

Okay so I am looking at Van Richten’s and I am drawn to being a hexblood. I like the idea of my parents having made a deal with a hag. So that immediately leads me to believe that I myself would be susceptible to making deals and am a warlock. Of course I am really enjoying looking at Van Richten’s and I am drawn to that patron being undead. If it doesn’t make as much sense or there is too much doubling down there I appreciate and would like some input on what would be a good patron for a hexblood Barovian.

Backstory:Growing up as an urchin in Barovia I always wanted more and felt like I was destined for greatness. Looking to Ravenloft Castle with envy I swore that one day I would have as much, or more. The offer for greatness came along from the dracolich Dragotha and before I could consider the options I had powers to command and felt confident enough to take on the whole realm. Name: Grégoire de Fronsac Race: Human (variant) Class: Warlock (hexblade) Background: Investigator Backstory: Born to a wealthy merchant in Arabel, Grégoire could have chosen a quiet life in the city, but chose a different path. When he came of age he joined his uncle Rudolph in Suzail, assisting him in his investigations, quelling sinister eldritch threats to Cormyr. Recently these investigations lead them to the desolate and ruined city of Tilverton where young Grégoire came upon a sentient jet black blade of netherese origin, shadows flitting about it. An eerie voice spoke out in Grégoires mind luring him into a pact, serving Grégoire in his hunt for evil horror whilst sated with the blood of these creatures. Now his uncle Rudolph has retired but Grégoire still travels Faerûn in search of mysteries to solve and horrors to defeat.
Background: From the wilds of Thoros, Feli has plied his trade as a soldier of fortune for a decade. While returning from a lengthy contract, his ship was lost, and pulled through a whirlpool. Hello! I am interested in playing :) I have a Human Twilight Cleric I'd love to play.
- Level 3
STR 8, DEX 14, CON 14, INT 12, WIS 17, CHA 12
- Estelle Polaire
- Human Cleric (Twilight Domain), worships Selune
- Background: Sage
- Backstory: Born and raised in Waterdeep along the coast, Estelle and her family have deep ties to the sea. They live in a lighthouse, which her father (a retired sailor) operates. Her mother runs a nearby inn. She has three older brothers, all sailors. Eight months ago, her middle brother was lost at sea - his entire vessel disappeared. He was the best sailor of them all, and saved Estelle from drowning as a young child. Estelle is convinced he is alive somewhere, and hopes to find him. She is interested in astronomy, being from a family of navigators. She doesn't want to be a sailor like the rest of her family, but a scholar. She loves plotting star charts and studying the skies. She has been the pupil of a brilliant astronomer who lives in the city. She is addicted to caffeine and books and is a total night owl. As the baby of the family, she wants to prove herself and sometimes feels guilty for not following the path of her brothers in becoming a sailor. She is actually a bit fearful of water, after almost drowning as a child. She wants more than anything to find her brother, and has spent the past 8 months studying his sailing route and trying to solve the mystery of his disappearance.
Okay, I see you encouraging using a race from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, so let's do that.

Name: Bral Dirnan Race: Dhampir Class: Monk/Way of the Kensei
Background: Soldier
Backstory:
Bral's father belonged to a secret organisation, and sent his mother into hiding at a convent when she was pregnant with Bral. When Bral Dirnan's mother went into labour, she was attacked a vampire. His mother died in the attack, but Bral was forever changed. However, when the vampire tried to attack Bral, the vampire was driven away. Bral's life was spared, but his mother died from her wounds. Bral grew up in the convent, protected by the sisters at the convent.
As a young man, Bral encountered a veteran vampire slayer who was being pursued by a group of vampires. Bral acted quickly and saved the vampire slayer from the vampires, and brought him to the convent. Here the sisters healed vampire slayer's wounds and the vampire slayer learnt of Bral's nature as a dhampir. Grateful for the young man's actions, the veteran vampire slayer decided to train Bral.
Hi there. I'd love to play in this game. I once played in Curse of Strahd here on D&D Beyond, but it almost immediatley sputtered out. Here's my rogue with a little bit of healing support.
Ability scores: 111815121412
Name: Johnson H. "Jack" Treadwell, AKA "Doc"
Race: Variant Human
Class: Rogue (Thief Subclass)
Background: Faction Agent (for mechanics, flavor is a little different)
Backstory: Jack Treadwell grew up a poor kid on the streets of the big city, doing what he had to do to survive and put food in the mouths of his mother, his siblings, and himself. He was quick enough and smart enough to survive, and he became a sneaky good knife fighter who knew his way around picking pockets and locks alike. But when he accidentally killed a semi-important relation of a noble in a barroom brawl, he was given a choice: the noose or service in the army. The choice was easy.
Once in the military, he proved to have a surprising knack for medicine, quickly picking up on how to bind wounds, perhaps due to the knowledge of weak spots and organs he'd picked up from his many fights. He found it surprisingly satisfying work, actually helping people who were hurt rather than doing the hurting (though he was always able to fight or slip his way out of nasty battlefield situations). Even when he'd served his time, he found himself opting to stay in the military for several years as a medic.
Eventually, the years of combat (and the occasional injury) took their toll on him mentally and physically and he retired. After his time in war, he wanted only to settle down to a "normal" life where he could put up his "healer" signa and use his basic medical skills to make a living and perhaps raise a family. He was glad that his criminal past was behind him...at least for a time.
Unfortunately, an organized crime family in the city was moving in on his sister's business, a small inn in the poor neighborhood where he lived. She was being forced to pay exorbitant protection money and was regularly being threatened with arson and violence to her and her staff. Jack knew some of these figures from his past and struck a bargain. In effect, he became their go-to healer, their "mob doctor." It meant being woken in the middle of the night to work on various thugs and thieves, and he was not pleased with this new existence.
Then, due to no fault of Jack's, the crime boss's son died on the operating table. Jack immediately became a marked man. He recently packed up some supplies, weapons, money, etc. and hit the road, hoping to disappear into a small town somewhere far away. He used both his criminal and military connections to find safe houses as he worked to fade away. Then, one night on the road, he found himself in a strange, misty land...

- Race and Class/Subclass: Half-Orc (Father was a Barovian Human, her mother was an orc) Monk/Drunken Master
- Noble
- Backstory: Tiri was the 2nd born of the Autumnspell family. Her father, Lord Autumnspell, had recently gained his nobility through his winemaking. Her mother was an orc named Alan who found herself in Barovia after getting lost in the mists, her father found her, housed her, and romance blossomed. Tiri grew up feeling sour about her position as the 2nd born, seeing her older brother being the heir of the Autumnspell fortune and business. Her childhood was filled with hijinks, reveling, and mischief. Though she was loved by her family, they did not like the way their daughter acted and thought she lacked a certain discipline; also setting a bad example for her younger sister. They sent her to work out in the fields. There she met several Vistani, one of which was an old, drunken, yet-wise supervisor named Genjo. Genjo taught Tiri how to have fun, but also how to moderate her feelings and see that nobility isn't about power and it is not the end of the world. He also taught her self-defense through his style of drunken boxing. Her family loved her and she started a relationship with the heir of a neighboring farm close-by.
Her time with the vistani and spending more time with her family and significant other improved Tiri's outlook on life and attitude. All was well until the Autumnspell home was under attack by the creatures of the night. Many were injured, with Lord and Lady Autumnspell being the most horrid. Though Tiri was unharmed, her mother passed away from her diseased wounds while her father fled as a newly made vampire. Tiri and her brother attempted to find her father, but she was badly wounded in the travels which left a horrid scar upon her neck, leaving the two to flee. The older brother left to run the farm in its battered state was hard on the siblings and workers. Tiri also eventually broke off her relationship with her love in grief that his heart grew greedy and cold; he cared more for the coin than love. Tiri turned to drinking wine for comfort.
A month later, with a spark in her eyes and inspiration from her sister, Tiri set out into the world with bottle in-hand, ready to avenge her family and maybe have a good time.

Name: Mia Everstied
Stats: Ability scores: 11139101010
Race: Human
Class: Paladin of Redemption
Background: Noble
Backstory: Mia grew up in Kalakeri, a dread domain constantly at war. Her family were nobles in the service of the dreadlord Ramya, the rightful ruler who was murdered by her siblings. The Everstied's have been personal guards of the mahrana, the ruler of the Vasavadan dynasty. Mia grew up with her older brother being trained to ride into battle alongside Ramya. Despite Mia training as hard as she could, her prodigy of a brother was always better. He received all of the attention and praise. Even the mahrana payed attention to him, promising him the opportunity to be her right hand man. When the family blade was passed onto her brother and he ascended to join the mahrana, Mia was sent to a far away town, Banyan, to try and hold it against the Ramya's siblings. For the first time in her life, Mia was away from the capital and her noble family. In Banyan, she saw what her lord's eternal conflict was doing. She began to question if she was doing the right thing. One day, her older brother, Elias, came to support her forces in an attack on the traitors. When he arrived, Mia was shocked. Her brother had fallen in combat and been raised as a wight to continue fighting for Ramya. There was nothing left of Elias in the body other than his skill with a blade. Unable to support Ramya's cause anymore, Mia fled. Knowing that if she was caught, her skull would join the Tower of Traitors, Mia attempted to leave Kalakeri. She ran for the Mists having heard of other places beyond them. After hours of wandering in the strange inky darkness, she stumbled out into Barovia.
- Race and Class/Subclass: Levistus Tiefling Celestial Warlock 3
- Background: Hermit
- Backstory:
"Yes, it can be done... But it won't be easy. A spell exists, one of the most powerful and difficult, called True Polymorph. A lifetime of service might earn you access to such lore, but the odds against you are... overwhelming." The deva has been taking pains to dissuade him from entering service of the Celestial Host - after it learned of the reason. He smiled in response. "If I can be rid of these horns and tainted blood and enter into the heavens of good with my head held on high, it would be worth it. I know it won't be easy. Nothing worth having is ever easy. However slim my chances may be, I want to one day become a celestial myself." And so, a deal was made and a pact was forged.
His patron's tasks have taken him to deep burrows and forbidden dungeons, there to confront evil which was its eternal target, and he has faced dangers greater than most adventurers would as a result, but the rewards have been worth it to his mind. And always, his dream was near to his thoughts, to shed his half demon form and become an angel...

It's rumored the head village elder and famous sorceress, Amella Taragoš, of Krezk is their maternal grandmother but that's just rumors. Cinder had a happy childhood living with their adoptive family helping in their family's forge and farrier on the outskirts of Krezk commune rarely coming into contact with the clutches of Strahd! It wasn't until Cinder's betrothed was stolen away in the night did they wander nearer to Ravenloft seeking those who stole their love away!
- Race and Class/Subclass : Reborn - Barbarian (Wild Magic)
- Background: Haunted One
- Backstory:
Runlyn is from Mordent, one of the victims of the Apparatus. The soul-rending device effected everyone in some way. Runlyn has only the most surface memory of these events surrounding Mordent and the wicked Lord Godefroy. What he does know: he’s not in his right body. He’s not supposed to be in a body at all. This body has something wrong with it. Other spirits sense it as well.
Runlyn has escaped the longing, envious spirits of Mordent, and made it to Barovia. He doesn’t know what horrors lurk there, only that he must be both bold, and careful in equal measure…
basically, I want to reflavor the Wild Magic as ghostly powers. Runlyn would like to put his memories back together, but finds them a bit overwhelming when he tries to examine them. He finds comfort in a cape wrapped around his shoulders, clutching it tightly in uncomfortable circumstances. I also grabbed the Gathered Whispers dark gift as a neat way to incorporate ghosts being able to see him for what he is, although I’d be down for changing that to another gift if you think another might be more appropriate.

- Backstory. A cook drafted into the Falkovnian military to help fight the endless hordes of undead. Searching for survivors after an invasion, he stumbled across an abandoned monastery and found an ancient text teaching specialized techniques to use against the undead. Gathering a small group of other fighters, he taught them some of the techniques and led them during the next battle. His small unit managed to drive off the horde to defend an outlying village. After the battle, the villagers begged him to lead them away from this accursed land. He agreed, but the Falkovnian leadership found out and sent troops to arrest him. He rushed the village's departure and though he managed to get the others into the mist safely, he was separated, and found himself in a new land, another one infested with undead, another where his abilities would be needed.

Name: Mikmek
Race/Class: Kobold Wizard (Chronurgy)
Background: Far Traveler
Backstory: Mikmek comes from the Underdark equivalent of a domain of dread, his clan having been in the land when it was pulled in by the dark powers. Due to their underground home they were relatively unaffected at first, able to continue their mining in peace for a time. Eventually though they cleared out their mines and were forced to move towards the surface as they found that room had run out due to the new boundaries of the realm. It was at this time they were brought under the heal of the domain's master.
It was under the service of the lord that Mikmek was born, his clan being used to serve various roles due to their sheer number and quick birth rate. Due to showing higher intelligence at a young age he was separated from the rest of the young kobolds and sent to learn magic under the strict control of a master. Here every waking moment was used to practice the arcane arts, each student being given a different school to study. For his part Mikmek was taught to affect the ebb and flow of time, the dark lord ordering users of this magic to find a way to reverse it if possible.
Unfortunately for lord of the domain, others in the same position wanted such magic for themselves and had their spies looking to learn it one way or another. In one case they raided the place where wizards were being taught and offered to free those kept there, Mikmek agreeing and fleeing with them. What happened next was blur as he did not remember much about the journey through the Mists, merely finding himself in a new domain, Barovia.

Stats: Ability scores: 11 13 9 10 10 10

- Name: Runlyn https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/nschrock/characters/57952666

- Ravenloft is a horror game and there's a lot of scary stuff. If there's something that triggers you, please let me know. Should be good.
