You see footprints that go both to the left and to the right. Whoever made the footprints to the left (and it appears to have been multiple people at various times), seemed to have noticed and stepped carefully over the water damaged area. The footprints to the right are lost in the debris that litters the floor after the first door. The footprints do not appear to enter the first door, they seem to continue into and through the debris, but that is all that you can see from where you're currently standing.
Wake steps to the right and lets everyone ascend the stairs apologetically. He shakes his head “No” to Elwyn’s question as he approaches the top of the stairs. He will whisper to the group,
”Footprints travel in both directions but avoid both this door …” he says as he points to the first door, “and to the damaged floor over there.”He points to the water-damaged section of hallway.
”Do we want to split up? I would prefer going right and seeing what that object is on the floor and then confronting or freeing whoever is in that direction.”
Wake will lead to the right with his shield raised but will try to identify what the object on the floor in the middle of the hallway is. He will glance up at the ceiling to see if it looks like it dropped from above or does it look like it was dropped by an earlier passerby?
Wake & All - As you near the object you see that it is a key. It appears to have been dropped or placed there recently as it sits atop the debris. The plaster on the ceiling is moldy and crumbling away, it makes up a good amount of the debris covering the floor. Now that you're further down the hallway you can also see that the foot prints continue down the hall. They go to both the second and third doors, though there seems to have been much more traffic to and from the second door.
Ruby would like to look at the walls for any kind of thieves cant symbols carved into it, if the walls are in better condition than on the floor below. While doing that she will step off to the left hallway checking the damaged floor if it looks passable. "Are we sure it came from the right side?" Ruby asks.
Wake will stoop and retrieve the key. He will transfer it to be held in his shield hand and then step up to the second door and lean in to listen. If he hears nothing, he will attempt to quietly and slowly turn the knob (or lift a latch or open whatever mechanism keeps the door shut).
Wake & All - This room appears to be another dirty, decaying bedroom without furniture. Even viewed from the doorway, it’s evident that the floor in here does not look safe; some of the floorboards are missing, and others are partially dislodged. The foot prints continue along the floor all the way to the window and back, hugging the west wall.
Ruby - There doesn't appear to be any symbols or messages carved into the walls, though there are plenty of patches of mold and thick cobwebs. The patch of floor to the left looks like it would very likely collapse under the weight of a medium or larger size person walking across it. The damaged area is only about 5ft across and the floor looks sturdy enough on either side of it.
Wake will shake his head to the others and proceed to the furthest door and listen. Once again, if he hears nothing he will slowly and quietly attempt to open the door.
Wake & All - You try the door and it is locked, but the key that you found fits and the door unlocks when you turn it. Surprisingly, this doorknob operates smoothly as if it were oiled recently. In the southeast corner of this decayed bedroom lies a man; he is alive, though bound and gagged. He is clad only in undergarments and appears to have no weapons or equipment.

Wake will wave everyone in as he rushes to the man’s side, being careful to avoid the rotted areas of the floor. He will set his shield aside and move first to untie the man’s gag.
”What has happened to you? Are you hurt?”
Wake will move to untie the man’s legs first but in a deceptively slow manner, to give the man time to answer.
Elwyn follows into the room, cautiously going around the rotted parts of the floor. "Yes, tell us, you are safe now my friend." He says to the bound man, trying to comfort him into talking freely. Persuasion if needed: 15 assuming help action from Wake or someone else. Elwyn also scans the room for dangers. Perception: 24

Seeing that the boy isn't there and that Wake and Elwyn are tending to the man, Ariana heads west past Kulogall and Daveth. She lightly hops over the rotted floor area in the hallway as she passes Ruby. She then heads north and listens at the door.

Kulogall steps forward and kneels down, looks the man in the eye, and says “Who are you, how did you arrive in this place? What is going on in this house?”
He waits for a reply and gauges his answer.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Wake & Elwyn - The man coughs and spits when you remove the gag, "Ugh... Thank ye... My head feels like I got whacked by a belaying pin..." He winces and Elwyn sees that his hair on the back of his head is matted with partially dried blood. There is a gash and a large knot beneath the blood. "I was headin' to Saltmarsh lookin' to hire out with a fishin' ship. It was gettin' late and I started lookin' for a place to hunker down 'til mornin' then head on to Saltmarsh. I found this place and figured it was abandoned, but it ain't! I was pokin' 'round and all of a sudden somebody called out, "Welcome to yer death!" or some such. Didn't see nobody but I ran like hell. Last thing I remember was feelin' like my head done split open as I was runnin' outta here."
Wake - The man seems genuine as far as you can tell.
Ariana - You hear no sounds coming from beyond the door.
Kulogall - The man is wincing and shaking his head when you approach. He hears you and looks over then seems to startle a bit when he sees you. He quickly recovers, then looks down and watches as Wake unties his bonds, "N-Ned. Name's Ned." He seems to be genuine as far as you can tell.

"Well it was probably not a ghost that gave you that bump on the head, more likely slavers or smugglers. Anything else you can tell us about this place?" Elwyn asks the man while searching the room more thoroughly. Investigation: 10
