The rip in space is one seems to be one of magic, a sort of portal. It seems to go to a place in another realm, a pocket dimension that most high level sorcerers can create of they have the right materials and power source. If the portal does close while on the other side, the person will be stuck unless there is a way to enter the material realm from the other side.

You appear in a room, a portal on the other end, and in the middle, the dragon that you attacked before.
