"I can't talk for the others but certainly the townmasters pleas to the surrounding areas for help were what brought us here, and after having a taste of what that dragon is capable of I think it's our duty to help any way we can." Ruby stands up as though trying to rouse the crowd into joining in on the expidition but is met by a majority of turned faces and sullen looks.
"Here boy, if you're going out into the wild you may need someone that can get there way into tight spots and out of tighter" an old man picks his head out of his tankard, brushing the foam out of his raggedy beard and moustache. "Pete's the name, drinking may be my game but it doesn't affect my other abilities none whatsoever."
You head out of the Inn making your way towards the townmaster's house to inform him of the news. As you enter the town square you spot Adabra and Qhuarrk treating more of the wounded and Agmar setting his axe on the ice trying to break free any bodies encassed in the ice left behind. Passing by the townmasters hall, you spot the quest board appears to have been rebuilt and a couple of fresh postings have been made.
At Harbin Wester's house, you knock on the door and hear a sharp shriek come from inside followed by the muffled speech of what you assume must be Harbin "If you’re a dragon, know that I’m far too thin and bony to make a good meal!"
"I agree Ruby, if we can help, we should." Haughlin smiles.
"Pleased to meet you Pete, I've travelled with a dwarf long enough to know that drink and competence aren't mutually exclusive, I welcome your aid!" Haughlin replies, with another smile.
As he walks past his friends, he gives them a nod.
At the town master's hall, Haughlin hears the screech from inside and his face drops slightly. He leans closer to the door and, raising his voice slightly, speaks, "Master Harbin, if I were a dragon, I doubt I'd have knocked so politely. It's Haughlin Gaale, I'm here to report on Midwife Adabra. May I come in?"
“That’s just what a dragon would say! I heard they can change shapes and look like us! No I don’t think I will be opening this door thank you very much!”. Harbin shouts through the door, you get the feeling that he won’t be convinced to come out or let anyone in.
”Good heavens you managed to convince her to come back? You have my and the towns thanks, she will prove a great asset!” You hear muffled footsteps receding into the building, after a minute or two the foot steps start to get louder again and you can hear Harbin is a little out of breath “here for your trouble.” Slowly gold pieces start appearing in the gap under the door. ((Gain 25gp and level up))
"My apologies for being flippant sir, I assure you I am who I say. However, I respect your caution." Haughlin speaks into the wood of the door, slightly flustered by the ridiculousness of the situation.
"We did convince her to return, if we hadn't already, I imagine the appearance of the Dragon in the skies above the town would have brought her back," he continues, slowly crouching to pick up the coins slotted under the door. "If you won't open the door for others, please consider opening it for Adabra when she comes by. I suggested she come to you with the suggestion of aid to continue her work, I imagine it will be of more importance now."
He finished picking up the coins and stows then in the pouch on his belt, "My thanks. Despite current events, you're still a man of your word, I respect that. I believe the other task you gave us is more pressing than ever, I'll report back once I return from Gnomengarde."
Haughlin turns from the door with a small sigh. After a moment a small smile appears on his face, "We need to move quickly, to Gnomengarde."
"Ah yes, Gnomengarde! Shouldn't take you long to get there, about 15 miles South East from Adabra's windmill. Be sure to get something to deal with that dragon now. Kings Gnerkli and Korboz have been good friends to us in the past, I'm certain they would help again in our time of need." Harbin shouts through the door as you turn and leave.
Assuming you leave straight away for Gnomengarde:
Your travels are fairly uneventful, choosing to follow the same path you took to get to Umbrage Hill, you arrive at the windmill by early-afternoon and stop to take camp for a short while allowing the horses to rest and regain their strength. You do note on arrival that the carcass of the manticore is where you left it, although the local carrion have started to pick it apart. After a short break within the windmill you are ready to leave again. To add a distinct reminder on your purpose you hear in the distance the unmistakable roar of the roaming dragon off in the distance.
"Look over there!" Ruby points off to the North where you can just make out the dragon flying high in the sky "It looks like it must be over the trail now, by the gods I hope it passed by Phandalin, I don't think they would survive another attack so soon."
Following the foothills of the Sword mountains, you spot a small stream cutting into the side. You follow the stream uphill to the base of the mountain range, where waterfall erosion has carved out a natural concavity. The roaring waterfall creates a cloud of mist as it plunges into a shallow pool of water, within which rise two small islands covered with two-foot-tall red, green, and purple mushrooms.
Several cave openings overlook the pool from rocky ledges twenty to thirty feet above. The mountain blocks any sunlight from reaching this place.
There are 5 openings in total all bar one are steep cliff faces.
any thoughts on how to enter? for clarification, all 20ft entrances are steep cliffs along with the 30ft one on the near side. The 30ft entrance on the far side of the stream has a path leading up the mountain face. From what your vantage point there does not appear to be doors on any of the entrances.
"I've got an idea. Ruby, you look the strongest out of the four of us. If I can get you up there," Haughlin points at the western 30ft high cliff, "Could you tether a rose and pull the rest of us up? Obviously we can all help with the pulling once we're up?" He smiles at his dwarven companion as he speaks.
"I don't know much about the magic I've recently come into possession of, but I'm fairly sure I can levitate you up there, then we sort the rope?" He continues, lightly scratching his chin, looking up at the ledge above them.
*If Ruby agrees, Haughlin will cast Levitate on her, raising her up to the ledge over two turns, then will release her once she's safe on the ledge*
“Ah can certainly try pal, as long as we can find somethin’ to secure the rope to it should work”. Ruby looks up the cliff face not daunted in the slightest. “Don’t think I’ve ever been dangled in the sky by someone before”. She gives a mighty chuckle as she braces herself.

Pete and Donabella stand at the side of you watching with wide eyes as the dwarf slowly lifts into the sky in front of them.

“First time I’ve tried this, so we’ll figure it out together,” Haughlin gives Ruby a friendly wink and a smile as he takes a step back.
He furrows his brow and bites his lower lip slightly as he concentrates. Stretching his upturned hands out in front of him, a wind billows around his feet, before a small wisp of wind shoots towards Ruby before billowing around her feet in a similar fashion.
The wind lifts her gently, rising her up above the others heads next to the steep cliff face.

“Oh dear, I don’t like this! I don’t like this one bit! A dwarf is not meant to leave the ground!” Ruby begins to panic when her feet come off the ground and starts to raise, flailing her arms and legs futilely as you raise her up.
As Haughlin begin the various components of the spell tiny, insubstantial notes of light appear from your hands and begin to circle Haughlin casting bright light all around him. With the second casting of the spell even more motes appear dancing all around Haughlin.(you now she’d bright light for 10ft and dim light for another 10ft)
Eventually Ruby stops panicking and resigns herself to being suspended in mid air and let’s put a huge sigh of relief as she lands on the top ledge. “I can’t find anything to tie to rope off up here but give me a minute and I’ll dig myself in and I’ll be your anchor” she shouts down to the rest of the party and shortly after the rope is thrown down.
Pickled Pete takes a long draw from his flask before gripping the rope and climbs the cliff with relative ease joining Ruby at the top. Donnabella is a little more hesitant when reaching for the rope and slowly ascends the cliff face, slipping a number of times clattering against the cliff face but with Ruby and Pete's help she manages to regain her footing and reach the top unscathed.
Haughlin climbs the cliff face with relative ease aided by Ruby and Pete pulling the rope up from the top. Atop the clif face you turn back to look over where you came from and can see the whole area. The waterfall to the South is producing clouds of mist as it plunges into the pool below. Within the pool there are two small islands filled to bursting with large mushrooms (around 2 foot tall) of varying colours, mainly red, green and purple. After the strange effects from your last attempts at spell casting get a better sense of the area around you and can feel strange magical energies surrounding the islands, pool and the cave system.
"Looks like we've come in the back door, so to speak" Pete shouting to be heard over the sound of rushing water coming from the waterfall. You turn to look into the caves and see the cave floors strewn with the remnants of old campfires, and 5 caves carved into the wall. The caves have been hewn from the solid rock and appear to be about 7ft tall and completely flat and lit with oil lanterns that are attached to the ceilings with an intricate system of ropes and pulleys.
Entering further into the caves you see one of the caves is actually a passage way further into the mountain side while the other 4 have been created as small sleeping areas with five small wooden cots crammed into each one. On closer inspection you see that some of the beds are occupied by sleeping Gnomes (2 in each cave) all appear to be sleeping soundly over the racket caused by the waterfall.
Haughlin looks around the cavern from the entrance then turns back to his companions.
He ushers them closer to him, and speaks just loudly enough to be heard over the crashing water, but hopefully not loud enough to wake the inhabitants, “I think you’re right Pete, feels like we’ve snuck in through a bedroom window,” he says with mild concern.
”We’re here for diplomacy, not for deception, it would feel wrong to sneak out whilst they sleep. I think I should attempt to wake them, explain how we came to be here and apologise for the intrusion. If anyone had any other ideas, I’m all ears.”
“If ye ask me I think there asking for it, who leaves an entrance like that with no door? Sure there might have been a hefty cliff but that don’t stop nobody these days, I say we just move on if we bump into anyone else just explain the misunderstanding” Pete shouts over the racket, looking round the room checking on the gnomes, unaware of their unexpected guests.
“Let’s wake them up, I’m sure they will welcome us into their home” Ruby says with her usual grin “aren’t gnomes known for their welcoming nature? In the end, your the boss though, we’ll follow you”
”we could always head back out and go through want seemed to be the entrance?”Donnabella points back outside“looked like there was stairs or a ramp going up on the other side of the river, not like we could do much sneaking about with you glowing like that either, what’s that all about anyways?”
"Some good logic from all of you, thank you." Haughlin nods at the trio, "But I think waking them is our best shot. If we sneak out and get caught, the Gnomed may think we're here for no good, and we need their help. And going back to the river will take time that we dont have."
He looks down at this hands, only just noticing the glow emanating from him, "I...I have no idea what this is. My magic is new to me, and this has never happened to me before." He looks concerned.
He unfurrows his brow and stands tall.
Walking to the small cave directly to the north of him he approaches the sleeping Gnomes, raises his hands to about chest height to show that he's not armed then speaks, loudly enough to be heard over the waterfall, but not to seem threatening, "Excuse me, sorry to bother you whilst you sleep, but we need your help."
You shout loudly at the Gnome trying to rouse them from his sleep but it doesn't seem to make much difference, you shout louder and louder with the Gnome rolling over in their sleep and pulling their blanket up closer to their chin. You give the Gnome a sharp poke to the back with your finger and instantly feel their body tighten as they waken.
You take a step back raising your hands as the Gnome sits up rubbing the sleep from their eyes, they look around the room taking their time looking each one of you over as he yawns and stretches.
"W-what can d'you need that so important you need to wake someone from their sleep? I was having a great dream, almost figured out the issue with the barrel crabs!"

"B-Barrel crabs?" Haughlin replies with a hint of confusion, expecting more anger from waking the gnome.
"I'm sorry, I wouldn't have woken you if I had another choice. We're looking for Gnomengarde and appear to have come in the wrong entrance. Phandalin is in need of your people's help, I need to speak with your leader." He continues, more confidently
(You have a feeling that the glowing lights are not related to your own magic source, but appear to be coming from the surrounding area.)
"Aye the barrel crabs, didn't you see them on your way in? It's how we move our heavy stuff about the place" The gnome has a sudden moment of realisation "The wrong entrance? there only is one entrance ... wait did you come in from there?" He points towards the tunnel where you arrived through. "I've told Jabby who knows how many times we need to stick a door on there! Either way, you'd need to speak with Fibblestib and Dabbledob, follow that path to the next room and you should find them there."
"We did, sorry for the intrusion." Haughlin bows his head slightly as he speaks, "From the outside, this was the closest entrance we could see without having to cross the river."
"Thank you for your help, friend, I'll go find this Fibblestib and Dabbledob. Apologies again for waking you." He bows again, this time more deeply, in thanks.
He turns to his friends, points towards the path to the south, "This way, we should find the leaders through there." He says as he walks towards the next area.
"Yeah yeah, no harm done." he waves you off as he turns with a yawn and strech and returns to his bed.
You leave the dorm room via the South exit climbing the dimmly lit stairs up as the walls begin to close in forcing the party into single file. After a short while the corridor turns to the West and continues to rise, as you reach the top of the stairs you begin to hear a loud argument going on in Gnomish. Looking into the room you spot two Gnomes (one male, one female) shouting at each other surrounded by scraps of paper and what look to be half finished inventions. There are worktables against the walls covered in tinker's tools where the Gnomes appear to have been working.
On the west side of the room is a 10ft high ledge overlooking the room, you can just make out the top of what appears to be a wooden pedestal at one corner of the ledge.
As you enter the room the Gnomes pay no attention to you, seemingly having not noticed you at all.
